Is a quaint community with many things to offer.
Regardless of your interest, we have something for you.
If you are a recreational enthusiast, we have many
activities for you to enjoy. We have two large parks for
games and activities or just for you to sit next to the
river and enjoy a picnic lunch. The Rail Trail is a
beautiful, peaceful path through woods and past
beautiful farmland. This trail is very well maintained and
marked by the Town and Village. One can take the trail
south for miles through Vermont. It is suitable for all
ages and ability levels. The Mettowee affords the angler
in the family some great fishing access spots. It is also
a great place to drop in with kayaks or tubes for fun
with the family. For the more adventure seekers, there
are white water portions as well.
In early summer there are several places for fresh U-
pick berries. In the fall apples abound at our local
orchard. Many farm stands can be found along
roadsides providing garden fresh vegetables. There
also many places you can get fresh eggs, cheese, beef
and other farm products.
Indoor activities plentiful too. The Pember Library and
Museum is a great place to take the kids to experience
natural history. Mr. Franklin Pember collected a wide
range of animals from all continents to be displayed.
The Pember provides their visitors with an up close
look at exotic and domestic animals alike. They also
have other interesting things to experience. The staff is
always there to tell stories about their many exhibits
and explain the origins of the animals. They are open
Tuesday 9-5, Wed.-Fri 1-5 and Saturday 10-3. They are
closed Sunday and Monday. Admission is free but a
donation to this marvelous treasure would be greatly

The Slate Valley Museum is another interesting
option for indoor family activities. The museum
showcases the history and experiences of the area’s
ancestry in the quest to develop the slate industry.
Insight is given to how the migrants came to be here,
how they succeeded, how they failed and everything in
between. There are many real life exhibits of equipment
and tools used by the slate industry in all eras. The staff
at the museum are a joy to meet and will provide a
rewarding experience for all. They are open Tues-Friday
1-5, Saturday 10-4 and closed Sunday and Monday.
Admission is $5 for adults and children under 12 are
free. They also welcome groups so please contact them
for details. More information about the museum can be

Another interesting event hosted by these two
museums is their monthly “First Friday’s” event. The
museums jointly host local artists and finger food to be
enjoyed in an open, welcoming setting. This event
begins at 7pm and goes until 9pm. There is a lovely
footbridge crossing the Mettowee that connects the two
museums. It is amazing to see the talent showcased
that is sometimes hidden in the hills.
If music is more to your liking then you definitely do not
want to miss the concert series in the park. Each year
the Village of Granville brings in talented bands on
Thursday nights for the summer. Residents and visitors
alike bring their lawn chairs and blankets to the park to
enjoy the mid-summer night air and great music.
Children dance and play freely through the park while
adults dance and clap, mingle amongst each other or
simply sit back, relax and enjoy the show. For more

Granville is home to many civic organizations that
make our community what it is. The Lions and Lioness
clubs, the Rotary Club, VFW, American Legion,
K of C, Chamber of Commerce, numerous churches,
various fire companies, Rescue squad and many other
organizations are manned by countless volunteers who
give of themselves to the community. You can always
find a family style supper, pancake breakfast or other
interesting events hosted by these organizations. Every
organization is always looking for new members and
can provide many opportunities to individuals to feel
the gratification of giving back to the community. The
Granville community is very blessed to have these
organizations within our borders.
The Granville Police Benevolent Association
operates a Youth Center for the area children to enjoy.
For a nominal fee children can attend dances on Friday
and Saturday nights and they also provide after school
activities as well.
Looking for a good meal? Well we have many well-
established restaurants to satisfy your palate, many of
which offer outdoor seating to enjoy the summer season.
With so many options to choose from, you will just have
to make several visits to Granville to try them all!
Granville is also home to diverse retail and service
establishments who have made their mark by providing
knowledgeable and friendly service to their customers.
Many businesses in the Granville area have been owned
and/or employed by the same staff for many years.
These folks not only know their industry but they also
get to know their customers and make sure that
everyone that walks in their doors, walks out satisfied.

It crosses the Battenkill in Eagleville, NY

GREATER GREENWICH CHAMBER OF
COMMERCE, INC 21ST ANNIVERSARY.
In 1990 a group of dedicated businesses in the village of Greenwich
formed and incorporated the Greater Greenwich Chamber of
Commerce, Inc. Beginning with just forty members, current Chamber
membership has grown to over 200 businesses, individuals and
organizations from Greenwich, Easton, Cambridge, Salem,
Schuylerville, Saratoga and the Capital District.
These are the objectives of the organization. “To preserve the
competitive enterprise system of business by creating a better
understanding and appreciation of the importance of the business
person and a concern for his or her problems and promoting business
and community growth and development in the area.”

The GGCC has a physical office that is manned throughout the
week. The office is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00am till
3:00 pm or by appointment.
The Chamber maintains its database-driven website at
www.greenwichchamber.org. All member business information can
be found with a simple search on their name or category. This
provides small businesses without their own website the opportunity
to be found on the internet. Increasingly businesses are linking their
website to the chamber website. In addition, the site includes the
general membership application, recent newsletters, Chamber and
local events information, registration forms for events such as the
Whipple City 5K Race and parade as well as descriptions of the
health insurance programs offered thru the Chamber.
Chamber volunteers spend an increasing amount of time on
community events. The Chamber sponsors and participates in the
September Harvest Festival in the Village business district. Since
1990 area children and community members have enjoyed the annual
Halloween Parade and costume-judging contest in October. The
Chamber and our community have worked together to decorate our
streets with holiday banners & holiday tree lights. Community
caroling in Mowry Park is organized each December by Chamber
volunteers.
2011 Whipple City Festival. The Whipple City Festival has been
sponsored and run by the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce
for 19 years this coming June. It began as a way to promote
Greenwich businesses to visitors and to thank the community for
their support of the Greenwich Businesses. It has evolved into the
premier spring event in Southern Washington County. Folks come
to the beautiful village parks to enjoy quality musical entertainment,
great food, the carnival, craft fair and free horse & wagon rides.
Annual favorites are the great food selections and relaxing & visiting
with friends and family in the parks. The 19th annual event begins
on Friday June 17th with a 6:00 pm” Circus” themed parade. It
begins at the K Mart Plaza and ends at Mowry Park. Saturday bright
and early starts with the running of the Whipple City 5K Race at
8:30. Last year’s race brought out over 200 runners. The day begins
with a full list of activities, info booths by community organizations,
the country craft fair in Mowry Park, animal demonstrations in
Dorr Park on Main St. and children and family activities along
Academy St. near the town & village municipal buildings, free horse
& wagon rides all afternoon. Saturday early afternoon, entertainment
is by Kanagrooster, with great sounds and easy listening. And
Saturday evening’s entertainment by the well know Irish group Hair
of the Dog from the Capital District. Sunday afternoon our “special
father” day entertainer is Harold Ford and the Cash Band with their
tribute performance to Johnny Cash.
The Family Carnival area will host Grin Mobile Laser Tag for kids
and our Carnival games are great affordable fund for the whole
family. Once again there will be the celebrity Dunking Booth, come
on down and dunk a celebrity for your favorite community or youth
organization. Dorr Park will hopefully be home to various animal
exhibits, alpaca, emus and reindeer once again this year.

A little bit about Washington County: Washington County is a county located in the U.S. State of New York. It is part of the
Glens Falls, New York, Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2000 census, the population was 61,042. It was named for the
Revolutionary War general (and later President of the United States) George Washington. The county seat is Fort Edward.
When counties were established in New York State in 1683, the present Washington County was part of Albany County. This was
an enormous county, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory,
extending westward to the Pacific Ocean. This county was reduced in size on July 3, 1766 by the creation of Cumberland County,
and further on March 16, 1770 by the creation of Gloucester County, both containing territory now in Vermont. On March 12, 1772,
what was left of Albany County was split into three parts, one remaining under the name Albany County. The other two were called
Tryon County (later renamed Montgomery County) and Charlotte County.
In 1784, the name "Charlotte County" was changed to honor George Washington, the eventual President of the USA. of America.

In the unspoiled rolling hills and verdant fields
of Salem, NY, you’ll find a remarkable
confluence of art and agriculture, crowned by
the giant orange sculptures atop Cary Hill, on
loan to Salem Art Works, a sculpture park and
artists’ colony open daily, hosting glassblowing,
open studios, exhibits, public iron pours,
concerts, theatrical performances, and more.
As eye-popping as the sculptures are, they
complement rather than compete with the lush
countryside. Washington County boasts more
historic covered bridges than any other; Salem
hosts three of the county’s four, all of which
span the clear waters of the Battenkill River.
History buffs will want to visit the Revolutionary
War Cemetery, the final resting place of 101
soldiers, with a total of 1,034 stones dating
back to 1769.
Salem abounds with intriguing opportunities
you won’t find in any mall. Nestled among the
sandwich shops, hardware and drug stores,
service stations and auto parts stores that
inhabit every village are the specialty shops
and businesses that define the town.
At the north end of the business district, at 211
Main Street, Queenie, the proprietress of The
Queen of Seam Tailoring and Alterations,
holds court in her shop, where, with a skill
unmatched in the county, she can alter clothing
from bride’s dresses to leather jackets. At 196
Main Street, original watercolors, acrylics, and
pastels by Mary Sinnamon and photography
by Ronald Sinnamon, on exhibit and for sale,
grace the walls at the Beauty of the Earth
Gallery/Studio. Two storefronts to the south,
Blind Buck Interiors & Discount Fabric
Outlet boasts more than 70,000 samples from
more than 40 fabric companies, as well as a
stock of high quality fabrics at greatly
discounted prices. In operation for 27 years,
Blind Buck maintains a quality workroom and
showroom for custom upholstery, slipcovers
and draperies. Across the street, at 189 Main,
Jackson Traders can outfit any sportsman for
hunting, fishing or hiking, and provide the
handcrafted jewelry to placate his lady when he
announces his impending absence.
Heading east on Broadway from the town’s
main intersection, you’ll pass the historic
former church from which a battle of the
Revolutionary War was fought, now housing

classic musicals are performed on the recently
renovated Mainstage. Down East Broadway in
the quiet residential neighborhood just past

the Historic Salem Courthouse, you’ll discover
the shop of Timothy Shea, Master
Metalsmith, where he designs and sells
custom gold and sterling jewelry and executes
all manner of jewelry repair. Shea’s store is
open year-round and he also sells via his

A few properties further east you’ll discover
Fiber Kingdom, two renovated 18th century
barns, with studio and shops holding a broad
selection of fibers, yarns (many of them
unique); equipment for spinning, weaving,
knitting, and felting; and a flock of
extravagantly beautiful angora rabbits, the
result of more than 25 years of selective
breeding for quality spinning fibers. Heading
eastward toward the Vermont border, before
you turn around to explore the rest of Salem,
you’ll find Laura’s Garden, an intimate
greenhouse that displays and sells vegetable
and blooming plants and fresh-cut flowers,
including exquisite floral arrangements for
special occasions.
Traveling south from the village of Salem, the
hamlet of Shushan provides a home to one of
the area’s more unique stores, TRIP’s
Antiques, Garden & Gifts. Trip’s features a
wide selection of reproduction Victorian-style
cast iron urns and planters to compliment a
vast array of decorative garden items. There’s
an extensive collection of antiques and gifts
that are unusual, interesting, and fun … all
guaranteed to work with every budget large or
small. Redgate Lodging, a unique, romantic
and very private hideaway in Shushan, is a
renovated apartment in a 19th century barn on

FEEDER CANAL The construction of the old Champlain
Canal was begun in 1817. The Canal officially opened to
boat traffic in 1822. It provided direct access for freight and
passenger boats from Lake Champlain at Whitehall to Fort
Edward on the Hudson River, completing an inland route
from the St. Lawrence River to the ports of New York City.
The Feeder Canal Alliance is a not-for-profit organization
created in 1987 to preserve, promote and maintain the
historic Feeder Canal. In addition, the Feeder Canal Alliance
was formed to create a park along the Canal and unite the
communities through cultural activities. The Feeder Canal
provides water from the Hudson River to the Champlain
Canal and from the early 1800s until 1928 provided a means
of transportation by canal boats for people and goods. In
1928 the canal was abandoned, and the canal and towpath
became overgrown and littered with trash. The canal and
towpath today provide recreational opportunities to members
of our community as well as providing a glimpse into the
past. The Feeder Canal is the last remaining original canal
in New York State. The seven-mile Feeder Canal Linear Park
is an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to use
the trail and learn of its historical significance to our
community. Walkers, hikers, joggers, cross country skiers
and bicyclists are using the trail; canoeists, and kayakers,

Winter Raptor Fest 2012 Celebrates Washington County
Grasslands Birds of Prey! See hawks and owls navigate a
“tunnel of talons” formed by youth volunteers in one feature of an
amazing free-flight raptor show presented by Talons Master
Falconers on both days of Winter Raptor Fest 2012 weekend!
Volunteer to be part of the human “obstacle” course and you could
feel the feathers of the outstretched wings of one of these majestic
raptors brush your head!
Live Bird of Prey programs presented by Adirondack Wildlife
Refuge & Rehab Center, the new Wildlife Institute of Eastern
NY, North Country Wild Care and New York State Wildlife Rehab
Council offer plenty of opportunities to meet and learn about many
of the owls, hawks and falcons native to the Washington County
Grasslands. This unique agricultural area received Audubon New
York’s Important Bird Area, or IBA, designation a decade ago.
Join a New York State DEC Wildlife Biologist for a fascinating
look into the state’s program to monitor state endangered Short-
eared Owls and threatened Northern Harriers. Other interesting
programs include presentations about the decline of American
Kestrels and what you can do to help by the Southern Adirondack
Audubon chapter, at-risk songbirds that depend on early-
successional forest by Albany Pine Bush and recycling and
composting by Greenwich Citizen’s Committee.
Youth snowshoe races, horse-drawn sleigh rides, kid’s activity
tables and more round out this second annual fun and exciting
Winter Raptor Fest weekend on March 10 & 11, 2012!
The Washington County Grasslands Important Bird Area is critical
to the survival of endangered Short-eared Owls in New York State.
It also provides important habitat for almost a dozen other
threatened and at-risk grassland birds, including Northern Harriers,
Upland Sandpipers, American Kestrels, Eastern Meadowlarks and
Grasshopper Sparrows. Winter Raptor Fest is co-sponsored by
Friends of the Washington County Grasslands IBA and Washington
County Tourism Association; GlensFallsRegion.com is the
presenting business sponsor. Visit the official

 ABOUT THE COVER: This year’s cover pays tribute to the Winter
Raptor Fest organized by Laurie LaFond, President
Friends of the Washington County Grasslands IBA.
The cover was designed by VICTORIA BOMBARD-BUSHEY, Director
of Design and Marketing, Kingsbury Printing Co., Inc. in Hudson
Falls, New York.
Victoria grew up in the family business learning how to make paste
ups, negatives and plates. Standing on a box in the dark room opaquing
negatives with her mother and then collating forms in the pressroom
with her dad.
Once the printing industry changed from darkroom practices to
computer to plate; Victoria showed an interest in the computer design
part of the business and started working on simple business cards
and invitations. After high school, Victoria went off to college and
graduated cum laude from Paul Smith’s College and cum laude from
Plattsburgh State University.
After college, once again Victoria returned to the company and to the
computer design work that interested her the most. The company has grown over the past twenty six
years and with Victoria’s talent and schooling in computer design, she has been a major asset to the
business. From business cards to newsletters, brochures and unique one of kind invitations to
complex full color work, Victoria has helped to expand the company’s capabilities and has enabled
the company to offer top notch digital and offset printed products.
Victoria resides in Queensbury, New York with her husband Michael and their eighteen month old
son Collin.
