Foreword by Seb Coe On 27 July we will mark two years to go to the
and John Armitt Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic
Games, and on 29 August two years to go to the
Opening Ceremony of the Paralympic Games.
Global attention is focusing on London and the
UK as we prepare to host the greatest sporting
events on Earth.

Now is the time for everyone in the UK to start planning their summer in
2012 and how they will be involved.

In Singapore in 2005, we won the right to stage the Games. There we set
out how London 2012 would be everyone’s Games – reaching young people
all around the world, connecting them with the inspirational power of the
Games and inspiring them to choose sport.

We have made good progress since then. Already, around half of the
London 2012 build programme has been completed on the Olympic Park.
From the outset, the new venues and parkland have been planned with
legacy in mind, using design, innovation and creativity to develop Olympic
and Paralympic venues that work just as well after the Games are over.
Seventy-five pence of every pound spent on the build programme is going

long-term infrastructure improvements, new homes, new jobs, new education,
sports and health facilities. Thousands of companies, small and large, from
across the UK are winning work in this tough economic climate.

All our work is driven by the Olympic Values, excellence, friendship and
respect, and the Paralympic Values, courage, determination, equality
and inspiration. Never have these Values seemed more relevant than in
such changing times, especially for young people’s hopes, ambitions and
challenges – wherever they live and whatever they believe.

Millions of people of all ages from communities across the UK are getting
involved in preparations for the Games. They are gaining employment,
learning about the Games in schools, attending London 2012 Open
Weekend community events and seeing the Games come to life as
the Games mascots are revealed, or in local projects awarded the
London 2012 Inspire mark.

However, we want more. We want every local authority, school, college,

sports club and community group to take part and help build momentum for
the Games. The next two years will be critical to the success of the Games
and we are not complacent about the challenges ahead. Our success will
John Armitt
depend on the strong cross-party relationships we have secured at national
Chairman, Olympic Delivery Authority
and local levels, and we will continue to work closely with all major
political parties.

This guide explains what we are doing and updates you on our progress.
It will tell you how to get involved and make the most of the opportunities
available as we prepare to stage spectacular, memorable and inspirational
Games in just two years’ time.

About us Who does what
London 2012
London 2012 is the umbrella name and brand for the London Organising
Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the
Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the organisations delivering the Games.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic

Games (LOCOG)
LOCOG is the almost entirely privately financed company responsible for
preparing and staging the 2012 Games. LOCOG is led by Sebastian Coe
(Chair) and Paul Deighton (Chief Executive).

The cost of staging the Games is around £2 billion, which LOCOG raises
through sponsorship, ticket sales, merchandise and broadcast rights. LOCOG
is the direct link to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the
International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)

The ODA is the public agency responsible for developing and building the
permanent venues and infrastructure for the Games. The ODA is led by
John Armitt (Chairman) and David Higgins (Chief Executive).

The ODA is a publicly funded non-departmental public body. It is financed

by the £9.3bn public-sector funding package for the Games from central
Government, the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the National Lottery.
Seventy-five pence of every pound spent on the build is going towards
regenerating what is one of the most deprived parts of the country, creating
lasting benefits in the form of new homes, open spaces, new jobs and
world-class sports facilities.

The Olympic Board

The Olympic Board brings together the key stakeholders involved in the
Games: the Minister responsible for the Games, the Mayor of London,
LOCOG and the British Olympic Association (BOA). It is co-chaired by
the Minister for Sport and Olympics and the Mayor of London.
