Job description

A. In the care of medical/surgical patients

 admits patients

¬ gives information about hospital routine, visiting hours and meals

 prepares the room for admission and discharge of the patients.

 prepares and administers oral, topical and parenteral medications.

¬ checks and records the vital signs of the patients.

¬ may act in the capacity of a senior nurse in the latter’s absence or when delegated.
¬ observes and report unusual symptoms of the patients. Institute remedial action
when appropriate and record those at chart.

 carry out doctor’s order and assists during procedures (diagnostic and
therapeutic).

¬ gives direct patient care.

¬ administers blood transfusions.

¬ attends in service progress and assumes social obligations.

¬ gives health teaching to patient and their family.

¬ performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitations during patient arrest.

 proper documentation of all the procedures that have been done to the patient
through charting.

¬ performs post-mortem care

B. The care of pre-op and post-op patients

Pre-operative patients

¬ allays anxiety.

¬ explains surgical procedure.

¬ explains preoperative procedures, post-operative routine to client and significant


others.

¬ obtains informed surgical consent.

¬ ensures that diagnostic tests are completed.

¬ evaluates nutritional status

¬ instructs client to be npo post midnight if required.

¬ prepares bowel if required

¬ monitors vital signs and reports immediately if different from previous baseline
vital signs.

¬ removes prosthetic devices.

¬ pre-medicate as ordered.
¬ provides quite environment.

Post-operative patients

¬ monitors vital signs, input and output, iv infusion, electrolytes, drainage tubes,
neurologic status and surgical wound dressing.

¬ begin turning, coughing and deep breathing exercise every hour after airway tube
is removed.

¬ suction secretions as needed.

¬ gives iv therapy drugs as ordered.

¬ uses voiding fluids and food when appropriate.

¬ keep siderails up and until client’s neurological status is
