History of La Naval Lodge No. 269

Most extracted from the La Naval Lodge No. 269 Directory 2002

Our humble beginning can be traced through distinct effort of the then
CDR CELSO ALVAREZ and LCDR EDGARDO C. PEREZ . Both gentleman were
Philippine Navy Officers and  then incumbent Worshipful Masters of Cavite
Lodge No. 2 and Primera Luz Filipina Lodge No. 69 respectively. There
exchange of ideas and information during a District No. 10 Meeting in 1978
have lead to the creation of La Naval Lodge No. 269. Both Masters have
agreed each other to sponsor a Fellowship intended for PN Masons, for them
to know one another in the daqrk as well as in the light. The fellowship held
in August 1978 and participated by at least  35 PN Masons had became
instrumental in the to the proposition of forming a PN Square and Compass
Club. The election of Officers was immediately held then and there with
then CDR FRANCISCO TOLIN who was elected President with WB CELSO
ALVAREZ  and WB EDGARDO C. PEREZ as Vice President and Secretary
respectively.

A monthly meeting were held thereafter until the senior officers were
reassigned aboardship and to other units outside Metro Manila and Cavite
areas which made the Club became idle. In 1983 however,  WB EDGARDO C.
PEREZ together with WB VICENTE C. ESCALA JR., BRO .EMMANUEL D.
GOB. VW ROMEO ARGOTA and VW OLIMPIO CASTAÑEDA revived the
club membership not only for PN personnel but also to all interested Masons
in Cavite. New set of Officers have been  elected and was  inducted at the
then Sealift  Amphibious Command (SAC, now PHILFLEET) Officers
Wardroom on October 1983 with WB PEREZ as President WB ESCALA, JR
as Vice President  and BRO. GOB as the Secretary. With this turning point,
the Club had once gain active which revived the interest of the old Masons
and  attracted not only more members and  but also non-Masons to seek
membership in the Craft.

With the remarkably growing numbers of Navy personnel who were

attracted and subsequently seeking membership to the Craft, the proposal
to organize a new lodge inside the Naval Base was considerably acknowledge.
With the support of VW CASTAÑEDA the then District Deputy Grand
Master (DDGM),  a petition to form a new lodge signed by 38 members of
the Craft was subsequently  approved when the then Grand Master MW
ROSENDO HERRERA issued the Dispensation on January 16, 1984
authorizing WB PEREZ , BRO GOB.  BRO ERLINDO A EROLIN and all
Masons therein listed,  to initiate pass and raise petitioners to the three
degrees of Freemasonry.

LA NAVAL LODGE was constituted in an impressive Masonic and Naval

Ceremony by MW HERRERA on January 20, 1984 with the GM, DDGM and
the officers and member of the lodge in full white dress Naval uniforms .
Both the GM and the DDGM were Ship Captains themselves. Thereafter,
WB PEREZ and the Brethren started the labors of the lodge  with the
initiation, passing and raising of Bros VICTORINO PURUNGGANAN,
FEDERICO DELA CRUZ, JOSE RIVAS and the late HERMINIGILDO
MUNION in March 1984.  At the 1984 Annual Communication of the Grand
lodge of the Philippines, the La Naval Lodge UD had proven its worth to be a
duly constituted lodge. It won the approval of the Grand Lodge of the
Philippines as a regular lodge under its jurisdiction and was assigned the
Lodge Number 269. The Lodge was named after the "Our Lady of La Naval",
the Patroness of the Philippines Navy. It was so chosen by the Brethren to
emphasize  that the Chartered Members of the lodge were Navy personnel
and person who were either in the related professions or friends of the
Philippines Navy.

Taking into consideration the fallowing facts the number assigned to the
lodge maybe considered coincidental,  but the member there from would
rather look at it as providential:  The origin of the Lodge could be traced to
the late WB Celso Alvarez of Cavite Lodge No. 2 and WB Edgardo Perez of
Primera Luz  Filipina Lodge No. 69.  La Naval Lodge had its initial Masonic
labors in the Temple of Cavite lodge (the first light ). The first Masonic
Lodge established in the Philippines was founded by two (2) Spanish Naval
Officers and was known as La Primera  Luz Filipina (The First Light ). WB
Perez, a Naval Officer and the first Worshipful Mater of La Naval  was
raised and serve as Worshipful Master of Primera Luz Filipina Lodge No. 69.
Taken together the numbers o0f Cavite Lodge No. 2 and Primera Luz Filipina
Lodge No.69, formed the Number of La Naval which is 269.

The Charter of the lodge was presented in a very solemn ceremony presided
by MW REYNATO PUNO on June 30, 1984. On the same day,  RW REYNOLD
FAJARDO installed the officers of the lodge as fallows:

Worshipful Master                         WB Edgardo C. Perez PM

Junior Steward                              Bro  Alfredo Binauhan
Custodian of work                         VW Romeo Argota

Auditor                                           Bro  Alfredo Moises

Almoner                                         Bro Romeo Tapayan
Master of Banquet                         Bro  Augusto Laudato
Tyler                                              Bro  Victorino Purugganan

With all the formalities of setting up a lodge,  the Brethren set their eyes
on erecting their own Masonic Temple. Fortunately,  a vacated building was
found inside Sangley Point,  a former US Naval base.  Doubly fortunate was
the fact that the Base Commander at the time was CAPT JUANITO
CORTEZ PN (GSC) later Commodore who was very considerate on the needs
of Navy Masons. He readily agreed to lease  at a token price the use of the
building.  With the contract signed,  the brethren  through their close
relationship with the Navy authorities were able to secure donations from
various PN Unit Commander and Civilian friends.  The renovation of the
building with Masonic paraphernalia was completed in 3 months time.

The dedication of the Temple for the Greater Glory of the Grand Architect
of the Universe was held on October 20. 1984 with the Grand Master, the
Officers of the Grand Lodge and the Masons of District No.10 conducting a
very impressive and symbolic ceremony.
As the Brethren meet regularly to transact business and conduct matters
related to the craft as a duly constituted lodge,  La Naval Lodge No. 269 is
proud to announce to the Masonic World its very memorable history with
outstanding accomplishments.

The year 2000 marks the 16th year of our lodge existence, it boasts the
hosting of the 69th District Annual Convention,  the first of its kind VWB
ARTURO Y. CAPADA a retired  Commodore was the District Deputy Grand
Master, and the Host Worshipful Master then was Brother RUBEN U
MACALINDONG,  Bro BOBBY S GUINTO and Bro ANTONIO U
CORONADO were the Senior and Junior Wardens respectively.

La Naval Lodge No.269, the Masonic lodge of men of the honored profession
of the Naval service continues to be the vanguard of Truth, Brotherly Love
and Affection in the armed forces of the Philippines. It continue to
survived and lived  in harmony, for the last 22 years in observance to the
universally accepted  tenets, principles and teaching of Freemasonry. Not
until August 18,  2006 when  for some reasons they believed was right, at
least 24 of its members under the name of the La Naval Lodge Number 269
have tendered their declaration  to dissolve their  ties  with the Most
Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines by
virtue of La Naval Lodge # 269 Resolution 03-06.

In resolution, the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted

Masons of the Phillipnes then under the helm of MW Romeo A Yu have issued
an edicts  which was  approved by the brethren during the session at its
Annual Communication on April 26-28, 2007 (Ref: Letter from Danilo D
Angeles  to all Grand Lodges in Fraternal relation with the GLP dated July 4,
2007, published by http://glphils.org/edicts_4.html#). The edicts resolved
as read that "ONLY those persons specifically named are no longer
recognized as Master Masons in  our Grand Jurisdiction  as their names were
already expunged from  our Masonic records.

By  the blessings of heaven,  the La Naval Lodge No. 269  is still in existence
and will continue its labor under the Jurisdiction of the MOST WORHIPFUL
GRAND LODGE OF FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS OF THE PHILIPPINES
(GLP) .
