Notes on Tuition Fees for Postgraduate Students following Taught and

Research Masters Programmes

General
1. The 2011-2012 fee rates apply to all students who commence a new year or other period of study on
or after 1 August 2011. Fees are subject to annual revision and are due in full at registration. The
payment of fees is the responsibility of the student and, in the event of a student’s sponsoring authority
(if any) failing to make payment, the student will be held personally liable for payment. Annual
programme and course fees cover matriculation, tuition and one diet of examination. They include an
element in respect of membership of University unions, sports facilities, and other student facilities and
amenities. Matriculated students who are not required to pay an annual programme or course fee
should contact the Students’ Association about associate membership.

2. Students are advised that they should be certain of their fee status before accepting an offer of
admission. Further information and advice on fee status is available at www.ed.ac.uk/student-
funding/fee-status

3. Information on tuition fee discounts can be found at: www.ed.ac.uk/student-funding/fees. These are
the Graduate Discount Scheme which is available to alumni who have graduated with an undergraduate
degree from the University of Edinburgh, and the Alumni (Visiting Undergraduate) Discount Scheme
which is available to students who have previously matriculated on a "Visiting Programme" as a non-
graduating undergraduate student and completed a minimum of one semester of study at the University
of Edinburgh.

4. Annual additional programme costs may also be payable by postgraduate students as notified in
their formal Letter of Admission. Rates vary according to the field of study. Please contact the
appropriate College Postgraduate Office for further information.

5. No fees are payable in respect of periods of authorised interruption of studies of over 3 months
duration.

6. A fee of £40 is payable prior to first graduation for registration as a member of the General Council.

7. In terms of Resolution of the University Court no. 7/1982, students in debt to the University may not
be permitted to re-matriculate in future sessions, nor to graduate, if eligible to do so until the outstanding
sum has been cleared. The University’s Collection Policy for Student Fees and Related Charges can be
found at http://www.finance.ed.ac.uk/student/tuitionfees/

8. Withdrawal from the University: Students who withdraw before 31 January will be liable for 60% of
the annual tuition fees. If a student withdraws after this date, he/she will be liable for payment of the full
session fees for the programme of studies and will not be entitled to a refund. At the discretion of the
University, a full refund of tuition fees may be made to students who withdraw from a programme with
appropriate academic approval within the first couple of weeks of starting their studies.
Annual Fees

students who are admitted to these masters programmes but exit with an award of Diploma are liable for
the appropriate full-time annual fee.

time annual fees. Full-time students who are admitted to these awards but exit with an award of
