Blogs on improving Iub Efficeincy:

-------------------------------------------------------
* It has been found out in simulations that for example PS services require much
less transport capacity than is actually reserved by CAC

*By tuning activity factors (AF) operator can increase Iub efficiency by allocat
ing more calls on transport media.
This results in decreased transport costs

*With Transport Bearer Tuning it is possible to increase the number of NRT 384 c
onnections admitted to a user plane VCC by adjusting the NRT activity factor

*Transport Bearer Tuning is meant to improve Iub transport efficiency

INTRODUCTION

*Transport Bearer Tuning feature enables free setting of DL and UL Activity fact
or for AAL2 Link Characteristics (ALC)
ALC parameters are used by AAL2 Connection Admission Control (CAC) to ma
ke transport capacity reservation for Transport Bearers

ALC parameters are specified in ITU-T 2630.1 specification.

ALC parameters are defined for every traffic type. For HSPA traffic ALC
parameters are nulls. By using ALC parameters it is possible to guarantee QoS fo
r RABs

Statistically real average transport capacity reservation is smaller than AAL2 C

AC reserves currently in RNC/BTS and AXC.

*ALC parameters includes:

MAX CPS SDU Rate

MAX CPS SDU Size

Average CPS SDU Rate

Average CPS SDU Size

Activity Factor parameter is used to affect Average CPS SDU Rate (normal
ly AF is 1 for all traffic types but AMR, CCH and SRBs).
Average CPS SDU Rate = AF x MAX CPS SDU Rate

*PARAMETERS

Activity factor parameters are RNC specific. There are dedicated activity factors
for all bearers
-Recommendation for AMR is 0.6 after testing with lower activity factors
-NRT bearer (TTI 10 ms) cannot have activity lower than 0.1 in DL if dynamic sch
eduling for NRT is used if defined lower then 0.1 is used
All bearers are not listed here, only the different types of bearers
-Activity factors for NRT DCH traffic bearers
-Activity factors for CS DCH traffic bearers
-Activity factors for AMR DCH traffic bearers
-Activity factors for RT PS traffic bearers
-Activity factors for DCCH traffic bearers
-Activity factors for FACH and RACH traffic bearers
-Activity factors for PCH traffic bearers

SUMMARY

Transport bearer tuning increases the Iub efficiency

CAC reservation can be adjusted to be close to real activity

- Uplink and downlink can be adjusted separately
- Uplink activity normally lower than uplink
Activity factors can be estimated by checking the different NRT bearers active a
t certain measurement period and comparing the actual traffic (from SGSN or VCC
counters) to the nominal traffic When traffic is overbooked the AAL2 delay incre
ases if the traffic amount is bigger than the VCC bandwidth and eventually traff
ic can

Experiences from the field

- A customer in Japan has set NRT activity to 17% (measured activity was about 1
0%)
- This has improved AMR success rate

Note that features Throughput-based Optimization (available from RAS05.1 onwards

) and Transport Bearer Tuning try to optimize the resource usage a bit different
ly.

The throughput-based optimization algorithm

- Adapts the DCH resource reservation (both in air and AAL2 connections) to meet
the actual utilization of the DCH.
- The bit rate allocated for the DCH is downgraded when the utilization of the c
hannel is low.
- The DCH may even be released if the utilization is low enough.
- The UL and DL DCH resource reservations are adapted independently but the DCHs
can be released only if the utilization of the channels in both directions is l
ow enough at the same time

Transport Bearer Tuning (TBT) feature allows the operator to configure the activ
ity factors (ON-OFF ratio) of Iub transport bearers.
- By optimizing the activity factor of different transport bearers it is possibl
e to have higher number of simultaneous users in the system.
