Adding Connections

Connections can be modelled velY quickly with mucros. The greatest benefits when you work with mucros are:

• The mucro settings can be saved under a certain name at any time. These settings can

.' then be used for all projects.

5' When you modi Iy sections in the model, all mucros arc automatically modified at the same time.

• lfyou select options such as edit, copy, or mirror, all connections are automatically included. The connections that are copied or mirrored are then 'exactly the same as the originals. The same applies to plates and bolts.

Macros reside Oil the bottom of the Xstcel screen, By clicking 011

the user can switch between the various sides. Xstcel has a macro for 1110st connections.

The macros are divided into 21arge grollps:joi1ziS that-connect two or more beams and details that includes ouly one beam. With the first group the macro asks tlte user for selection of2 sections - sequence of clicking of sections (first the main part and then the secondary part). In the case of macros that work with more than two beams, you can conclude the selection of a beam with the middle mouse key.

In the case of the second group of macros (= detnils) Xsteel asks tile user lor a section (e.g. a column) ano [or a point for the detail (e.g. a sole plate). This point is the point that lies on the

under side of the column. .

When a connection has been made successfully the symbol will be green. When a connection has failed the symbol is red. If the symbol appears yellow there may be some problem associated with the connection. You should examine a C<.1I1l1qctiOIl with a yellow symbol closely to determine the problem. Most of the time [I yellow symbol will be associated with either bolts or holes that have an edge distance less than that 'of 11m connection default value. The most common reason fur gelling a red symbol or afailed connection is because ofthe . "updirection" is inappropriate for connection that has been made. ln most cases the auto choice can take care or the up direction but in unci ear cases it has to be defined manually. Up direction is indicated by the direction of the arrow in the joint symbol. The~lser can find the correct up direction for the connection by opening the Ilelp file for the macro that was used. The normal up direction is shown on the Picture tab of the macro. The direction can be changed by selecting the symbol in the model and then all the General tab of the macro change the x y or z direction and click Modify.

The up directiol~ of the macro is of critical importance!

Willi the settings of bolt groups and elongated holes, Xsteel asks for the bolt distances in the horizontal and vertical directions. For macros the convention is that the direction ol'the arrow is the vcrticnl dircction.
