speakers at the Fourth District
Republican Committee’s annual
spring breakfast, to be held
Monday at Buck’s Run Golf Club
in Mount Pleasant.
The breakfast will run from 7:30
to 9 a.m. Tickets are $50 per
person.
This is the largest fundraiser for
Fourth District Committee, with
about 300 guests expected to
attend.

Local supporters of the arts will
have the opportunity to enjoy
an evening of Bond-esque
elegance and excitement —
minus the dangerous explosions
and megalomaniacs bent on
world domination — at Artworks’
annual gala.
Artworks hosts its 10th annual
Spring Gala and Auction, “From
Artworks with Love” event 6 to 10 several years. She supports

in the area and the people
who support them,” said Mary
Morgan, manager of Artworks’
gift shop. “The gala is a major

which keeps our programming
going and our doors open.” Last
year, more than $35,300 was
raised at the event. Morgan
hopes to exceed that amount this
year.

In keeping with the event’s
007-theme, a James Bond
poster autographed by the actors
who have played the character
in the movies — including Sean
Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy
Dalton, George Lazenby and
Pierce Brosnan — and actors
who played supporting roles and
love interests — including Dame
Judy Dench, Jane Seymour,
Sean Bean and Richard “Jaws”
Kiel — will be up for auction.
New to the annual fundraiser is
a second silent auction held at
Artworks. Fifteen items are up for
bid in Artworks’ gift shop through
May 18.
“Most of the items that are in the
silent auction here, are works
from local artists,” Morgan said.
“We’re hoping to drum up some
support that way for people who
can’t make it to the gala. It also
brings people into Artworks to
see what we’re all about and
spread the word about the gala.”
Connie Freiberg, owner of the
Blue Cow Cafe, has donated
items for the annual auction for
a variety or quality programs
and helps make Big Rapids a
destination for art.
“I try to come up with something
interesting to do for the Artworks
gala because it is one of my
favorite organizations,” Freiberg
said. “(Artworks) doesn’t just
it serves everybody in the
community. People who are not
artists benefit from how diverse
their programs are. Artworks is
good for the community, because
it brings people into town.”
Tickets for the “$1,500
Raffle” are available at

Meijer gift card. Ticket are

hypnotist as softball
fundraiser
REMUS – Comedy stage
hypnotist Joseph Gelina will
appear at Chippewa Hills High
School at 6:30 p.m. on May 20
to perform in a fundraiser for the
schools’ girls softball team.
Gelina, a certified hypnotist, has
performed at corporate events,
comedy venues and many high
schools nationwide. He also is
the author of self-help audio
hypnosis programs ranging
from weight loss to smoking
cessation.
Audience members at the
family-friendly show may
expect to see willing volunteers
rapidly hypnotized and offered
suggestions. Some of Gelina’s
favorite suggestions include
turning himself invisible and
turning volunteers into celebrity
impersonators.
Tickets are $5 per student or $7
per adult in advance, or may be
purchased for $8.00 at the door.
Proceeds will benefit the school’s
