INTRODUCTION
University of Karachi, founded in 1951, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in
Pakistan. University of Karachi, offers rigorous and vibrant Graduate and Post-graduate degree
programs in the fields of Arts, Business Management, Islamic Studies, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy
and Science. These postgraduate programs are being offered in 54 teaching Departments and 17
Research Institutes/Centres, under nine Faculties. The programs have been developed in view of
the emerging needs of industries and R&D organizations both in public and private sectors. The
research and teaching programs are supervised by more than 800 highly qualified and
internationally recognized eminent faculty members.
To date, University of Karachi has produced more than 1300 PhDs and more than 1500 M.Phils.
Presently, more than 2600 students are enrolled in M.S./Ph.D and other research programs. The
excellence in academics, research and development has placed University of Karachi among the
World Top 600 Universities as ranked by QS World University Ranking out of 17000
Universities around the world. Whereas its rank in Natural Sciences is 223rd which is the highest
ranking for any Pakistani University.
In pursuance of acquiring excellence in research, faculty of the University has been actively
involved in supervising research projects, results of which are being accepted and published in
top quality journals of international repute. In 2007-08 alone, the faculty of the University of
Karachi has published more than 700 research papers in peer-reviewed journals indexed by
Thomson-Reuter (ISI Web of knowledge) and ranked at number two among 60 Universities/
Institutions (public and private sectors) of Pakistan. The alumni of the University are holding key
positions in various prestigious national and international organizations.
The University of Karachi provides excellent opportunities to its Postgraduate students to hook-
up with the World top Universities under collaborative research and Sandwich/split programs. In
this context, various Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) were signed between University of
Karachi and the counterpart foreign Universities. For instance, in the year 2008-09, interactions
started with the University of Isfahan and University of Hormozgan, Iran; University of Peace,
Costa Rica; University of Apartado, Mexico; University of Bedfordshire and University of
Stafford Shire, UK, University for Foreigners of Perugia and University of Sassari, Italy.
Likewise, University of Karachi is also smoothly running various collaborative research projects
under the supervision of its faculty members with the University of Hamburg, Germany, at UAE
University, at Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, Beijing, China, University of New South
Wales, Sydney, Australia, Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Munich, Germany, New York
Blood Center, USA and University of Salzburg, Austria, Department of Molecular Microbiology
and Immunology, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University and New Jersey
Medical School, Public Health Research Institute, USA.
University of Karachi offers the upcoming graduate and post-graduate students a multi-

areas of Social and Natural Sciences and Technology.

REQUIREMENTS/PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION
TO M.S./Ph.D.
Eligibility:
For M.S. only& M.S./Ph.D. At least sixteen years of studies (Master’s degree MA, MSc,
MBA, MPA, MAS, MIS, M.Com., 4 years’ BS, B.Pharm,
Pharm-D, MBBS, BDS, DVM) or equivalent qualification
with at least second division in the relevant field from a
recognized University. However, holders of MBBS, BDS
DVM or equivalent qualifications will be required to
undertake 15 credit hour courses (300-600 level) in addition
to 24 credit hour courses (700 level.)
(Students awaiting results are also eligible to appear in the entrance test. However, they
will be required to submit their final result (transcript/proforma) latest by February 13,
2010.

d) Merit for admission will be determined on the basis of marks obtained in the
last basic degree. (Master’s degree MA, MSc, MBA, MPA, MAS, MIS, four
years’ BS, B.Pharm, Pharm-D, MBBS, BDS, DVM or equivalent.)
5. After qualifying the entrance test, the candidate is required to submit the following
along with duly filled admission form signed by the Chairman/Director of the
department/institute/centre and the concerned Dean:
i. Two recent passport size photographs duly attested by the
Chairperson/Director of the Department/Centre/Institute concerned.
ii. Attested photocopies of certificates/degrees from S.S.C. to Masters or
the last pre-requisite exam.
iii. Degree holders of other Universities are required to submit Migration
Certificate.
iv. An attested photocopy of Computerized National Identity Card.
v. N.O.C. and two year’s leave letter from the employer, if the candidate
is in service or a certificate of non employment stating that during
research no employment shall be undertaken, executed on a stamp
paper worth Rs. 20/- (attested by Notary Public/Oath Commissioner).
However, teachers and employees of organization where research work
is done are exempted from leave.
vi. In case of foreign students, N.O.C. from the Ministry of Education,
Government of Pakistan, Islamabad and an attested copy of valid visa
& passport.
vii. Certificate from the Equivalence Committee, University of Karachi, in
case, the accreditation status of the degrees is not clear.
viii. The Admission & Tuition fee required: please see fee structure (page
17).
Provisional Admission:
Final list of the qualified candidates will be made the basis of merit of the candidate and
availability of seats by the departmental research committee (DRC) which will be
submitted to the BASR for the consideration of provisional admission.
Course Work:
i. All selected candidates will be required to complete eight courses (3+0 or 2+1)
of 24 credit hours in two semesters.
ii. Candidates are required to attend 75% classes of each course.
iii. The student has to pass the course work with CGPA 3.00 or more. In case the
student fails to get the desired CGPA, he/she will be allowed to improve the
grade. Only one chance for improvement will be given.
iv. If the student fails to improve his/her grade even after the improvement chance
he/she will be given a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD).

Confirmation of Admission:
i. After passing the course work with CGPA 3.0 or more the student will apply
through proper channel for confirmation of admission and approval of research
title.
ii. The student will submit a synopsis along with research topic, bibliography, name
of the Research Supervisor and a copy of the marks certificate issued by the
Semester Examination Cell.
Duration of Study:
b) Ph.D. (i) Minimum one and maximum five years from the date of
conversion to Ph.D.
(ii) Minimum two years and maximum five years for those
admitted directly to Ph.D.
Note:
i. The student may request for Re-admission before expiry of the maximum period.
ii. In case the maximum period has expired, the student will be required to apply for
Fresh-admission within six months from the date of expiry of admission.
The thesis will be evaluated by two examiners and the supervisor. The viva voce
examination will be conducted after receipt of positive reports from the examiners and
approval by the BASR. On successful defence of the thesis, M.S. degree will be awarded.
Conversion to Ph.D.:
If the student passes the course work in CGPA 3.0 or more, he/she will be given a
research project by the supervisor which will be processed through BASR. After one year
of research, a student may apply for conversion from M.S./Ph.D. to Ph.D.
i. During the research, the student has to publish at least one paper in one of the
reputed journals and submit a copy of the paper or a letter of acceptance along
with the thesis to BASR. However, he/she will be required to submit a copy of the
published paper before the award of Ph.D. degree.

ii. Evaluation report of two foreign examiners of developed countries (subject to
availability) and the report of supervisor will be required on thesis.
iii. The viva-voce examination will be conducted and the student will have to defend
the thesis.
iv. On successful defence of the thesis and positive reports from the examiners, Ph.D.
degree will be awarded.

REQUIREMENTS/PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO
M.S. (Surgery)/ M.D.(Medicine)
Eligibility:
i. Bachelor of medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) and BDS or
equivalent qualification from a recognized University plus one year house job.
ii. Copy of the valid registration certificate from Pakistan Medical and Dental
Council (P.M. &D.C.).
Admission Procedure:
2. The candidate shall submit the following documents along with the Entrance test
application Form:
i. Photocopy of the last degree.
ii. Copy of the valid registration certificate from Pakistan Medical and
Dental Council (P.M. & D.C.)
iii. Photocopy of Computerized National Identity Card.
iv. Two passport size photographs.
v. Copy of NTS/University of Karachi Entrance Test (19-10-2008) result
(if available).
3. i. Candidates will be given 20 percent weightage for NTS score, if valid, and
they will be exempted from appearing in section I (English + Communication
Skills) of the University of Karachi Entrance Test. However, they will have to
clear section II (Subject knowledge and application of 80% marks.)
ii. Students who have passed University of Karachi NTS Test held on 19-10-
2008 will be exempted from appearing in test for this intake. However, they will
have to apply on the prescribed form.

5. After qualifying the test the candidate is required to submit the following along
with the admission form.
BASR shall approve the detailed plan of work on the subject or any of its branches and
the supervisor on the recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine.

Other details of the Program:
i. Duration of the program will be four years. During the first year the student
will be required to complete 24 credit hours (3+0 and/or 2+1) courses of basic
sciences at University of Karachi. Courses will be selected by supervisor. The
next 3 years will be structured clinical training program under the supervisor.
Examination:
Part B-Thesis:
a. Each candidate shall submit a thesis dealing with the subject or any of its
branches.
b.The candidate shall submit a declaration to the effect that thesis embodies the
work conducted by the candidate.
c. The supervisor shall also submit a certificate to the effect that the facilities did
exist at the institute for the work embodied in the thesis and that the work has
not already been submitted as a thesis to any other university.
d.The thesis shall be examined by two examiners appointed by BASR on the
recommendation of the Board of Faculty of Medicine.
e. The examiners shall report as to whether the thesis be accepted or rejected. In
the event of a disagreement between the examiners, BASR shall appoint a third
examiner and the opinion of two of the three examiners shall be carried.

f. Inadequacy of the thesis will be graded as
g. After approval of the thesis, the candidate shall be permitted to appear in Part-
C of the examination.
