Protect the Windows Host using DiskSafe
Introduction

DiskSafe provides reliable data

protection and rapid data recovery
in the event of a system crash or
disk failure.
DiskSafe protects Windows
application servers, desktops and
laptops by copying their local disks
or partitions to a mirror – another
local disk or a remote virtual disk
managed by a storage server
application such as IPStor, iSCSI
Storage Server.

Protect the Windows Host using DiskSafe
Main New Features and Updates in v3.6X

Support the Disk Encryption in the DiskSafe protection

Enhance the Restoration Wizard, support restore the disk or file/folder. In

the restoration, DiskSafe will scan the U-map and delta data between the
mirror disk with source disk.
Support new WinPE based Recovery CD.

New DiskSafe Clustering feature support N-nodes Cluster environment. It

is much easier to configure the protection policy.
Added support for Thin Provisioning to be used with IPStor 6.X

 LUN Group Management is simplified

Synchronization in Details - Continuous mode

Continuous Mode Characteristics:

Ensures that the mirror always have
the most up-to-date information.
DiskSafe
Syncs up primary disk to remote disk
each time there is a block updated.
If the mirror disk write speed is much
slower than protected disk, DiskSafe
won’t wait for mirror disk response,
and instead will continue writing data
to primary disk. At that time, the
continuous synchronization will be
temporarily interrupted.

SYNC!

Creating consistency group in DiskSafe allows you to link individual disks

or partitions together for synchronization and snapshot, whose action
will be executed at the same time.
All configuration settings that you specify for the group override the
settings previously specified for the individual members of that group.
However, each individual member retains its own synchronization
optimization settings.

The Art of Disaster Recovery
There are two types of DR Exercises

DR Drills
• Pure Simulated Disaster Recovery
• Bring up Servers at DR without Impact to Production
• Replication from Production to DR is ongoing

DR Exercise
• Simulated Disaster Recovery
• Similar to actions taken in Real Disaster
• DR Servers become Production Servers
• Production & DR CDP Servers switch roles

The Art of Disaster Recovery
Recap – DR Drill is not DR Exercise

DR Drills
• Pure Simulated Disaster Recovery
• Bring up Servers at DR without Impact to Production
• Replication from Production to DR is ongoing

The Technology
• Uses Snapshot Copy (TimeView)
• Test, Verify, Go Home

Bandwidth Calc
(Save money for Customer,
more money for YOU!)

© FalconStor Software 2007 · All Rights Reserved

Bandwidth Calculations

• There is no minimal bandwidth required to start

replication
• However, in low bandwidth conditions, meeting
defined RPO might be difficult
• To determine suitable bandwidth:
– Determine RPO requirements
– Determine delta to be replicated across per day
– Obtain approximate daily changes
• Factor in line efficiency

PAGE 48
Name of Presentation
Usage Rights
US only © FalconStor Software 2007 · All Rights Reserved
Example for Bandwidth Estimation

• RPO: 24 hours
• Delta per day: 20 GB (~160000 Mb)
• Estimated Microscan savings: 50% (~80000 Mb)
• Total after Microscan: ~80000 Mb
• Bandwidth required:
80000 Mb / 86400 seconds = ~ 1 Mbps
Note the differences between Megabyte and Megabit
• Actual available bandwidth / line efficiency:
70% (~0.7 Mbps) = Up to 60480 Mb per day
• Best line:
~1.5 Mbps and above
