Subject : Recommendations of the Committee set up to resolve the issue relating to “continuance
of the limit of twenty X-rays per day per Radiographer” of the Govt. Institutions of West
Bengal.
Memo

At present the average number of regular X-ray exposures per unit (three Medical Technologists
per unit) had been limited to 58(fifty eight) under Administrative Instruction No.4 of 1971 of the Director
of Health Services, Government of West Bengal. The issue was reviewed as more and more modern
technology and equipments in doing X-rays are being used. Consequent upon this, a five-member
Committee was constituted vide order No.HF/IHMC/1M-61-2010/37 dated 09.06.2010 of the Secretary,
IHMC Cell, Department of Health & Family Welfare, to examine the issue relating to “continuance of the
limit of twenty X-rays per day per Radiographer” in the health institutions of this Department. The
Committee had duly examined the issue and has submitted recommendations on 16.07.2010 after
examining guidelines of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, the Competent Authority of Government
of India in this respect.

2. In view of the above, and as per recommendations of the Committee, the Governor has been
pleased to order that
a) The limit of exposures per unit of Medical Technologists (Radio-diagnostics) as given in
Instruction No.4 of 1971 stands dispensed with immediately.
b) Working hours for the Medical Technologists (Radio-diagnostics) may be limited upto 40(forty)
hours per week.
c) Appropriate personnel monitoring devices like TLD badges shall be used by all radiation workers
for evaluation of dose received by them.

3. This order will take immediate effect.

4. All concerned are being informed accordingly.
