From the East
Dear Brother Bobby,

I trust this note finds you well and enjoying the May flowers. April
was a busy month and it was good to again see new and familiar
faces at our Stated Meeting. The Rainbow Girls from Hampton
Assembly #5 did a great job with their presentation explaining
their Officer's stations. Our young people are our future. I look
forward to learning more about the Masonic Youth Organizations.
Thank you to everyone who was in attendance and I look forward
to seeing you again soon.

The Grand Master's official visit to our district was a very May 2nd
enjoyable evening. Most Worshipful Chambliss recognized the Army & Navy Ladies Night
support and appreciation we have for the Grand Lodge of Virginia 6:00pm
and our District Deputy Grand Masters. I enjoyed the opportunity
to see so many of my new "old friends". The room was May 3rd
overflowing with fellowship. The youth organizations did an Monitor #197
outstanding job serving the delicious meal. Stated Meeting

Over the next few Thursday night practices we are going to be Meeting 7:30pm

Thursday evenings at 7pm for practice and fellowship. 6:00pm-7:00pm

Lastly, I have enjoyed connecting with so many brethren over the May 14th

connecting soon.

We will once again host the Red Cross for our Blood Drive on
Tuesday, 24 May. Please help us and the Red Cross provide the May 24th
gift of life by donating or bringing a friend to donate. We need all Blood Drive
blood types but can especially can use "negative types". Army & Navy Lodge
Community events like these blood drives serve two important 2:00pm - 6:00pm
areas. First and foremost, it ensures the hospitals have an ample
supply to serve patients needs. Also, we make ourselves visible May 26th
to the local community to illustrate that we are vital partners C.S. Revel / B. D. Hudson
within the community. Please set aside some time to visit the Ritual School
lodge and donate. Transportation #337

Lodge Breakfast with
Is your Masonic House in Order? Bacon Bob
8:00-10:00am
In 2009, when I was Master, a Masonic widow stopped at my
lodge and asked a lady who was there at the time if she could
leave some Masonic belongings of her deceased husband. The
lady told her she could not accept them but gave the widow lady Masonic Birthdays
my phone number. I received a call from the widow later that
morning at which time she said she wanted to donate her late Charles K. Adams
husbands Masonic books, jackets, hats etc. to some Masonic 5/7/79
Lodge. The reason she had picked our lodge was because she
passed it several times a week and had put the stuff in her car
Wes Ashe
trunk in hopes she would see someone there. I asked if she knew
5/21/68
what lodge her husband belonged to. She replied she did not but
thought it was local. I had planned to go to the lodge that Mark L. Faron
afternoon in preparation for our stated meeting the next night so I 5/13/87
said I would stop by her house and pick up her donation. When I
arrived at her residence, she met me in her driveway with one of William O. Godwin
her friends. I opened my trunk and they anxiously started putting 5/12/65
the belongings from her trunk to mine. One of the items was a
Masonic Bible, so I took the liberty of examining it in hopes of
David F. Hall
seeing the deceased's Masonic Record. It was blank. She then
5/28/69
handed me a Shrine pendant and pin which I put in one of the hat
boxes. That box contained the deceased's Fez which had the
name of his temple on it. I explained to her that some of this was Charles E. Jenkins, Jr.
quite valuable and she could sell it. The widow said she would not 5/23/79
feel right selling it and wanted it donated. I told her that I would
see that it got to the appropriate place. I contacted the Shrine Wayne E. Markel
Temple and delivered the deceased's belongings to them. 5/1/96

This got me thinking about all of the widows who have faced this Charles W. Owens, jr.
dilemma. I also wondered how many of our brethren have failed to 5/17/63
have a Masonic Burial Service because their wife or the person
responsible for Funeral arrangements did not know of the brother's Lee D. Parker
desire. One brother told me his father did not want a masonic 5/28/45
service because he did not want the brethren to take time from
work to attend. I am sure he did not know about the night
Benjamin R. Partin
time memorial service.
5/26/61
Many of us have obtained Personal Planning Guide books from
a funeral home which are very good, and I suggest you go to the Michael S. Payne
Funeral Home of choice and get one. The "Personal Planning 5/17/08
Guide" I have includes:

Worshipful Master
The two items above which I have highlighted are of much Bobby Whitehouse
importance as it pertains to your Masonic Service wishes. Your 757-218-9376
instructions should include that you request Masonic Rights, if bwhitehousejr@cox.net
you so desire. If you do request such then you should so specify
weather it should be a grave side or night time service (this could Senior Warden
be decided by your representative due to weather etc.). Wayne Markel, PM
757-850-4810
Who is your Masonic contact? wmarkel@cox.net
If you are local, your lodge Secretary and /or Master should be
contacted immediately (Their phone numbers appear in your Junior Warden
news bulletin). They will make the arrangements, If you are out of Jesse Perez
the local area or State you may still have Masonic Rites. By 757-224-7697
contacting your local Secretary/Master, they can make the jperez83@aol.com
necessary contacts with the Grand Lodge where you reside or are
to be interred and they will assign a local lodge to perform the Chaplain
service. Bob Gadoury, PM
757-722-3737
What should be done with my Masonic belongings?
These items are yours to dispose of as you see fit. However, by Treasurer
designating the items and their recipients it will be easier for your Bob Jones, PM
estate manager (don't forget your apron) 757-595-9801
bobjones@cavtel.net
Do I belong to a Widows Fund?
Many Lodges have a Widow's Fund of which you have joined Secretary
and contributed to. If you belong to such an organization, make Ken Kaplan, PDDGM
sure your beneficiary is up to date. (The Fund that Army & Navy 757-365-0702
Lodge members belong to can designate the recipient even if you ccny59@charter.net
do not leave a widow).
Senior Deacon
What Happens when I can not handle my affairs? Mike Bayer
Many of our brethren have passed on without notification to their 757- 265-7277
lodge. Some have lost the mental capacity to keep up with their vincentbayer@yahoo.com
dues and have been dropped from the roles. Don't let this happen
to you. Designate someone now to notify your lodge and other Junior Deacon
organizations of your condition. In some instances pre-written Chris Ablonsky
demits may be in order. 757-581-8353
seabee1975@yahoo.com
Brethren, this list could go on and on; and I hope it helps you get
things in order. If you have any questions on the above or Senior Steward
anything else you would like information on, I will do my best to Raleigh Pacheco
get the answer for you. Your "Masonic Herald" has much 757-508-2459
information and a column, "Ask Hiram" that explains many things. hdroadking@cox.net
