The passive voice 

: how to use it, how to translate it...

1-Read the following sentences and say how the passive voice is formed. Then turn them into active
sentences.

-His civil rights have been violated.

-He was disciplined

-He was given a copy of the disctrict’s policy.

-Each student is required to salute the flag.

-Conscientious objectors will be permitted to opt out.

Sometimes, verbs have 2 complements. Then, both of them can become subjects in the active sentence.

Ex :
The Indians gave the colonists furs and food. The colonists were given furs and food (by the Indians)

Furs and food were given to the colonists (by the Indians)

Sometimes the passive voice is followed by an infinitive with TO

Ex :
Students are required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance (be told /asked/ expected/ forbidden to do sthg)
