Scrap of the Week- Your Ad Here?

From the Yellow Fever forums: Here’s an interesting little tale
about the HB Derby. At the aftermatch function at Maycenvale’s
sponsors pub, City Rovers coach, Grant Hastings [who a few years
ago left Maycenvale under acrimonious circumstances] gave the
usual “football was the winner” speech and wished Maycenvale

Unbeknown to him [and most other people outside of Maycenvale]
their secretary had failed to get their Chatham cup entry in on Ring Smithy to find out how
time and so missed out. Next minute, Maycenvale chairman [can’t
remember his name but a bit of an egg] is in Hastings’ face calling

him all the words under the sun. Reports say that it was very close
to fisticuffs. Ah, the beautiful game…..

Big Cup Round One
It’s Round One of the Chatham Cup proper this weekend. The
Central League teams come into the competition this weekend.

The draw serves up some exciting matches (and some trash). Park
Life has whipped around the office and picked our winners
(in bold):

Wainuiomata vs Wairarapa Utd Prouse 1 (2pm)

Wellington Utd vs Olympic Newtown 1 (2pm)
Tawa vs North Wellington Redwood (2pm)
Upper Hutt vs Waterside Karori Harcourt 1 (2pm)
Waikanae vs Island Bay Jim Cooke (2pm)
Lower Hutt vs Western Suburbs Bell Pk (2pm)
Petone vs KCU Petone 1 (2pm)
Stop Out vs Stokes Valley Hutt Pk 1 (2pm)

Wellington United vs Olympic at Newtown stands out, and so does

Lower Hutt vs Wests at Bell Park (probably Fraser 5!!).

Wellington United bottled their Cap Premier campaign last year

but still fancy themselves Central League material. This will test
their mettle. Olympic meanwhile have had a pretty flat start to
this year’s Central League season.

If you’re going to this one, keep an eye out for Dave Batty pulling
strings in the midfield for Wellington United. Batts is still one of
the most graceful footballs ever to lace up boots in Wellington.
United’s coach G Little might even don the boots (once he’s pulled
all the dollar bills out of them) for a cameo against a club he used
to torment in his time at Miramar. G’s bones might be ageing
but his eye for goal is as sharp as ever. And his ability to wind
up Greeks has done nothing but get better with age. Should be
entertaining!

Parky’s Pick: Wellington United to win on pens.

Lower Hutt vs Wests throws up some interesting elements as

well. Wests have struggled to buy a goal since their Japanese

striker Hiroshi Kamakazi has been injured. Wests’ newly arrived
Englishmen will get their first taste of the Hutt Valley. They’ve
arrived from Surrey (and not Essex) so that might be a bit of a
shock to their system.

Parky’s Pick: Wests’ Kamikaze to score a hat trick. Wests to win

3-2 aet (1-1 full time).

Several possible giant killings loom - KCU could give Petone a

run for their money, especially with Petone’s habit of throwing
away leads. Island Bay could have a tough trip to Waikanae too.
But we reckon Wainuiomata, at home on the rolling meadow that
is Richard Prouse Park, could present plenty of problems for on-
again-off-again Wairarapa United. Rapper’s Waisake Sabutu could
definitely be Goliath. Will Mark Manzone be David? We reckon it
could happen!
