bird-watching are: Lowveld National Botanical
Garden in Nelspruit; Mount Sheba Nature
Reserve near Pilgrim’s Rest; Kaapsehoop
(Blue Swallow Natural Heritage Site has been
established to protect this endangered
species); Blyde River Canyon (viewpoints
are famed for sightings of raptors, sometimes
even the exceptionally rare Taita Falcon) and
the northern, southern and central parts of
the Kruger National Park. The endangered
cranes (wattled, blue and crowned cranes),
that can be seen at the Verloren Vallei Nature
Reserve are also well worth a visit, as is the
Bird of Prey Centre – both are in Dullstroom.
Prior arrangements need to be made before
visiting the Verloren Vallei Nature Reserve
due to the sensitive nature of the cranes.

FLY-BY-NIGHT?
Parts of Mpumalanga are best known for
the excellent fly-fishing they offer. The towns
of Belfast, Machadodorp, Dullstroom, Waterval
Boven and Mashishing are referred to as
the Trout Triangle and have dams well stocked
with brown and rainbow trout. See the

TAKE A GIANT LEAP

There are a number of spectacular gorges
in Mpumalanga and some rather hectic
kloofing sites. A travel magazine recently
rated kloofing in the Blyde River Canyon as
one of the 10 best sites in the country, as
well as Sekorokoro on the Olifants River.
The canyon is not a kloofing site, but there
are places along the way that can be jumped.
Sekorokoro, on the other hand, is incredibly
difficult and for expert kloofers only. Whilst
rock hopping and bum sliding sounds like
fun, this is an activity for the adventurous
and should be led by experienced guides.

FOUR-LEGGED RIDES
Horse-riding is popular throughout the
province. Many accommodation establish-
ments offer horse-riding as an activity and
there is no shortage of trails in this rider’s
paradise. One of the best horse-riding trails
is a multi-day trail in Kaapsehoop which
includes some time spent tracking the area’s
famous feral horses. The mountainous terrain
makes for exciting riding, and shorter one-
day trails are available.

THE REST OF THE BEST
With a multitude of cliffs and waterfalls in
the region, it’s perfect for abseiling. The
waterfalls are out of the ordinary and worth
a try! Mpumalanga is considered a prime
hang-gliding and paragliding destination,
with excellent winter flying conditions.

Mpumalanga hosts the national paragliding
championships, while Barberton is
undoubtedly one of the best sites – so good,
in fact, that the Gauteng Open is held there!
Sabie is the best place for mountain-biking
… pure heaven for casual or competitive
mountain-bikers. You can choose from self-
guided or marked trails covering varying
distances. Many of the province’s rivers are
ideal for rafting. One of the largest rapids
belongs to the Olifants River, combining the
exhilarating sport with equally exhilarating
game-viewing. The best time for rafting is
in the rainy months – November to April.
Hazyview is the capital of hot-air ballooning
and is the destination of international
balloonists. Mpumalanga has a number of
great golf courses and the European PGA
Tour and the South African Sunshine Tour
have been held here. The Gary Player-
designed course at the White River Country
Club is a dream … although, it could be a
nightmare if your drives are attracted to
water! There are many bodies of water on
which to surf or ski and many resorts in
Mpumalanga offer water sports.

 The capital of Mpumalanga (the Lowveld’s industrial centre), Nelspruit lies
in the fertile valley of the Umgwenya River in the hot, humid Lowveld region.

Nelspruit traces its roots back to 1892 when
work began on a station further up the
Umgwenya (Crocodile) River valley. The
agricultural potential of the region (rich soil,
abundant water) attracted both farmers and
traders and, though it began ‘life’ as a railway
station, it only took 13 years for it to blossom
into full town status. This town has a very
important place on the tourist map as it is
a stopover en route to the Kruger National
Park and is a perfect base for travel across
South Africa’s boundaries. Nelspruit acts as
Mpumalanga’s trading centre servicing the
surrounding fruit-growing area, and is a vital
supply centre for Malalane and Komatipoort’s
large sugar mills.
Louis Trichardt’s famous trek (journey) to
Lourenco Marques (Maputo) in 1837 is
honoured in a wagon wheel-shaped sundial
found at the local town hall building.

which include visits to tribal chiefs, sangoma’s
(medicine men) and shebeens (informal pubs
and bars). The town’s streets are generally
well shaded with pretty flowering trees,
making for a pleasant environment for
overnight or slightly longer stays. Seek out
and sample some of the local produce,
especially the delicious ‘home-grown’ fruits.

LOWVELD NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN

Conditions in the area are ideal for growing
citrus and tropical fruits (notably bananas,
oranges, avocado pears, litchis, mangoes,
as well as macadamia and pecan nuts), the
fertile soils and subtropical climate being
great companions for the local farmers (in
addition to the forestry industry). The town
has also built up an impressive array of

Set on the banks of the Umgwenya River,
and covering 159ha (393 acres), the Lowveld
National Botanical Garden near Nelspruit
hosts around 600 plant and 245 bird species.
The Garden claims to house the world’s
largest cycad collection. Visitors can enjoy
a tropical rain forest (the only simulated
rain forest in the world), great bird-watching
spots and a Riverside Trail along the
Umgwenya River. The Croc River Enviro Park
has a good selection of crocs … but also to
be feared are the 88 species of snake in the
park – both indigenous and exotic. Known
as the River of Fear by the local Shangaan,
the Umgwenya River has spawned a second
crocodile park (aka the Crocodile Farm). The
De Brug Ostrich Farm is the only one of its
kind in the province, so saddle up.

The White River Museum pays homage to
vintage cars, while the Barnyard Theatre
offers a welcome diversion from Hollywood
movies by staging local productions. White
River’s trademark is an unusual rock known
as Legogote (‘the rock that leans’). Creative
souls claim that the rock is really in the
shape an antelope or a lion’s head.
HAZYVIEW
Conveniently located close to three of Kruger’s
gates (Paul Kruger Gate, 45km; Phabeni
Gate, 11km; Numbi Gate, 18km), Hazyview
is also a major centre for adventure activities,
including abseiling, quadbiking, river-rafting,
hiking, balloon trips, bass & trout fishing,
4x4 and horse and mountain-bike trails. The
outskirts of town are particularly lush, and
the two big dams are a major lure for bass
fishing enthusiasts. The town began life in
the late 1800s as a trading post to supply
Kruger. The Shangana Cultural Village, a
short distance outside of town, gives visitors
an insider’s look at how the traditional
tocater for souvenir hunters … or absent-
minded gift buyers! The town and environs
offer plenty of accommodation to cater for
all needs and budgets.
BASKET CASE
An unforgettable experience is a hot-air
balloon ride over the Sabie River Valley, just
outside of Hazyview. From high in the sky
you’ll drift over fruit orchards and bushveld,
forests and hills … depending on which way
the wind blows. Flights can end in the neigh-
bouring valley … or even the neighbouring
valley’s neighbouring valley! You won’t want
your money back, as the view from the
basket is spectacular!
