SOLIDARITY with All Long-Term Detainees in CYPRUS Who Are

Victims of a Failed Asylum and Migration Policy &
Victims of Corrupt Detention Practices

JOIN US on TUESDAY 17th of May 2011

14h-17h
In front of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus
Avenue Kortenberg 61 at 1000 Brussels
(Metro Schumann )

DID YOU KNOW that this Mediterranean island and EU member, known for its tourist
attractions and beaches, famous for its rich historical past, where the Greek goddess
Aphrodite arose from the waves …

 Is illegally detaining hundreds of migrants and refugees in different detention centres

and police stations all over the Greek Cypriot territory?
 That there is no legal framework that defines why and for how long one of them is
detained?
 That after a 4year residence in Cyprus, a migrant or a refugee should leave the country
whether s/he has established a life in Cyprus and have work or not whether s/he has
spent that four years in detention because s/he was caught on arrival ?
 That being a candidate asylum seeker, you might be illegally detained while your
procedure is ongoing?
 That your child will be placed with a Cypriot family during your detention?
 That the Aliens and Immigration Department can decide arbitrarily that your file is
closed while you still have a legal status and are an owner of a residence permit?
 That the right to obtain legal help and expertise concerning asylum and refugee law is
almost non-existent?
 That the Cypriot Supreme Court might suspend the order of deportation but seldom
the detention order?
 That the right to medical help is almost non-existent?
On Tuesday the 17th of May 2011 we express our solidarity with:
