Salt Rock earned its name in Shaka’s day – week with their mission to ensure safe

all the sea salt left over from the tide. This great offshore reefs to keep divers’ heads

The cemetery found at the Gingindlovu battle site pays homage to the
soldiers who lost their lives in the hostilities.

oc Gingindlovu Gingindlovu Gingindlovu G

A small little village encircled by vast fields
of sugarcane, Gingindlovu means “swallower
of the elephant” in the Zulu tongue, but for
the colonial settlers it was more like
“swallower of the foreign tongue”. Most of
the colonial ‘visitors’ struggled to make a
reasonable sound out of pronouncing the
name, often light-heartedly referring to it as
“Gin-Gin I Love You”. Gingindlovu was the
site of a military kraal run by Cetshwayo …
the same man who won a famous battle
against his halfbrother Mbulazi and his
warriors at Ndondakusuka. That victory
allowed him to claim control of the Zulu
Kingdom. The famous Battle of Gingindlovu
(2 April, 1879) was the result of one of
Cetshwayo’s regiments of 11,000 impis
attacking 6000 British forces who were
approaching eShowe (the town was then
under siege from Zulu warriors). The British
drove the Zulus away and brought to an
end two months of attrition and isolation. Monument to the famous Battle of Gingindlovu.

eMpangeni, situated in the very beautiful
Mpangeni Valley, is an important town for
the sugarcane plantations and timber growing
industry in the area. It is also a treasure
trove for visitors keen to shop for the
beautiful crafted work produced by the
talented local craftsmen and women. Specially
recommended are the eMpangeni Arts &
Crafts Centre and Jabulani Crafts, the latter
created by a local group of handicapped
people. For a cultural journey visit the
eMpangeni Art & Cultural Museum, which
has fascinating displays, mainly depicting
Zulu culture and history. One of South Africa's
largest sugar mills also worth visiting when
passing through this area – the Felixton Mill
is located only a short way from eMpangeni.

Not the winner of the Most Beautiful or Most Charming town award, Richards
Bay is instead a perfect base for visiting KZN’s top nature reserves.

Richards Bay Richards Bay Richards B u

A major port serving a large industrial area,
Richards Bay offers mining and industrial
tours – play to your strengths, they always
say. The Richards Bay Game Reserve (under
300ha) on the Mhlatuzi Lagoon looks after
the burgeoning birdlife population that draws
twitchers from far and wide. The lagoon is
famous as the spot where the largest croc
in SA history was shot (by John Dunne, 1891),
as well as being the kick-off spot for Huberta
the hippo’s famous east coast trek. The
eNseleni Nature Reserve has two trails, the
iNkonkoni (7km, over a raised platform
walkway across swamp, game and grassland)
and the Mvuba (4km), both of which flirt
with the eNseleni River. Handmade clay pots for sale.

The heart and capital of the Zulu nation,
uLundi is a charming and heart-warming
town which is happy to show-off its heritage:
most of the streets in town are named after
great Zulu leaders, heroes and personalities.
Cetshwayo’s father, King Mpande, lies buried
in a memorial grave off King Zwelithini Street,
while the eMakhosini Valley of the Kings is
the traditional burial ground of most of the
former Zulu kings. A statue of legendary Zulu
leader Shaka stands between the Legislative

king for whom Rider Haggard published his
