Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

Uses, Applications and Markets

EMC : Electromagnetic Compatibility
EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility):
The ability of equipment or a system to function satisfactorily
in its electromagnetic environment.

EMI (Electromagnetic Interference):

Disturbance or malfunction due to electromagnetic energy.

Any electromagnetic disturbance, phenomenon, signal, or emission that

causes, or is capable of causing, undesired responses or degradation of
performance in electrical or electronic equipment (Emission).

Electromagnetic Disturbance:
Unwanted Electromagnetic noise that degrades the Performance of
Electrical or electronic equipment.
Example:
Computer screen distortion caused by your cellular phone, cross-talk
between phone lines, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) are some examples of EMI
Problems.

 Importance of EMC

 DIRECTIVA 2004/108/CE
EMC has become increasingly important recently because of its wide
ranging industrial and more general societal (for instance medical)
implications.
Meeting EMC standards is a basic requirement for any electrical and
electronically device before placement on the market. EMC problems
are thus main concerns of the telecommunication, electronics,
automobile industry, etc.,

 EMC Testing
There are four types of EMC test:
1.Radiated Emission,
2.Radiated Immunity,
3.Conducted Emission and
4.Conducted Immunity.

 Why is EMI/EMC testing required for commercial and military equipment?
EMI/EMC testing is designed to ensure that electrical/electronic equipment will
perform properly in its expected electromagnetic environment, thus maintaining
an acceptable degree of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).

 EMC is a twofold occurrence and consists of emissions and immunity

 First, EMC implies that the equipment will not generate unacceptable
interference emission levels which could cause interference (the emissions
portion);
 second, EMC implies that the equipment's intrinsic immunity levels are such that
it can tolerate ambient levels of interference without degradation of performance
(the Immunity portion). Therefore, EMC means that a device must be capable of
operating in all modes in the environment for which it was designed without
degrading its own performance or that of any nearby equipment.

 EMI Filter
A circuit or a device that provides electromagnetic noise suppression for an
electronic device .

Emission and Immunity Basic principles

1. To eliminate or minimize the EMI source: At design stage can be easier

than when product is already finished.

2. To increase receiver immunity. It can be complicated in function of the

topology and the receiver sensibility

Reproduction forbidden without written permission from Premo Group 5 November, 2010 8
How products are classified in the norms?

Normally, in function of the application environment:

DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT:
Equipment foreseen to be used in domestic environment and in places directly connected to
low voltage distribution network supplying electric energy to domestic users.
- Restrictive Emission Limits
- Susceptibility Limits more relaxed.

INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONTMENT:
Equipment foreseen to be used in other environments than the ones defined as domestic
before.
- Emission Limits more permissive (liberal)
- Susceptibility limits more restrictive.

Different classifications exist in function of the norm applicable (ex.: by current).

dV/dT
 dV/dT Defined
 Stands for “Change in Voltage over Change in Time”
Change (d) in Voltage (V)
--------------------------------
Change (d) in Time (T)
Example: 1000 Volts / micro second

 Drives Produce High dV/dT

 Inverters are powerful semiconductor devices working in Pulse Width
Modulation (PWM), generating very high edge steepness of its output
voltage ( Eg. 2000V/µs)
 This brings to several problems;
-Over heating and damaging Motor windings or bearings
- high electromagnetic radiated disturbances and also acoustic noise. This
 These problems bring to over sizing the motor and over cost due to the
screened cables.

 Key features of dV/dT output filter

 Motors can be fed through long cables above 1000 feet.
 Enhancement of the system efficiency
 Increase the system reliability
 Reduce Motor heat & Increase motor life
 They remove the steep edge of the PWM wave form
 A balance of impedance and capacitance.

EMC FILTERS FOR EV
PREMO is developing new solutions of EMC filters for Battery Chargers in Plug-in
Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in order to fulfill the standard EN61851-21 or similar
standard, and to assure the vehicle is free of interference problems.

These filters are qualified according to the standard AECQ200C and manufactured in
dedicated production lines audit by some of the main car manufacturers.

Premo can give a global solution from 3.3 kW to 43 kW battery chargers EMC filters
are in single phase, three phase or dc mode, with low, fast or ultra fast charge.

Current transducers for ac or dc mode with high accuracy are integrated in some of the
filters, in order to measure the main and the possible leakage current.

Premo is working with some of the mains car manufacturers that are developing
electrical vehicles with battery charger on board in order to optimize the connection
between vehicle and grid.

FEED THROUGH FILTERS
Feedthrough Filters offer a high insertion loss across a broad band of
frequencies – from a few tens of KHz right through to the GHz region.

Feedthrough Filters can be used in telecom, Industrial, military and

aerospace applications

Insertion Loss:

At a given frequency, the insertion loss of a Feedthrough filter connected

to a given transmission system is defined as the ratio of the output
voltages appearing across the line immediately beyond the point of
filtering before and after the insertion loss of filter.

C Filter:
FEED THROUGH FILTERS
This is a Feedthrough capacitor with low self
inductance.

It shunts high frequency noise to ground and is

suitable for use with high impedance source and load.

Pi Filter:

This is a Feedthrough filter with two capacitors and

an inductive element between them. It should be

used where both source and load impedances are

high.
