IFSSO Co-Sponsors International Symposium in Japan


The International Federation of Social Science Organizations
(IFSSO) and Nagoya University co-sponsored the International
Symposium on “Social Environment in Contemporary East
Asia in the Age of Globalization” last February 21-22, 2011 in
Nagoya, Japan. The venue of the symposium was at the
Environmental Studies Hall of Nagoya University. Symposium
participants came from China, Japan, Mongolia, South Korea,
Taiwan, and the Philippines.
Dr. Kazuhisa Nishihara, an official of IFSSO-Japan and
Coordinator of the International Symposium, delivered the
Opening Remarks. He explained that the focus of the
Symposium was on international and interdisciplinary studies
on ageing, agriculture, and multicultural situations.
Dr. Nestor Castro, IFSSO Secretary General, gave the
Opening Address. He talked about the objectives of IFSSO
and what it is currently doing especially in the Philippines where
the IFSSO Secretariat is currently based.
Prof. Teruyuki Komatsu, IFSSO President, read his Keynote
Second day of the IFSSO Symposium at Nagoya University Speech. He reiterated the relevance of conducting discussions
about the changing socio-cultural environment due to globalization.

Dr. Dundin Zaenuddin Appointed as IFSSO Focal Person for Indonesia
The International Federation of Social Science Organizations (IFSSO) appointed Dr. Dundin Zaenuddin as its Focal Point
Person for Indonesia last November 26, 2010. Dr. Dundin is currently the Director of the Research Center for Regional Resources
(PSDR) of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). He replaced Dr. Yekti Maunati as the Director of the said office.
Dr. Dundin has a Master’s degree in Sociology from Flinders University, Australia and a Doctorate in West Asia Regional
Studies from the University of Indonesia. LIPI is a full member organization of IFSSO.
Preparations for 2011 IFSSO General Conference Now on Full Swing
The International Federation of Social Science Organizations (IFSSO) is on its full swing in undertaking the necessary
preparations for the 20th General Conference, which will be held in Batangas City, Philippines on April 18-20, 2011. The
theme of the Conference is “Social Science Perspectives on Human Security.”
IFSSO has officially released its Call for Papers for the Conference. It is welcoming individual paper presentations as well
as organized panels with three to four speakers per panel. The IFSSO Secretariat encouraged the submission of proposed
papers that contribute to the debate on theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of Human Security. The
deadline for the submission of abstracts of papers is on May 31, 2011 while full papers are due on June 30, 2011. To date,
the IFSSO Secretariat has already accepted several paper propsals coming from Burkina Faso, Japan, the Philippines, Sri
Lanka, and Tanzania.
The Lyceum of the Philippines University, the host of this year’s IFSSO Conference, has organized the necessary committees
for the conference, namely:
