At the end of the module, students should be able to running scan disk and
defrag the hard disk.

Activity 1: Error Checking

Notes: Error-checking is a tool to check for file system errors and bad sectors on the hard disk

1. Open My Computer, then select the Local Disk (C)

2. On the File menu, click Properties.

3. Local Disk (C:) Properties dialog box appears.

4. Click Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.

Click Here

5. Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad
sectors check box. Then click Start.

Click Start

6. Checking Disk Local Disk (C:) appears.

7. A message Disk Check Complete will appear once you have succeeded scanning.
Click OK.

8. Close the Local Disk (C:) Properties dialog box.

Activity 2: Disk Defragment

Notes: Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard
disk so that each occupies a single, contiguous space on the volume. As a result, your system
can gain access to your files and folders and save new ones more efficiently. By consolidating
your files and folders, Disk Defragmenter also consolidates the volume's free space, making it
less likely that new files will be fragmented. Disk Defragmenter is a system utility for analyzing
local volumes and locating and consolidating fragmented files and folders.

1. Click Start Æ All Programs Æ Accessories Æ System Tools Æ Disk

Defragmenter.

2. Disk Defragmenter dialog box appears. Click on Partition C, then click Defragment.

Click Partition C

Click Defragment

3. Disk Defragmenter will then initiate analyzing partition C.

4. Next Defragment begins.

5. Once completed the message box appears. Click View Report.

6. The Defragmentation Report will appears. Click Close, to close the report.

7. Click Close in Disk Defragmenter dialog box.

Click Close

8. Click File, then click Exit to close the Disk Defragmenter.

9. Repeat Activity 2 to defragment partition D.
