Go Green with SODAMCO
• The main sustainability benefit of EPSILONE admixture use comes from optimization of the mix constituents in order to reduce both the embodied
carbon dioxide and the water content of the concrete without any loss in other properties.
• At SODAMCO, we aim to guide our clients to use TGS (Third Generation Superplasticizers) technology, in order to contribute in the reduction of embodied
carbon dioxide emission, knowing that TGS's are very efficient at low dosage and their production emits less CO2 than 2nd generation superplasticizers.
nd use
• We recommend the use of typical 1st generation plasticizers for lower water reduction requirements and se off ASTM Type A, B & D for additional
workability retention.

Environment protection, global warming and climate change are becoming an increasing priority for everybody – nations, companies and individuals.
Reducing carbon footprints is the topmost concern.
Carbon footprint is a measure of the impact of human activities leave on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, mea-
sured in units of carbon dioxide’. It is meant to be useful for individuals and organizations to conceptualize their personal or organizational impact in
contributing to global warming.
Reduce your carbon footprint. Whether in coal, oil or gas, carbon is the essential ingredient of all fossil fuels. When these fuels are burned to provide
energy, carbon dioxide (CO2), a “greenhouse gas”, is released to the Earth’s atmosphere.
As we’ve become more dependent on carbon-based fuels, we’ve seen a rapid increase in the atmospheric concentration of CO2; from around 280
parts per million (ppm) before the industrial revolution, to 370 ppm today. If current trends of fossil fuel use continue the concentration of CO2 is
likely to exceed 700 ppm by the end of this century... leading to faster global warming and more ecological disturbances around the world.
Every 1 ton of cement produced leads to about 0.9 tons of CO2 emissions
and a typical cubic meter of concrete contains about 15% by weight of
cement.
Numerous articles have been written about reduction of CO2 emissions
from concrete primarily through the use of lower amounts of cement and
higher amounts of supplementary cementitious material (SCM) such as fly
ash and slag and use of high range water reducing admixtures for reduc-
tion of water usage.
Since a cubic meter of concrete weighs about 2.4 tons, CO2 emissions from
1 ton of concrete varies between 0.10 to 0.16 tons.
Approximately 95% of all CO2 emissions from a cubic meter of concrete
are from cement manufacturing; therefore, it is no wonder that much
attention is paid to using greater amounts of SCM and high performance
admixtures.
What Is Concrete?
Concrete is one of the most versatile and widely used building materials in the world. It plays a vital role in many aspects of everyday life – from the
buildings we work and live in, to the roads, bridges and railways that transport us. It is a key element in the social and economic well being of us all.
Throughout its lifecycle, concrete can deliver real sustainability benefits, but it also has some negative impacts. Sustainability is a key issue for the
concrete industry in our region.
The use of concrete can offer significant sustainability benefits in the life cycle of buildings and structures. Its thermal mass is highly efficient in reducing
the energy needed to heat and cool buildings, and it also allows a high level of air tightness. Concrete is highly durable and so needs minimal maintenance
and can thus reduce whole life costs. Furthermore, the long life of the material means that concrete structures are appropriate for change of use.
Concrete’s mass and damping qualities allow good acoustic performance and minimize movement, reducing floor vibration. This is particularly
advantageous for high density accommodation. Concrete is non-combustible and has a slow rate of heat transfer which makes it a highly effective
barrier to the spread of fire. The nature of the material also ensures that it is resilient to flood damage.
We are tackling the industry’s own performance heads on, enhancing positive attributes and managing and reducing other impacts through technical
innovation and concrete design. The industry is committed to behaving in a responsible way to improve sustainability performance and to deliver
sustainable construction solutions.
Can We Make Concrete GREENER?
Enviromental Management
A high level of aggregate packing reduces the cavities between the aggregates,
and thereby the need for cement paste. This results in better concrete properties
and a better environmental profile, due to a smaller amount of cement. When
having experimentally determined the packing, the density, and the grain size
distribution of each aggregate material, it is possible to calculate the packing of any combination of aggregates using computer program.
Another way of minimizing the cement content in a concrete is to substitute parts of the cement with other Pozzolanic materials. In our region, it is
common to produce concrete with fly ash, GGBFS and/or micro silica fume. These materials are residual products (by - products from production of
electricity, iron and steel making and production of silicon respectively) and both have a Pozzolanic effect. Thus, a material with large environmental
impact, i.e. the cement, is substituted with materials with reduced environmental impacts.
In order to reduce the consumption of raw materials and to minimize the waste generated from demolished concrete structures, surplus, and production errors,
crushed concrete can be reused as aggregate. It is expected that the use of recycled aggregate in concrete, for passive environmental class will be allowed.
Also recycled water, initially used for washing out the aggregates from surplus concrete and cleaning the production equipment, is allowed in the new
concrete standard.

It is also possible to reduce a concrete’s environmental impact by reducing Trucks run on gas engines

the environmental impacts in cement and concrete production. The cement
manufacturer has many activities concerned with the reduction of
environmental impacts. With regards to concrete production, experience Waste water, storm water
and aggregates are recycled
and reused Supplementary Cementitious
with reductions of primarily water consumption, energy consumption Materials (SCM) are used
instead of Portland cement
and waste production is available. Even though the contribution of concrete
production to a concrete’s environmental profile is not so big, it does
give a contribution, and should be taken seriously - environmentally and
economically - by every concrete producer.
SODAMCO's products, particularly EPSILONE, answer the demand for green in a variety of ways:
• Optimized Portland cement use - Rather than only using portland cement, which properties for lower placing energy (vibration) and provide higher workability that
requires an especially energy-intensive manufacturing process, Epsilone is highly assist in reduction in construction times leading to reduced labor requirements.
effective with the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as portland
cement replacements. • Enhanced durability & Quality – EPSILONE contributes to the overall durability and life
expectancy of a building by reducing corrosion, service life repair and other detrimental
• Reduction of water use - Water is becoming an increasingly precious resource and effects.
reductions in water use have become a key environmental indicator. EPSILONE high
range water reducing types allow significant reductions to be made in the water • Carbon Footprint - The main sustainability benefit of admixture use comes from
demand of concrete without affecting consistence (workability). At the same time, optimization of the mix constituents in order to reduce both the embodied carbon
environmental performance and/or durability and strength will generally be improved. dioxide and the water content of the concrete without any loss in other properties.
• Reduced energy - EPSILONE contributes to the reduction of energy use by providing • Natural Resources - Epsilone enhances concrete performance even with use of recycled
more fluidity in the fresh concrete resulting in reduced batching energy, pumping materials and reduces the use of virgin materials, which in turn reduces environmental
energy & transportation energy. Epsilone HP series can also provide self consolidated burdens.
