1. Introduction

Parents and teachers share a common treasure—the student. It is as if they are partners in

joint ownership of a valuable corporation. The child they share represents the

corporation. If they are to nurture this corporation and ensure its success, they must be

intentional about establishing good communication. To develop the communication that

will allow parents and teachers to make plans, set goals, solve problems, and establish the

relationship that they need in order to have a good partnership, a Parent-Teacher Meeting

is required.

A parent teacher conference helps to communicate to parents the areas their children are

excelling in and to give them specific ideas of how to improve upon their child’s

performance. Parent-Teacher meeting should be used as a platform to make a lasting

bond with the parent to increase the likelihood of academic success for their child.

Keeping this goal in mind, a Parent-Teacher Meeting was organized in the School of

Computer Science on 25th August, 2007. To organize the meeting joint efforts were made

by all the faculty members of School of Computer Science. Two meetings of teachers

were organized. In the first meeting a committee was formed under the chairmanship of

Dr. Priyesh Kanungo. All the faculty members were allotted different responsibilities. In

the second meeting a mock-up of meeting was decided. The points to be discussed with

parents were decided after a brain-storming session in the meeting.

3
A kit was prepared which included an information brochure, a pen and a writing pad to
write suggestions on Parent-Teacher Meeting. Also a feedback form was designed in
order to take feedback of parents on the teaching-learning process in SCS.

2. Program at a glance

2.1 Inauguration

A documentary movie “MISSION OF SCS ” focusing on mission and vision of School of

Computer Science together with a glimpse of SCS was presented with the aim to bring

the parents and teachers to a common platform of thoughts and expression. The program

was formally inaugurated by Dr. A.K. Ramani, Dr. Sanjay Tanwani and Mrs. V.K. Jain

by lightening the lamp before Goddess Saraswati followed by Saraswati Vandana.

2.2 Cultural Programs

Students of School of Computer Science had shown their talent in extra-curricular

activities by presenting few cultural programs. The programs presented were dance (a

fusion of classical and folk dance), Drama, Poem and group song. Parents enjoyed the

program very much. They highly appreciated the quality of programs.

2.3 Elaboration of objectives of Parents-Teachers’ Meeting by Dr. Priyesh Kanungo

Dr. Kanungo explained the objectives of PTM. He said that the meeting is being

organized to familiarize the parents with the department where their ward is studying and

meet the teachers who are teaching their ward. He added that the department wants to

take the feedback from parents on the teaching-learning process in School of Computer

Science and improve accordingly.

7
Dr. Kanungo proposed ten points to be discussed in the panel discussion. They are:

1. Expectations from the school.

2. Expectations from parents.

3. Teaching/Learning experience.

4. Course curriculum & infrastructure

5. Development of professionalism.

6. Additional efforts for weak students.

7. Personal problems of students.

8. Industry Exposure.

9. Change observed in your ward in School of Computer Science

10. Students’ life at home/hostel.

Introduction of Faculty members of School of Computer Science by Dr. Priyesh

Kanungo

Dr. Kanungo introduced all the faculty members of School of Computer Science to

the parents.

2.4 Elaboration of objectives of School of Computer Science by Dr. A.K. Ramani

Dr. Ramani explained the mission, vision and objectives of School of Computer Science.

He explained that institute works with a focus to produce highly confident and self-

learner professionals, who can take-up various challenges of computer science and IT.

For the same it is important to have good teaching-learning.

8
He proposed three ways to improve teaching-learning:

1. Interaction with parents and taking feedback from them.

2. Interaction with industry and taking feedback from them.

3. Self-Assessment of teaching-learning.

For better interaction of faculty and students the department is planning open house

for direct communication between students and teachers. Teachers’ feedback system

is being implemented in SCS. This is one of the best practices and is implemented to

improve Teaching-Learning process in the department.

Student kits (which include hour-wise course-plan, scheduling of assessment tasks

and list of assignments), detailed course-plan of all the subjects being offered, best

project reports of students, and assessment files of faculty members were shown to

parents. Parents also visited labs. Students of School of Computer Science arranged a

Road-Show which was intended to show the working of projects done by them.

Parents were very keen to see the projects done by the students (their wards). After

looking at the running projects of students, the parents were highly satisfied.

Dr. Ramani assured that SCS will always stand rock-solid for the betterment of the

students. It was proposed that PTM shall be organized every year on last Saturday of

August.

9
3. Panel Discussion

The meeting was intended to have involvement of parents along with the teachers in the

education of students. There was a panel discussion on the points proposed by Dr.

Kanungo earlier. The panel consisted of eight members- four teachers and four

representatives from parents. The discussion started with the introduction of panel

members and their views on PTM. Parents appreciated the initiative being taken for

organizing PTM at this level. Parents also suggested that PTM should be organized twice

a year. Various Problems were raised by the parents. They are:

1. Less placement opportunities for M.Sc(CS/IT) and MBA(CM) students

2. Non-availability of clean drinking water.

3. College timing is long but no facility for nutritious food. A better

canteen may be opened for the students where clean and healthy food

may be availed to the students.

4. Bus facility is not available, as a result parents feel insecure. The

department may run a bus on cooperative basis that is parents shall also

cooperate by paying some fees for availing bus facility.

 The teachers explained various measures that are taken for better placement.

1. Communication skills and spoken English classes are arranged regularly

for overall personality development of students.

2. The department helps the students in their placement even after the

completion of their degree.

 They also explained the problem that department faces in placement activity.

10
1. Most of the students come from rural background. They face problems

in communication and they lack professionalism.

2. The students take admission in PG courses but still their mindset is not

as of a PG student. The lack virtue of self learning. They do not believe

in self-learning and teachers have found many times the students copy

assignments from others. This is one of the biggest hurdle in the path of

their progress.

3. The students consider themselves as college students and not IT

professionals. Thus do not work with a sense of commitment and study

with the aim to anyhow complete the course and hope to get good

placement.

4. The department faces competition from other departments of the

University.

 Dr. Ramani assured parents about availability of clean drinking water. He said

that the department will try its best to solve all the problems raised by the

parents.

 Parents also gave suggestions for improvement of department

1. Entrepreneurship programs for students should be started after

completion of their degree.

2. Feedback of students should be given directly to the parents through

email and mobile.

3. Personal attention should be given to weak students.

11
4. Feedback from Parents

The main objective of organizing Parents-Teacher Meeting was the interaction of parents

with faculty members of School of Computer Science, familiarize them with the best

practices followed at School of Computer Science and take their feedback on education

and facilities available at School of Computer Science. Parents of fifty eight students
