A Ministerial Task Team has been established to develop a growth strategy for the Book Sector. The Task
Team reports to the Minister of Arts and Culture.

MANDATE
The Task Team has been mandated to demonstrate the strategic importance of the Book Sector and deliver a
Growth Strategy for the Book Sector within a legislative framework.
The Creative Industries are part of the Industrial Action Policy Plan 2 (IPAP 2). The Task Team aims to identify how
the Book Sector can meet the objectives of IPAP 2 and Government’s New Growth Path.
The responsibilities of the Task Team include the following:
• Consolidate sector data, including studies that have been conducted by various bodies over the years
• Develop a growth strategy for the sector
• Address key Government imperatives
• Enhance the cultural, social and economic aspects of the Book Sector
• Make use of linguistic ties to strengthen social and economic relations throughout the region
• Provide solutions to specific problems in the sector.
The Task Team will report in the second half of 2011 and its recommendations will feed into a sector growth
Strategy for the Department of Arts and Culture. The strategy will be used as a basis for a National Book Policy to be
presented to Government.
Individuals, groups and organisations are invited to make written submissions on matters relating to the mandate.
Any other matters that might be of relevance to the South African Book Sector can also be brought to the attention
of the Task Team.
