The differing opinions which have been voiced concerning!
•p
the Resident Assistant selection process all have validjj
premises and should all be addressed. In two separate letters
appearing last week and today in the "Your Opinion" section
of the Merciad, the selection/interview process is both
criticized and lauded.
It should first be pointed out that the actual selection
method contains three steps: 1) the student must evaluate him
or her self through a short essay stating why he or she would
like to become an R.A.; 2) three evaluation forms must be
completed by persons of the applicants' choice concerning the
lifestyle, maturity, and responsibility-level of the applicant;
and 3) an interview process takes place with the director of
housing and the senior R.A.'s featuring the role-playing of
1
actual situations which might occur in a dorm setting."
The first letter to the editor stated that part three of the
selection method is belittling, causing embarrassment of the
applicant in front of his or her peers.
The second letter addressed t he practical reasons for such a
stringent interview and jrole-playing session. And those
arguments make a great deal of sense. If the R.A.-to-be can-
not handle problemsjarising in an interview, how canThe or
she successfully control a similar, situation .in real-life? ..
Yes, the process may seem humiliating - but it is better that
the initial humiliation be done behind closed doors and not in
the presence of students who are supposed to respect the R.A.
and count on him or her for guidance. |f £
The campus living facet of college life is one of the most
vital experiences molding-students. For freshmen^ especially,
the R.A. plays a large part in making that first year away
from home a good one. * Union director;* Dave Robinson,
