For example, let Vin = 5 sin( ω t ) Volts and silicon diode is used VD = 0.7V ,
then:
When V i > 0 ⇒ VC = 5 − 0 .7 = 4.3V ⇒ Vo = 0.7V
When V i = 0 ⇒ Vo = − VC = − 4.3V
When V i < 0 ⇒ Vo = − Vi − VC =− 5 − 4.3 = − 9.3V
So the output will be as shown in Figure 3-4.

KVL to find the capacitor voltage, and be careful to the polarity of the voltage across
the capacitor. See Figure 3-5. Since the diode is ON, then the output voltage is VD.
