Period 9/10

OBJECTIVES:
• Perform 4 types of chemical reactions
• Identify some of the products of the reactions
• Write and balance the equations for the reactions observes

DATA TABLE:
Reactants Observation Products
Magnesium + A white light appeared 2MgO + Mg3N2
Nitrogen + Oxygen in the crucible, due to
the magnesium
reacting with the
nitrogen and the
oxygen from the heat
Mg3N2 + H2O The nitrogen and the 2NH3 + 3MgO
hydrogen bonded
making ammonia
CuCO3 + limewater The copper turned CO2 + CuO
black as it was being
indirectly heated and
reacting with the
limewater. The
limewater itself turned
foggy.
Zn + HClO When the hydrogen H2 + ZnCl2
gas was heated with a
lit match, the
Hydrogen gas reacted
by making a
“popping” noise
KI + Pb(NO3)2 As soon as the PbI2 + KNO3
phosphorus nitrate
was added to the
potassium iodide, the
reaction became a
think yellow
substance, used for
paint.

CONCLUSION:
1) Write a chemical equation for each of the reactions. Indicate the
type of chemical reaction for each one.
2) Which of the reactions in this experiment was exothermic and which
was endothermic? Provide evidence to support your conclusion?

3) How can you tell if a chemical reaction has occurred? What are
some distinctive changes that can be observed? How do these changes
differ from physical changes?

4) In Part A, step 4, were you able to detect the presence of ammonia

gas? If so, what does this result suggest?

FURTHER INVESTIGATION:
1) In Part C, the test for hydrogen was the sounds resulting when some
of the gas exploded. Do any other gases have this characteristic? If so,
name one.

2) What is meant by a reversible reaction? How do chemists indicate a

reversible reaction when writing a chemical equation?

3) Prepare a table of reaction types using table 8-2 as your guide. List
all 4 types of reactions, state the general form of each, and pick a
specific word reaction representing that type of reaction.

- TABLE ON THE NEXT PAGE

Type of Reaction General Form Example
Synthesis Reaction - E + E = CPD A. S+O2  SO2
-CPD + E = CPD D. N+H4 NH4
-CPD + CPD = CPD K. H2+ O  H2O

Single Replacement CPD + CPD = CPD F. Na + H2O  OH + H

Reaction H. Cu + AgNO3  Ag +
Cu(NO3)2
L. NaBr + Cl  NaCl + Br

Double Placement CPD + CPD = CPD B. MgCl2 + H2SO4  MgSO4

Reaction + HCl
E. HCl + NaOH  NaCl +
H2O
J. CaCl2 + AgNO3  AgCl +
Ca(NO3) 2
Decomposition -CPD = E + CPD C. CaCo3  CaO + CO2
reaction -CPD = E + E G. PbO Pb + O
I. 2KClO3  2KCl + 3O2
