• ***Sheaves and ropes have large evidence of rust on the ropes. There is no indication of
recent greasing, with some grease line being broken.
o Highly recommend that the hoisting rope is replaced and that the sheaves and luffing
rope are greased at the earliest opportunity and grease lines repaired.

• Magnetic filters were checked and found to have small metal shavings and composite
material.
o Indication that there is damage to one or more of the motors/pumps.

• ***When crew were hoisting platform crane into cargo hold and the load was suspended, it
was noted that the crane sag speed exceeded the manufactures tolerance (1 x winch revolution
every 35-70 sec for 5T suspended load).
o This is further evidence to either damage (see above note on magnetic filter) or
excessive wear to the hoisting motor. It is Highly Recommend that the hoisting motor is
changed at the earliest opportunity, with the defective motor being returned to Alatas UK
either as a service exchange unit or overhaul.
• Boom sheave pin plate has corrosion.
o Recommend regular inspection and repair at next available opportunity.
• ***Loud noise when luffing-up, found luffing brake to have high vibration due to worn pins,
luffing winch bearings also have indication of wear.
o Recommend that brake bands and pins are replace at the earliest opportunity and that
the luffing winch bearings are greased regularly and monitored.
• ***Oil leakage. There is evidence of several hydraulic oil leaks throughout the crane (main
assemblies, receivers, valves and associated pipe work), as shown in pictures below.
o Recommend replacement of seals/gaskets at the earliest opportunity.

• *There is evidence of internal wear and hydraulic oil leakage from the slewing pump.
o Highly recommend replacement of slewing pump.
• ***Hook block in poor condition, safety catch not returning, rope pulley lack of grease and
excessive play in bearing, hook swivel shank no grease and excessive play in bearing.
o Highly recommend that hook block is overhauled, bearings and rope pulley replaced
(excessive wear) at the earliest opportunity.

• Magnetic filters were checked and found to have small metal shavings.
o Evidence of internal wear to pumps/motors, recommend that the filter are cleaned and
checked regularly.
• ***Sheaves and ropes are dry with evidence of rust on the ropes. There is no indication of
recent greasing.
o Highly recommend that the sheaves are greased at the earliest opportunity and the
hoisting and luffing ropes are replaced with new.

• Limit switches checked and found to be operating correctly.
• ***There is very little evidence of recent greasing and maintenance of mechanical moving
parts (bearings, sheaves, ropes, pinions, hook block etc…), with further evidence of rust and
corrosion throughout the crane.
o Highly recommend that the crane is greased at the earliest opportunity, followed up
with visual inspection at all grease points, bearings, sheave etc… (to ensure that grease
lines are not blocked/broken).
• Magnetic filters were checked and found to have small metal shavings.
o Recommend that the filter are cleaned and checked regularly.
• ***Slewring bearings have no indication of recent greasing.
o Highly recommend that the bearings are greased at the earliest opportunity.
• Small areas of corrosion throughout the crane superstructure.
o Recommend repair at next dry-docking.
• Sheave guides on crane tower damaged.
o Recommend repairing sheave guides at the earliest opportunity.
• ***Sheaves and ropes are dry with evidence of rust on the ropes. No indication of recent
greasing.
o Highly recommend that the hoisting rope and luffing rope is replaced with new and
that the sheaves are greased at the earliest opportunity and grease lines repaired.
• ***Tower top (luffing) sheaves have major wear grooves and Boom/Jib end sheaves also
have wear grooves.
o Recommendation to be replaced at the earliest opportunity, further wear could result in
damage to the rope.

• Oil leakage. There is evidence of hydraulic oil leaks throughout the crane (main assemblies,
receivers, valves and associated pipe work), as shown in pictures below. On inspection remote
control hydraulic oil tank found to be below limits, resulting in low oil warning and unable to
start crane.
o Recommend replacement of defective seals/gaskets at the earliest opportunity.
• ***Hook block in poor condition, safety catch not returning, rope pulley lack of grease and
excessive play in bearing, hook swivel shank no grease and excessive play in bearing.
o Highly recommend that hook block is overhauled, bearings and rope pulley replaced
(due to excessive wear) at the earliest opportunity.

General Comments
General inspection of cranes carried out under no-load conditions, further leaks of the hydraulic
system may become apparent when the cranes are operated during cargo operations, under-load
and prolonged periods. The limit switches were checked and found to be operating correctly.
It was found that there was very little evidence of recent greasing and maintenance of the cranes
(bearings, sheaves, ropes, pinions, hook block etc…), with further evidence of rust and corrosion
throughout the crane. It is highly recommended that the cranes are greased at the earliest
opportunity and a full maintenance regime carried out as per manufactures instructions. Particular
attention needs to taken on the slewrings, ropes, sheaves and various bearings/pinions. It is
further recommended that ¼ yearly inspections of the slewring bearings be carried out. Several
of the crane sheaves and rope show signs of high wear/corrosion and will need to be replaced as
soon as possible.
The magnetic filters were checked and all were found to have small metal shavings, particles and
filings, which is evidence that the motors and pumps have some wear. This could be seen on
crane No1 with high sag speed when under load conditions, further evidence of this is from the
leakage of Slewing Pumps in canes 1 & 3. All of which are recommended to be replaced at the
earliest opportunity.
All of the hook blocks were found to be in very poor condition, with lack of grease and excessive
wear marks, safety catches not returning and bearing play. It is highly recommended that at the
earliest opportunity that the hook blocks be overhauled, with bearings and rope pulleys replaced.
It was evident that the cranes had not been run in twin mode (Gemini) for a considerable period
of time. Attempts were made to setup the cranes; whilst synchronisation could be achieved it was
not possible to obtain hoisting and luffing in twin mode. The correspondent instructions in the
ships twin crane manual were found to have been removed. Further investigation is required via
Manufactures Fukushima and Alatas UK.

The spares parts held onboard (2 x hydraulic pumps (G420B & FG16A), 1 x slewing gearbox),
had evidence of prior usage, therefore their integrity and condition could not be determined. It is
recommended that the pumps and slewing gearbox be sent to Alatas UK for inspection and
overhaul as required. The skyhooks found on board had extreme corrosion, and are not
recommended to be used, it is further recommended that is twin crane operation is to be used then
new hooks should be procured.
The ships instructional manuals were found to be incomplete, and unable to locate the spare parts
manual. Recommend that new sets are obtained.
