“SCOPE OF AYURVEDA IN MEDICAL TREATMENT”

ABSTRACT
India has a glorious history on Ayurveda. The process, theories and philosophies that were
described on Ayurveda text are the basis of all the activities that are used to prevent the diseases
by Indian and neighboring counties people.

Nowadays, people are fed up with this congested, synthesized, unnatural and suffocating
environment. They want to return back to nature. This reversed path has also affected the
treatment system. People have started to be conscious about their health. They have started to
think about the food they eat, the place they visit and the medicine they use. Obviously, they
prefer natural things for their proposes to synthesized and unnatural things. Ayurveda is also a
natural therapy since it interrelates the living body to biological, mental and spiritual activities
and prescribes the natural herbal and metallic medicine taken from our surrounding. So people
prefer Ayurveda and its products. In this context, numbers of visitors to the Ayurveda Health
Services have dramatically increased during these years.

According to National Ayurveda Health Policy, Government has planned to establish new
Ayurveda health services and make all the services well-equipped in proportion to the population
density, public demand and participation. So the new Ayurveda Health services are being
established in different parts of country not only in government sector but also in private sectors
RSM's Research Institute of Health Sciences & Management (R I H S M) was established.
Dhanwantari Ayurveda hospital and Research Center is one of the examples of private Ayurveda
hospital.

Similarly for the research, modernization and development of Ayurveda, recently between the
government of China and Nepal had an agreement to establish National Ayurveda research and
training center in Kathmandu and Nepal side is doing homework to establish Herbal garden,
hospital and research center in Terai region may be by the government of India.
In this research the primary data collected through questionnaire helps to analyze the scope of
ayurveda in the medical treatment that guides to conclude which factors is responsible for the
increasing demand of ayurveda.

Introduction:
Ayurveda is the ancient Indian system of medicine that has a known and traceable history of
prevalence in India at the least for the past 5000 years. It is one of the oldest systems of medicine
in the World and yet the fact that as much as 80 % of the population in India and a lesser
proportion around the globe utilize this form of medicine at some point of time is a testimony to
its contemporary relevance. The term Ayurveda combines two Sanskrit words AYUS which
means life and Veda which means knowledge or science.

WHO has defined the traditional medicine as” It is the sum total of the knowledge, skills and
practices based on the theories, beliefs and experiences indigenous to different cultures, whether
explicable or not, used in the maintenance of health, as well as in the prevention, diagnosis,
improvement or treatment of physical and mental illnesses”.

The WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy paper 2002-2005 explains that traditional,
complementary and alternative medicine attracts the full spectrum of reactions, ranging from
uncritical enthusiasm to uninformed skepticism. Yet the use of traditional medicine remains
widespread in developing countries. In many parts of the world, policy-makers, health
professionals and the public are wrestling with the question about the safety, effectiveness,
quality, availability, preservation and further development of this type of health care. Meanwhile,
in many developed countries, complementary and traditional medicine is becoming more and
more popular. The percentage of the population, which has used complementary and traditional
medicine at least once, is 48% in Australia, 50% in Canada, 42% in USA, 38% in Belgium and
75% in France.

In many parts of the world expenditure on TM/CAM is not only significant, but growing rapidly.
In Malaysia, an estimated US$ 500 million is spent annually on this type of health care,
compared to about US$ 300 million on allopathic medicine. In the USA, total 1997 out-of-pocket
CAM expenditure was estimated at US$ 2700 million. In Australia, Canada and the United
Kingdom, annual CAM expenditure is estimated at US$ 80 million, US$ 2400 million and US$
2300 million respectively.

The scope of Ayurveda in government sector is also increasing. In 75 districts BAMS doctors are
servicing. Ayurveda Hospitals are being equipped with all the facilities. There is not any
discrimination on Ayurveda Manpower in regard to all facilities and grade than the manpower of
other therapies.

Literature Review:
Earlier Research has been done on Scope of Ayurveda in sport medicine by Dr.C. Suresh Kumar
M.D, PhD.. Triveni Nursing Home, Vanchiyoor, Trivandrum, Kerala State- 695035, and India.
That was based on overall care of an athlete at all levels, both amateur and professional.

I am doing research on scope of Ayurveda in medical treatment. Where I am getting individual

thought of some people in this field on the basis of questionnaire provided them and analysing it.

Rationale:
Ayurveda is a national method of therapy/treatment in India and Nepal. Like the Heritage of
Himalayas and water resources, the original practices, manuscripts, records of Ayurvedic
treatment and medicinal use of abundant herbs has taken an important role in both countries
With a view to effectively towards Ayurvedic treatment, for this Ayurveda Health Policy has
been made.

So I want to provide some observation of the people about this traditional treatment and to
promote such a great practices in India again because we are rich in natural things since ancient
time.

Objective:
Principal objectives is to improve health condition of mass people and make them self-reliant on
health service by officially and utmost utilizing local medicinal herbs and medical entities which
are easily available and can be used. For the accomplishment of the objectives identified by the
National Health Policy, 2048 (1992), the specialty of Ayurvedic treatment which has been
preserving health and curing diseases from ancient times is timely.

Research Methodology:
This research involves following methodology—

1. Research Type: It is descriptive in nature where real facts and figure used.

2. Sample Size: It is of 75-people Data.

3. Method of Data Collection: Primary data is collected for research.

4. Sample Technique: Simple random sample technique is used.

5. Statistical Tools: For analysis Table and graphs is used with the help of SPSS statistical
software.

6. Data Collection: Raw data is collected through questionnaire and General information is
collected through internet.

Factor Analysis
Almost each and every Factor mentioned above in graph shows positive response from the
people involved in data collection through questionnaire, which is very healthy results for this
research. So in future these factors help to choose ayurveda in the treatment and scope of this
treatment is very high, as per current collection of data.

Conclusion of Project

As per above study of tables and graph that came after analysis of data, is very positive response
from the people related to the scope of ayurveda in medical treatment. For this proper awareness
and availability of centre’s is required to attract the people because of lack of such type of
facilities in the near location of people most people diverted to rest of treatment facility available
in the nearby location, Or they move only if they not get positive effective in their other
treatment. So for the encouragement of such type of people need to take necessary steps like
health centre in near location. Because to become again rich in traditional treatment need to
focus on this.
