Guide to copying data (i.e.

documents/images/videos
etc) to/from a PC to/from a USB Stick/SD card etc
1) Connect the USB stick/SD card etc to the computer. When you do this the following
window may pop-up

If it does, click on the 'open folder to view files' option, as highlighted in the image
above. If not open 'My Computer', this can be done from the desktop by clicking the
icon shown below.

It can also be done by going to the start menu and clicking 'computer'
Then by clicking on the right drive (in my case 'Removable Disk (I:))

2) When you have done this you will be looking at the data on the memory stick. Most
camera memory cards will have the folders shown in the following image, however if it
is a personal memory stick that contains documents and images etc the folders can be
arranged and named to personal preference.

To retrieve the images/videos from a camera memory card usually they are stored in
the DCIM folder. Keep clicking on the folders until you find the images.

If you are looking to copy data to a memory stick/card etc, click on the folders until you
are in the folder that you wish to copy the data to.
3) I have now navigated into the DCIM folder until I have found the images - see
screenshot below.
4)

Also note the 'address bar' (circled red), this tells the user what folder 'directory' you
are in. Think of the folder network as a tree, where you start in one master folder, and
within that folder can be any number of subfolders, and within them even more
subfolders.

5) This step is only required for copying data to a memory stick. Open the folder that
contains the data you want to copy to the memory stick if required e.g. 'My documents'
(i.e. if the data is on the desktop you do not need to open any folders).

For the sake of convenience you can place the folders you are copying data between
next to each other on the screen by clicking and holding on a corner of the window to
resize it, then by clicking and holding the bar at the top of the window, drag it around
the screen. See below for an example (here photos are being copied from the left
folder to the (empty) right folder).
6) Now you need to select the data (images/documents etc) that you wish to copy or
move to the other folder. There are a number of ways to do this. Firstly I will explain
how to copy all the items in the folder you are copying from to the destination folder.
Secondly I will show you how to copy them individually.

a. Copying all files

i. Make sure you have the folder you are copying the data from active (I'll
call this the source folder). This is done by clicking on the bar at the top
of the folder window.

ii. Now press 'Ctrl' and 'A' on the keyboard together. This selects
everything in the active folder, you should see all the files become
highlighted.
iii. Now 'right click' on any of the highlighted files then click on 'copy' in the
menu that appears, this temporarily copies the files that have been
highlighted into the computer memory, however you now need to tell it
where to put the copies.
iv. Now activate the folder window that you wish to copy the data to (as in
step i.)
v. Now 'right click' in any empty space in the folder you are copying the
data to and click 'paste', this 'pastes' the files into the new folder.
vi. That is the copying process complete, click anywhere inactive on the
screen to deselect all the highlighted files.

b. Copying individual files

i. Follow the same steps as above but ignore step ii. and in step iii. make
sure you right click on the particular file (image/document etc) that you
wish to copy.
