CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Assumption and Rationale

The researchers are expecting to define or to know what the causative factors

behind the violence are. The researchers are expecting that there would be a mutual

respect, tolerance and communication and protecting human rights. The researchers

are also expecting that there would be an improvement on the lives of the victims after

the study. This study helps the victims but also the other researchers who study also

about domestic violence and they lived positively and to have meaningful life.

The researchers are expecting that those victims of violence can still view their

life positively or even just to lessen the effects or impacts that happen in their past life.

This study is also expecting that they overcome that downfall that caused them low

confidence. The home is where the interplay of “heart and hurt” occurs and where the

two faces of reality are starkly displayed. One face manifests unconditional love and

bonding sustained through the years and seen through imprints of shared

responsibilities and care, of devotion and loyalty. In many families, there are scars of

crises withstood and sacrifices freely given that can still be discerned.

Ethical Consideration
31
Those children who are victims of domestic violence as well as their parents. The

group knew that they were not easy to interview in their situation; they are physically

and emotionally abused. But the groups considered that as the research go on and give

the assurance that they would be safe and secure. The group would not force them to

answer the questions and give them time to think so that they would not be pressured.

Participants would be insuring that their identity would keep private.

Role of the Researcher

The role of a researcher in this topic is to become an investigator for them to

release or to express their own feelings emotionally, mentally, spiritually and socially for

the victims of domestic violence. Second role of the researcher is to determine the

factors and effects of domestic violence among children. Also one of the roles of the

researcher is being a teacher to the victims, and to help them to improve their self-

esteem or to move on from the trauma of their past life.

Research Design

These studies choose to use phenomenological research which was recognized

as a qualitative research method approach applicable to the study of phenomenon

important to the discipline of nursing. Because professional nursing practice was

32
enmeshed in people life experiences, phenomenology as a research method was well

suited to the investigation of phenomena important to nursing like violence and in pain.

According to Beck (1994) “Phenomenology affords nursing new ways to interpret

the nature of consciousness in the world”. This research is qualitative research design

since this research involves plenty of participants together of the perceptions and

answers that the researchers provide. This includes correlational research design which

explores the interrelationships among variables of interest without any active

interventions of the respondents. In addition, the researchers choose this design due to

the fact that this research studies the connections between the participants and the

factors involve in each respondent.

This research design helped to correlate the data which be gathered and

interpreted and differentiate the similarities and the difference of the information existing

in the data gathered in this design, the samples which are gathered by the researchers

are being able to test the relationship between the other data and to be illustrated in

order to determine the baseline of the data which signifies and allow the researchers to

mix the data into a more sufficient information which can help in the resolution of the

research study. The identification of the relationship of the data allowed the researchers

to interpret and to correlate the data and to reveal the factors that affects domestic

violence among children

33
Respondents of Study

The researchers have chosen to interview eighteen (18) children’s around Pasig

City. This respondent was chosen because this study was purposely for them and that it

might help them have better relationships with their families. Also, to clarify the reason

why they were in that situation.

Research Locale

Sample population for this research is taken around Pasig City. Specifically,

children ten (10) to fifteen (15) years old. This area will be the working ground basis of

this research, where the researchers will base data’s of the qualified participants. Ten

children was chosen because the researchers want to limit the study to a controlled

area only due to lack of time and lack of financial funds and still give an efficient

research.

The City of Pasig is one of the city municipalities of Metro Manila in

the Philippines. It is formerly the capital of the province of Rizal before Metro Manila

was formed. Located along the eastern border of Metro Manila, Pasig is bordered on

the west by Quezon City and Mandaluyong City; to the north by Marikina City; to the

south by Makati City, Pateros, and Taguig City; and to the east by Antipolo City, the

municipality of Cainta and Taytay in the province of Rizal.

34
Pasig is a primarily residential and industrial city but increasingly becoming a

growing commercial area. Being the former capital of Rizal, the old provincial capitol

was located in Pasig, in the outskirt of Shaw Boulevard.

The eastern part of the city is where most of Pasig's financial resources are

primarily concentrated. It includes numerous factories, warehouses, establishments and

commercial facilities primarily situated in Ortigas Center and flank along E. Rodriguez

Jr. Avenue (C-5). The western part was mostly dominated with residential areas.

Samples and Sampling Technique

The researchers would be selecting eighteen (18) respondents to participate in

the study. This number would be vital for the study representing the whole population of

abused children on the study. The participants include the children ten to fifteen years

old and their parents if possible.

Purposive sampling starts with a purpose in mind and the sample is thus

selected to include people of interest and exclude those who do not suit the purpose.

This method is popular with newspapers and magazines which want to make a

particular point. This is also true for marketing researchers who are seeking support for

their product. They typically start with people in the street, first approaching only 'likely

suspects' and then starting with questions that reject people who do not suit.

The researchers choose to use the Purposive sampling a non-random sampling

method in which the researchers select participants based on personal judgment about

35
which ones will be the most representatives of informative. This would help the study in

gathering the data needed and would represent the information in a non-random

sampling method in which the researchers select the participants in order to gather data

in them. This design is big help in this research study it can identify the data to be

interpret and can also help in validating the information gathered in the participants. In

this sampling design the researchers can be guided to choose the participants which

provided the informative data which can be collected and interpreted by the

researchers. This design also can enhance the possibilities of the study to avoid

necessities in having unavoidable problem in gathering data.

Data Collection and Procedure

The data gathering obtained through the help and participation of the respondent

around Pasig City. The researchers utilized the free time of the respondent, and take

the opportunity to obtain necessary information from the participants.

The researchers started with asking the respondents about their situation

following the process of interview. The researcher would let the participant to express

his or her inner thought regarding their traumatic experience. As part of this research,

giving enough time for the participants is necessary to obtain the purpose of the

instruments.

36
Reporting of Findings

Once analysis of all the data is complete, the expected findings of this study

should yield a more comprehensive look at domestic violence. The findings may be

generalized if one may look at data from a different place. In this study most victims of

domestic violence are identified as intimate partners, other relatives, individuals that

have a child in common, or co-habitants as opposed to just a certain group. By using a

more comprehensive definition of domestic violence in this study, it may provide a better

representation of how many are affected by domestic violence. Furthermore, it may also

provide a more representative amount of the prevalence of domestic violence to a

certain age group or certain offense. Moreover, by analyzing agency calls for service, by

type of victimization, it may provide insight to the issues discussed above, such as,

unreported incidents of domestic violence

Methods of Verifications

This is to verify that the data have been collected is accurate and true in

answering the questions presented. The researchers established rapport with the

respondents in order for them to be comfortable and open to the researchers.

In other way, researcher also observed the respondents the way they talked, the

way they moved and their facial expression this is to verify that the respondents is

giving the right information to the interviewer.
