Radiological Sciences
Title
Purpose:
To provide guidelines of dress for UCLA Radiology employees at all levels in the
Department.
Presentation of a professional image can help to gain customer confidence, trust, co-
operation and diffuse anxiety levels.
Customers equate a professional image with competence. Such an image includes personal
appearance, and the tonal quality and manner with which an employee interacts with them.
Policy:
I. General Hygiene
• Daily cleanliness and well groomed
o free from body odors
• Hair clean and well groomed
o Moustaches and Beards neat and trim
o Hair longer than shoulder length should be worn away from the face
and controlled from falling into a patient care field.
• Avoid strong perfume, cologne or aftershave scents
• Make-Up should be understated [i.e. do not wear bright red lipstick, bright
blue or metallic eye shadow, heavy eyeliners, etc.]
• Nails (Must be non-distracting, non-disruptive to patients and colleagues)

o Clothes must not allow for bare midriff or back when bending,
stooping or reaching.
• Surgical Scrubs may be worn. They must be clean and free from stains.
o Scrubs are allowable in patient care areas that are interventional or
procedural in nature where soiling of clothing is likely (Fluoro, IR,
CSIR, etc.)
• Cotton T-Shirts are allowed, but must be free from logos other than UCLA
Medical Center.
o Cotton T-Shirts must be of a solid, coordinating color with the rest
of the attire.
• Shoes with an enclosed toe and heel [Clogs are acceptable] will be worn.
o White tennis/sport shoes that are clean and in good condition are
acceptable.
o In direct clinical care areas, shoes worn with street clothes are styled
appropriately for safety purposes; avoid high heels (higher than 1.5 inches)
or high platform shoes.
• Lab Coats that are clean and in good repair are allowed for direct clinical patients
such as Faculty, Fellows, Residents, Technologists and Nurses.
o The Department will supply one full or three-quarter length lab coat at the
time of hire, embroidered with the Department name on the left chest area
of the coat.
o Each employee will be responsible for maintaining a clean, presentable lab
coat.
o Hospital Assistants will be provided with the Department standard smock
specific to their classification.

Ties are an approved option
o Females
Opaque undergarments are to be worn at all times and will not be
visible through uniform tops
Beige or white hose will be worn with skirts and dresses if desired.
Colored or patterned tops are acceptable.
Colored socks coordinated with tops may be worn.
o Radiation film badge must be worn if your position and job duties require such
safety monitoring.
o Both badges will be renewed prior to expiration and are the responsibility of the
employee to maintain.
o Both badges must be surrendered by the employee on resignation or termination
