The serene and tranquil town of Dullstroom is building a reputation for its
outbreaks of paintball warfare. They say it’s good for team building …
FLY-BY-NIGHT?
Parts of Mpumalanga are best known for
the excellent fly-fishing they offer. The towns
of Belfast, Machadodorp, Dullstroom, Waterval
Boven and Mashishing are referred to as
the Trout Triangle and have dams well stocked
with brown and rainbow trout. See the
comprehensive guide on pages 38–41.

Ready to go over the edge? Skip breakfast and take the big swing over
Graskop Gorge: South Africa’s largest ‘swing’, this is adrenaline overload!
FOUR-LEGGED RIDES
Horse-riding is popular throughout the
province. Many accommodation establish-
ments offer horse-riding as an activity and
there is no shortage of trails in this rider’s
paradise. One of the best horse-riding trails
is a multi-day trail in Kaapsehoop which
includes some time spent tracking the area’s
famous feral horses. The mountainous terrain
makes for exciting riding, and shorter one-
day trails are available.
THE REST OF THE BEST Top: Hot–air balloons are ‘big’ in Mpumalanga.
With a multitude of cliffs and waterfalls in

undoubtedly one of the best sites – so good,

Sabie is the best place for mountain-biking
… pure heaven for casual or competitive
mountain-bikers. You can choose from self-
guided or marked trails covering varying
distances. Many of the province’s rivers are
ideal for rafting. One of the largest rapids
belongs to the Olifants River, combining the
exhilarating sport with equally exhilarating
game-viewing. The best time for rafting is
in the rainy months – November to April.
Hazyview is the capital of hot-air ballooning
and is the destination of international
balloonists. Mpumalanga has a number of
great golf courses and the European PGA
Tour and the South African Sunshine Tour
have been held here. The Gary Player-
designed course at the White River Country
Club is a dream … although, it could be a
nightmare if your drives are attracted to
water! There are many bodies of water on
which to surf or ski and many resorts in
Mpumalanga offer water sports.
11
Always gather as much information about the trail that you will be doing
before you leave so you can be prepared for any eventuality.
12
Take the high road, the low road, the luxury liner or the cheap seats squatting
amongst the chickens: transport options are as flexible as your credit card.

The town began life as a railway station in 1892 on former land of the Nel
family. Its name is derived from ‘Nel’s stream’ (stream is ‘spruit’ in Afrikaans).
