Interviewing the bookshop owner

Interviews are a useful method to:
 investigate issues in an in depth way
 discover how individuals think and feel about a topic and why they hold certain opinions
 investigate the use, effectiveness and usefulness of particular library collections and services
 inform decision making, strategic planning and resource allocation
 sensitive topics which people may feel uncomfortable discussing in a focus group
 add a human dimension to impersonal data
 deepen understanding and explain statistical data.

Advantages of interviews
 they are useful to obtain detailed information about personal feelings, perceptions and opinions
 they allow more detailed questions to be asked
 they usually achieve a high response rate
 respondents' own words are recorded
 ambiguities can be clarified and incomplete answers followed up
 interviewees are not influenced by others in the group

Disadvantages of interviews
 they can be very time-consuming: setting up, interviewing, transcribing, analyzing, feedback,
 different interviewers may understand and transcribe interviews in different ways.

Conducting on-site observation of the shop

On-site observations are one of the most effective tools with the analyst where the analyst personally goes to the
site and discovers the functioning of the system. As an observer, the analyst can gain firsthand knowledge of the
activities, operations, processes of the system on-site; hence here the role of an analyst is of an information
seeker.

This information is very meaningful as it is unbiased and has been directly taken by the analyst. This technique is
also time-consuming and the analyst should not jump to conclusions or draw inferences from small samples of
observation rather the analyst should be more patient in gathering the information. This method is however less
effective for learning about people's perceptions, feelings and motivations.

Document Analysis
Document analysis is a useful method to investigate:
 decision making and strategic planning
 resource allocation
 outcomes alignment and library policy

Advantages of document analysis

 it overcomes the difficulties of encouraging participation by users
 there are few costs involved other than staff time.

Disadvantages of document analysis

 it is not suitable to evaluate user opinions, needs or satisfaction with services
 some documents may be sensitive and not publicly available.

Visual IDE

Visual programming is a usage scenario in which an IDE is generally required. Visual IDEs allow users to create new
applications by moving programming building blocks or code nodes to create flowcharts or structure diagrams
that are then compiled or interpreted. These flowcharts often are based on the Unified Modeling Language.

An integrated development environment (IDE) (also known as integrated design environment or integrated
debugging environment) is a software application that provides comprehensive facilities to computer
programmers for software development. An IDE normally consists of:

 a source code editor

 a compiler and/or an interpreter
 build automation tools
 a debugger

Sometimes a version control system and various tools are integrated to simplify the construction of a GUI. Many
modern IDEs also have a class browser, an object inspector, and a class hierarchy diagram, for use with object-
oriented software development.
