An Executive Summary
Introduction: Till 1197, when India’s last University of that era was burnt out1, Indian society
was highly innovative in both applied & social sciences and arts. Thus India had products,
which were used all over the world, known at that time. Students from all over the world
came to study at Indian Universities and Indian secular and religious thinking influenced the
world.
However when we did not set up any new University for 650 years and when the traditional
village Pathsahala system fell into disuse, a large part of our population became illiterate.
During 1850s, after the East India Company was able to establish itself, a new educational
system for India was planned by the then rulers and in 1857, three Universities at Calcutta,
Bombay (Mumbai) and Madras (Chennai) were set up.
After independence, the University and the School system, with some modifications, was
made available all over the country. But this system continued to operate with shoe-string
budgets and without much of an inter-action with the society. Our university system has not
been able to nurture the creative abilities of the young and has not been an agent for
innovation. In addition to the traditional system, a number of new modern institutions were
set up by the central government. These institutions have been well-funded. But India’s
share in innovation in either products or thought-processes continues to be negligible, by all
metrics, used for measuring innovation. GTU is setting up the Innovation Council to help the
GTU community make its ‘due’ contribution towards making the world a better place
through innovation.
GTU innovation Council: While the first objective of the Council is to nurture creativity and
innovation within the University community, it is designed to act as a catalyst of change for
the whole of the society. The Council will send out its students and teachers to businesses,
industries and various organizations to continuously prepare projects and case studies for
changes, which may lead to improvement in products or processes. When 400,000 students

and 27,000 teachers (our likely numbers in 2013-14) start working as a force for innovation,
we expect that the education and research at the University will be rejuvenated through
anchoring it with the real-life problems in businesses, industries and the society. More
importantly it will make our SMEs, and our society more innovative.
Innovation through a new model of Collaboration: India had missed the industrial
revolutions of the nineteenth century and early part of twentieth century. Our industries
had not benefited from research at Universities and the two have not yet been able to come
together in any meaningful way, in spite of all the efforts during the last 63 years.
Innovation cannot occur at industries, which have no active inter-action with Universities.
Innovation at Universities, where the learners & researchers and laboratories & workshops
have no contact with the real world is very difficult. The Soviet Russian experiment has
proved that research laboratories, without an active relationship with Universities, may not
be as innovative as expected.
To establish a close and continuing inter-action between the industries & businesses and the
students & faculties in all the undergraduate and postgraduate courses like Engineering,
Management, pharmacy, MCA and Polytechnics and the faculty members in GTU, GTU, with
the help of TechPedia, has designed a joint action plan for creation of 25 communities from
the 166 industry clusters and 500 colleges of GTU. Each community will be managed by a
GTU Innovation Sankul Committee. The capacity of each Sankul will be built by involving
faculty members, professionals, students and owners & professionals of industries and
businesses. During the summer, thousands of students and faculty members will work
jointly with industries to determine the Industry Defined Problems (IDP). These may relate
to improving the quality of the products. Or these may be for solving some problems,
relating to the processes at the industries. At the beginning of the academic year, the
output from the students will be evaluated and it will be uploaded on the TechPedia.
GTU Innovation Sankuls will cut through the inertia of non-contact and will develop a new
model of Industry-Institute Collaboration, based on innovation at the grass roots level.
When in three years, every one of its more than 100,000 final year students and more than
20,000 faculty members are out in the field with the requirement that an innovative Final
Year project is to be completed and put on the TechPedia, when there will be no way to
hide the work, when good work will be awarded year after year, when thousands of small
and big industries get the opportunity of thinking, jointly with young minds and faculty
members about continuous improvements in their products & processes and when the law
students work to make patent process and IPR processes easy, an entirely new environment
of innovations will be created.
To identify and to help solve the problems of the industries (45,000 MSMEs of
Gujarat as well as the larger industries) through regular consulting cells at 500
colleges of GTU.
To help industry associations work better through students efforts.( ASSOCHAM has
presented this module to Finance Minister of India in its Annual General Meeting in
December 2010 and has proposed that it would contribute towards mapping the
IDPs in a big way.)
To help develop a relationship between GTU and industries for keeping the
employees of the industry more up-to-date through specially designed educational
programs (User Defined Education ecosystem).
To have summer internships in the industries. (The students will spend significant
amount of time in academic curriculum in mapping real floor issues)
To have engineers from the industry to regularly give seminars and inter-act with the
students. (A new trend of practical learning environment will be stimulated to
manifold the efficiency of the knowledge ecosystem.) and to work out exchange of
teachers and professionals from the industry to impart quality educations in even
the Rurban areas of state.
To map every SME with the corresponding GTU institutions, with which the SME can
inter-act to mutual advantage. To bring every one of the ASSOCHAM’s and other
chamber’s 200,000 members in touch with the corresponding GTU institutions, with
which the member may be able to inter-act to mutual advantage.( In 83 industrial
clusters for different vertical industry groups )
Management Architecture: The GTU Innovation Council: chaired by the Vice Chancellor. The
Council committee (CC) will include Professor Anil Gupta, Techpedia, Chairs of State level
Chambers and Vertical-associations, ASSOCHAM,GCCI and other associations, government
officers, Registrar of GTU and others.
Five Regional Committees: managed jointly by two co-chairs; –one would be a Director/
Dean and the other would be a prominent person from the industry; the Managing
Committee (MC) to consist of representatives from the Sankuls, associated with it.
Every one of the 25 Innovation Sankuls: managed by two Co-Chairmen: one from a GTU
College and the other from the industry, a Secretary and a Joint Secretary: an industry
engineer and a student; the Sankul Committee (SC) with representations from Colleges,
District Industry Officers, industries and prominent citizens.
An Udisha Executive Committee (EC) at each GTU College: will co-ordinate with its Sankul.
Excellent projects of students, faculties and colleges in all will be awarded jointly with
Techpedia and GTU at State level.( For the best projects in each field/For the best Mentor in
each field/For the best Sankul/For the industrialist, who contributes best towards industry-
institute inter-action/For the Principal/ Director, who contributes best towards industry-
institute inter-action/For the professional (Government Officer or Industry Officer), who
contributes best towards industry-institute inter-action/For the Professor, who contributes
best towards industry-institute inter-action).
The above will trigger a “Feel the difference” initiatives for teachers, students and others.
Inspiration driven knowledge based innovation ecosystem is key among the targets.
GTU wants every final year project to solve some real problem of businesses & industries or
of the society. To achieve the objective, during summer, at the end of the pre-Final year,
students will visit some industry and work out 3-4 problems, with the following output:
The College will upload the problems in www.techpedia.in The project will be
executed by the students during both the semesters of the Final Year. The faculty
will try to understand whether there is a knowledge gap or technology gap or skill
gap and to document it
Some student or some students, under the guidance of their faculty members may select
the project/ research problem, without a reference to an industry. Such problems will be
called User Defined Problems (UDPs). The Consortium of GTU and Techpedia will attempt to
find mentors from industries or research institutions both for IDPs and UDPs by using web
based National mentoring network (NMN), which is an open source environment for
strengthening the knowledge ecosystem breaking the barrier of space and time.
More than 50% of the students in GTU Colleges are from families, which are sending their
first member for a University level education. GTU has nearly 30% Colleges in small towns
and rural areas. Hence innovation at GTU will be an inclusive process and it will encourage
progress at BOP level.
GTU and Techpedia has conducted during the last four months successful experiments to
prove the viability of the project. GTU students have successfully cracked a number of
Industry Defined Projects (IDPs) posed by various MSMEs, bigger Industries and even by
grass root NGOs. A few students have converted their projects work to new enterprise
modules during the last few months and they are scaling up towards the effort in socializing
technologies. To execute the entire algorithm, Techpedia team has started visiting the GTU
colleges to interact its pre final and final year students and faculties guiding them.
Techpedia found out from initial GTU college survey that nearly 25% more students will
finish their prototypes within UG if they can be provided some resources. A virtual
incubation cell at GTU can play a vital role in nurturing the budding techno- entrepreneurs
of the technical domain even at the UG level.
CONTENTS
1.0 Introduction:
Today the University has 495 Colleges. More than 90% of seats in the technology fields in
the state are with GTU (Appendix 1) and the share of all the other Universities, taken
together is less than 8%. Moreover since every year, the number of seats is increasing in
self-financed institutions only, the foot-print of GTU is expected to become larger. Therefore
the quality of learning outcomes and the quality of research work at GTU will largely
determine the health of education in this state in these disciplines. The conventional
universities and educational systems in our country have not been able to ignite the
inherent creativity and innovation of our young men and women. GTU is determined to
ensure that the spirit of innovation is fostered and encouraged in every possible way so that
the creativity of our young is able to contribute to building the world of tomorrow.
During the last few months, through a small successful experiment, GTU’s under-graduates
have proved that they can innovate in a creditable way. (Section 2.0 and Appendix 2) GTU,
therefore, has decided to scale up the experiment by setting up the GTU Innovation Council.
This platform will explore opportunities to improve access, affordability, sustainability,
efficiency, productivity and competitiveness in the needy domain of socio-technical
applications and key focus on BOP. This will foster an innovation eco-system across domains
and sectors to strengthen entrepreneurship modules even among students. To ensure
sustainability, durability and quality and to expand the space for dialogue and discourse on
innovation GTU have already started taking initiatives.
1.1 Objectives:
• To involve the entire society, along with the students and faculty members, in an
innovation campaign
• To create a management system, which uses the existing structures and facilities by
bringing them together for working for innovation
• To document every single success and to make the information available to all the
stake-holders to develop self-confidence in the whole of the system
• To develop inter-relationship for national and international collaborations for
innovation in the fields of Science, Engineering, Technology and Management.”
• To establish close linkages with industries and businesses to make research and
development at the University relevant to the needs of industries at national and
international levels.
Mr Hiranmay Mahanta, managing director of Techpedia.in visited many GTU Colleges and
presented some problems, posed by some industries, most of them SMEs. To the great
credit of the creativity of our students, these Industry Defined Problems (IDP) were solved
by our students, well within the time limits, prescribed by the industry (Appendix 2). Thus an
IDP, given by L&T was solved by an undergraduate student of a GTU College within 5 weeks,
whereas L&T had estimated that the problem would take about 4 months.
GTU proposes to create the necessary space and an eco system for innovation through the
GTU Innovation Council. The Council will architect an eco system, which would work on the
basis of both confidence in the ability of the young and the availability of the facility of
mentoring to every project, be it industry defined or student-defined. Innovation is
universal. But it is nurtured and permitted to grow in a local context. So GTU proposes to
use its Innovation Council to bring the processes of innovation closer to businesses,
industries and local institutions. To take up the challenges of innovation, the processes have
to be nimble enough that it is able to take up the smallest task with excellence. The
centralized structure along with the decentralized clusters will help achieve the right
balance.
To have a close inter-action of GTU’s students and the industries & businesses, GTU has
created a new model, consisting of three different but inter-connected entities.
The first is an Udisha club, created at every College. The Club works to obtain student
internships at industries and businesses (I & B) and to arrange regular lectures by
professionals from I & B. In addition it challenges the creativity of young persons by asking
GTU students to help I & B by attempting to improve their products or processes. An Udisha
club is chaired by the Principal and consists of some of the faculty members and students of
the College.
In different areas of Gujarat, GTU is establishing 25 GTU Innovation Sankuls. The Sankuls are
designed to link 495 colleges ( engineering, polytechnics, pharma, MBA, MCA etc.) with 166
industry clusters (MSMEs) in collaboration with Techpedia.in, to create innovation zones
which will create a platform where industries can pose real life problems which would then
be solved by students as a part of their academic course. This will enrich the learning
process of students, inculcate entrepreneurship and provide industry with solutions to their
problems. An experimental study of this process was carried out by GTU along with
Techpedia.in in 2010 and it was observed that such a platform often brought forth low cost,
innovative solutions. A sample of the results are given in Appendix 2.

The Proposal for GTU INNOVATION COUNCIL
Each Sankul Committee is co-chaired by the Principal of a College and a leader from I & B. Its
other members will be all the other Principals from all the GTU Colleges/ campuses and
some of the prominent persons from industries and businesses of the area. A Sankul
Committee will work with the Udisha Clubs in its area to provide to every student some
experience at I & B. GTU expects that with excellent teaching in the Colleges and with a
close inter-action with I & B, its graduates will be well-prepared to work in the real world.
The GTU Innovation Council will work with the 25 Sankuls to make our Colleges as well as
the industries and businesses more innovative. GTU Innovation Council will have Sectoral
Advisory Council, consisting of vertical nation-wide or Gujarat-wide associations in the fields
of engineering, pharmacy, computer science or business studies.
Besides Sectoral Advisory Council, GTU Innovation Council has three GTU Skills Councils to
act as a bridge between the service industry and GTU and to enhance professionalism in
their respective fields. The three Councils are:
Phase I of the project involves 37000 graduate and 1900 post graduate engineers, 41,800
Diploma engineers, 6800 B. Pharma, 1900 M. Pharma, 12000 MBA graduates and 4900 MCA
graduates. Each GTU innovation Sankul will on an average involve 5000 students from 11
engg., 12 MBA, 5 Pharmacy, and 8 MCA colleges working with 3000 SMEs for a year.
Techpedia.in will provide an online real time platform where database of Industry Defined
Problems, past projects and current work in progress will be maintained. The platform will
help students select projects from the IDP database, review past progress on the problem
by other students and progress ahead from that point. The innovation ecosystem is
deploying a relay model to avoid ‘reinventing the wheel’ problem and encourage original
work. Local customization of previous solutions along with new solution will be encouraged.
The best solutions will be nurtured for techno-entrepreneurship modules for wider socio-
technical needs.
To create a progressive knowledge ecosystem, Industrial Shodh Yatras are being organised
involving 1 lac technical youth and 10,000 faculties to map four aspects of technology, in use
at MSME clusters and in the neighbouring rural and urban communities. The first aspect is
benchmarking the current level of energy, material and technology youths in the enterprise.
To identify any innovation that the MSME unit may have tried is the second aspect. A set of
well-defined problems, which may be solved by the students jointly with the faculty may be
the third output. These problems may be taken up by students as their final year project or
as a challenge project. The last i.e. the fourth is to identify the policy bottlenecks which are
coming in the way of realizing fully the entrepreneurial potential. GTU has successfully
organized four industrial Shodh Yatras in different industrial estates in the state. Before the
end of this academic year, all institutes associated with GTU will kick start the process. Many
success stories have been created in linking the socio-technical issues of MSMEs and tribal
areas in Gujarat like Dang. During the very first Shodh Yatra, it was discovered that the
research work of a GTU faculty, done in the laboratories of an educational institute, could
satisfy the need of an SME unit. This has initiated the process of technology transfer. The
Shodh Yatras have brought the floor people of industries in touch with the faculty and
students. This may bring the professionals from the industries to the class rooms and may
pull faculty members into a closer embrace with the industries. Many UG Students’ instant
solutions to MSMEs during Shodh Yatras have started energizing the industry-institute
collaboration.
The respective Udisha clubs of GTU colleges connect with clusters of MSMEs in the
neighbourhood during the Industrial Shodh Yatras. The first Industrial Sodhyatra by GTU and
Techpedia was at Naroda Industries Association (NIA), Ahmedabad. Vishwakarma
Government Engineering College. Chandkheda, Gandhinagar sent 30 teams along with a
guide in each team to work with MSMEs. A Brief Training Session for students on Scouting
and Documentation was conducted by Hiranmay Mahanta, Prof M.G.Desai and Mr Ajay
Patel (from Industries) at NIA. The Industrial Shodhyatra was guided by Professors and SME
technocrats. It provided a real-life floor exposure of MSME issues to the students. On the
Spot Suggestions by students in improving product, process and suggestions for use of
innovative interdisciplinary strategies was well appreciated by the MSMEs. Students and
faculties had carefully focused on Documentation/mapping of IDPs (Industry Defined
Projects) from the shop-floors of MSMEs. The waste was defined as follows: “ Waste is that
whose optimum usability is yet to be found”. Students, faculties, floor persons and
technocrats brainstormed about efficient waste management processes. This exercise was
found quite effective when some research work done by Prof M.G Desai in waste
management of rerolling mills was well appreciated by rerolling mill SMEs in NIA MSME
clusters. The Shodh Yatra ended with a very positive Faculty-Industrialist interaction.
GTU innovation council believes even if only a few technology transfers happens from
academia to MSMEs via these Shodh Yatras and even if 1% of the research projects based
on industry needs turn out to be a success, then also GTU students would have delivered a
few hundred innovative technical solutions to MSMEs of the country. After the first Shodh
Yatra, it has been scaled in every week end involving both professors and students at
various innovation Sankuls like Rajkot, Boroda,Vatva, Naroda MSME clusters. The exercise
has got wider appreciation from both academia and industrial domain. GTU’s all 500 udisha
clubs will scale this exercise during weekends for the next two months. Major industrial
Shodh Yatras will be arranged during summer when each student will be assigned to map a
particular MSME in a specific Innovation Sankul. The industrial needs which are going to be
mapped as IDPs (Industry Defined Projects) will be converted to final year projects during
the academic year 2011-2012 at GTU’s 495 colleges. This will certainly increase the
efficiency of knowledge ecosystem via a need based evolution approach.
The initial work of establishing the GTU Innovation Sankuls has started cutting through the
inertia of non-contact and is developing a new model of industry-institute Collaboration,
based on innovation at the grass roots level. When in three years, every one of GTU’s more
than 100,000 final year students and more than 20,000 faculty members are out in the field
with the requirement that an innovative Final Year project is to be completed and put on
the Techpedia, when efforts of 15 million human months of work on the Final Year projects
are targeted to improve products and processes, when good work will be awarded year
after year, when thousands of small and big industries get the opportunity of thinking,
jointly with young minds and faculty members about continuous improvements in their
products & processes and when the law students work to make patent process and IPR
processes easy, an unprecedented and productive environment of innovations will be
created.
GTU offers Bachelor’s and Diploma Engineering programs in 32 disciplines each. Its Master’s
program in Engineering 22 different specialized areas. Its M. Pharma program has six
specializations. It has four different elective areas and five different sectoral areas in
Business Studies.
On March 12th, 2011, the University conducted the first entrance test for 711 applicants for
its Doctoral program. By April, we expect to admit our first set of doctoral students. By
academic year 2011-12, The University is expected to have about 39,000 Master’s and
Doctoral students.
GTU has set up the Board for Rurban Technologies, consisting of GTU Institutions in rural
areas and mofussil, towns. The Board has met twice: On 1st October 2010 and on 29th
November 2010. The Board has been working with Rural Business Hub Foundation
(http://www.internationalholisticaction.org/)and will try to work jointly with Grassroots
Innovations Augmentation Network (http://www.gian.org/).
GTU’s Board for Environmental and Green technologies had meetings on 22nd December
2010, 7th January 2011, 5th February 2011 and 16th February 2011. This GTU Board is
organizing four Workshops during the period up to August 2011:
GTU’s Board for Mobile Computing and Wireless systems is being set up.
GTU Center for nano Technology Applications has started working in January 2011.
GTU is offering a sectorial specialization in Retail Management in its MBA program. In 2009-
10, it was offered to 5,624 students at 83 colleges. GTU is planning to start a Center for
Retail Management at Gandhi Nagar.
GTU is working on offering an Aviation Engineering program at Indus with the help of a
University in USA.
GTU’s post-graduate students in M.E. Civil (Water Resources Management) program and
professors are doing creditable work in the area.
GTU has established a Center for Advanced Studies in Defense and Security at Vadodara.
GTU is expanding the space for innovation by involving its faculty and students in
continuous programs at its Colleges. Its web-site (http://www.gtu.ac.in) will show the
continuing programs of the following type:
3. Media: GTU website is daily followed by thousands of students and faculties. We also try
to use other media for an effective dissemination of innovative happenings at state and
national level.
4. Discussion (brainstorming) meetings on some issues of interest: Almost every day GTU is
having some such event in some of its colleges.
5. Debates: GTU colleges are encouraged to have techno-managerial debates. From the
next semester, in every program, one weekly hour is being set aside for discussing one
book, other than a text-book. Innovation can be one key agenda for such discussions.
6. Seminars: Every GTU college is usually having a seminar once a semester, having a wide
pool of audience who can be a part of discussion, development and discourse.
7. Conferences: Both inter and intra university conferences are regular events in GTU. The
context of innovation can start becoming an area of discussion at such conferences.
GTU has established an Innovation Council to scale up at all the GTU Colleges the successes
achieved by some under-graduate students at a few Engineering Colleges, with the help of
Techpedia (Please see section 2.0 and Appendix 2). The GTU Innovation Council will work
jointly with Techpedia and we propose that at the University level, the Council will have the
Managing Director of Techpedia.in as a member. The leaders of Sristi will also be invited to
join the Council.
When GTU wanted to base the Final Year projects on Industry Defined Problems, it was
found that SME were busy 24/7 for survival and had very little energy or space for
innovation. This was a situation, unlike the one in the developed world. In societies, which
have been more innovative, than our Society today is, even when an innovative project is
taken up by a larger organization, most of the innovations in processes and components are
usually done by SMEs, as partners of the big organizations. An organization can be
innovative only when it provides the space for innovation and when it has individuals and
partners, who have successfully tried innovations and who have the confidence and the
ability to attempt innovations. GTU proposes to move towards making its students and
teachers, laboratories and workshops, its class-rooms, open spaces and libraries centers for
creating an eco system of innovations by working jointly with businesses, industries and all
the other stake-holders. GTU has institutions in not only all the bigger cities, it has its
Colleges and Polytechnics in small towns and rural areas all over the state. Its students come
not only from the bigger cities, in fact a majority of its students are from the rurban India.
When GTU works jointly with all the businesses and industries and other research and
governmental institutions on innovative projects, it would create an eco-system of
innovation.
On its part, GTU proposes to create a complementary system by joining together its
Innovation Council and its academic systems. The system will challenge all the members of
the University community to participate in innovation by asking for innovative thinking and
by providing a flexible but structurally sound framework for innovation and by providing for
the necessary mentoring by marshalling all the resources of the University and the society.
• To inculcate among students and faculty a spirit of enquiry, confidence in their ability
and innovation
• To encourage the students to work with industries and businesses and R&D
institutions with the help of Techpedia
• To facilitate innovations by SMEs by value addition through support by GTU students
and faculties
• To create appropriate eco-systems and environment to foster innovation.
More than 50% of the students in GTU Colleges are from families, which are sending their
first member for a University level education. GTU has nearly 30% Colleges in small towns
and rural areas. Hence innovation at GTU will be an inclusive process in that it would be able
to inculcate a spirit of innovation to young men, who are unlike the PLUs in metropolitan
cities. The work of students and more than 10,000 faculty members at 495 Colleges with
SMEs will encourage progress at BOP level.
GTU will facilitate the creation of necessary eco-systems for innovation through:
• 25 Innovation clusters at sub-university level (to be called GTU Sankuls), with each
Sankul to have oorganizational autonomy & flexibility
• Intellectual Property/ Patents (in association with Law students and faculties of the
Law University at Gandhinagar)
• Web & ICT as tools. (GTU bagged the award for the best ICT enabled University of
the Year in e-India 2009)
Techpedia web-site is being used by our students and we have given cross-
references to Techpedia on the GTU site so that Techpedia has been co-opted by
GTU, as far as the project work is concerned.
• Incentives & Awards
• By helping MSMEs of the state to foster innovation by supporting their R&D via
thousands of GTU technical students and faculties every year to scout and sustain
Innovation happening on the shop-floors of MSMEs.
The issues involved in the Final Year project are of the same kind, that have not permitted
our businesses and industries to develop many new products or to improve the existing
products by using the proverbial ‘jugaad’ of our workers. The genius of ‘jugaad’ has been
essentially used for re-creating tools and fixtures and for making the machinery work
without bringing out many new products to the world’s markets. The issues are as follows:
• The abject weakness of the workshop and laboratory staff both in numbers,
quality and motivation;
Excellence in education in the field of Business Studies depends upon a continuous research
in the business environment in the local context as well as in the global context. Though our
country has many renowned institutions, which offer MBA or higher degrees, the system
suffers from deficiencies, including the following:
GTU has as many as 35 MBA Colleges in mofussil towns and rural areas. It has
convened special meetings of the Directors and trustees of these colleges on
October 1, 2010 and November 29, 2010. At the second meeting a forum called
Swa-Prabandhan has been set up, with six regional groups in Gujarat to study the
needs of these Rurban areas and to suggest changes, which have to be made in
the MBA program, applicable to all the 106 MBA Colleges affiliated with GTU.
Our management institutions have done a good job educating our MBA students
by using Harvard case studies as well as similar material from other good
sources. Our management and business schools have also conducted many good
studies about businesses in China, USA and a few other countries. However
Indian Universities must study the business environment from the Indian
perspective for all the 270 countries of the world. A study from the Indian
perspective may lead to a significantly different understanding as compared to a

study from the American or European or Chinese perspective. Such studies may
be valuable to Indian businesses. But these may also add value to the world’s
store-house of knowledge by providing a study from the Indian perspective to
the available studies from the American, European and the Chinese perspectives.
GTU has 106 Management Colleges and more than a 1,000 faculty members.
Many of the faculty members are interested in the global business environment.
So GTU is uniquely placed to conduct such studies and become a store-house of
information about the business environment in the 200 countries of the third
and the fourth world. GTU proposes to encourage its students and faculty
members to conduct such studies and it proposes to put such case studies on its
cloud, so that the work may be widely disseminated for obtaining feedback.
The issues involved in the MBA program are that most of the programs in their syllabus
content and in the way these are delivered do not inculcate and encourage the spirit of
creativity and innovation. GTU is attempting, through both the design of its new MBA
program (i) to create a syllabus, which has an intimate relationship with the local context,
while it is designed to prepare managers for the ‘flat’ world of today and (ii) to deliver the
program such that the native creativity and spirit of innovation of a student is sharpened
and the student starts feeling comfortable in using his own ideas, along with the ideas of
great management thinkers, for solving practical business problems. The objective is that a
GTU MBA should be able to face the uncertainties and challenges at his work place by
calling upon his native creativity and spirit of innovation.
GTU proposes to establish an Innovation Council to scale up at all the GTU Colleges the
successes achieved by some under-graduate students at a few Engineering Colleges, with
the help of Techpedia (Please see section 2.0 and Appendix 2). The GTU Innovation Council
will work jointly with Techpedia and we propose that at the University level, the Council will
have the Managing Director of Techpedia.in as a member. The leaders of Sristi will also be
invited to join the Council.
5.1 Searching for IDPs: When the issue of anchoring the Final Year projects on Industry
Defined Problems was discussed at GTU, it was found that SME were busy 24/7 for survival
and had very little energy or space for innovation. So most of the SMEs were unable to
define the problems. This general impression among the faculty at GTU was confirmed
when it was learnt that Techpedia also found that it took quite some time for SMEs to
define any problems, which they would like the engineering students to solve.
Solution: From 2011, during summer, pre-final year students –preferably in groups- will visit
some industry and work out 3-4 problems. The action plan will be as follows:
• Each group will define and parameterize each problem in a pre-defined format.
• The College will evaluate the above two outputs from each group at the
beginning of the 7th semester.
• The College will upload the problems to the University’s and Techpedia website.
Some students or some students, under the guidance of their faculty members may select
the project/ research problem, without a reference to an industry. Such problems will be
called User Defined Problems. (UDPs). The Council will attempt to find mentors from
industries or research institutions both for IDPs and UDPs.
5.2 Execution of the Projects: GTU wants every final year project to solve some real
problem of businesses & industries or of the society. GTU also wants to have a close inter-
action with businesses & industries or with the society by way of
5.3 GTU Innovation Sankuls: GTU will establish 25 Regional Clusters of educational
institutions and businesses and industries. GTU will try to involve all industry associations
and government departments, associated with industries (Appendix 4) with the project. GTU
has talked to Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industries (GCCI) and the local unit of
Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). GTU has also
established a contact with Gujarat Chemical Association and Vatva Industries Association.
Dr Rajesh Khajuria, Director of GTU-affiliated MBA College at Vadodara, has established an
active contact of GTU with Vadodara Chamber of Commerce & Industry (VCCI), Baroda IT
Association (BITA) and the Federation of Gujarat Industries (FGi). Shri Pravinbhai Maniar of
GTU-affiliated VVP Engineering College, Rajkot has connected GTU with Rajkot Engineering
Association (REI). With the help of Hiranmay Mahanta, Managing Director of Techpedia,
GTU has been able to establish a contact with Jamnagar Chamber of Commerce (JCCI), the
national president of ASSOCHAM, CII and FICCI. ASSOCHAM has decided at its AGM, held in
December 2010, to closely work with us in linking its 200,000 plus MSMEs to our academic
domain wherever there is a possibility. The SME problems of floor level will be addressed by
thousands of students of GTU to enable them to innovate and make it a sustainable
ecosystem .We have decided to classify different verticals of SME clusters and discrete
industries and to link them to respective engineering colleges and their subject experts.
Each such cluster will be called a ‘ GTU Sankul’. The objective of each GTU Sankul will be as
follows:
• To establish a close and continuing inter-action between the industry and GTU
• To be able to seek and get the help of industries in execution of the project by
way of
o Mentoring
• To identify and to help solve the problems of the industries through regular
consulting cells at institutes
• To have engineers from the industry to regularly give seminars and inter-act
with the students
• To map every SME with the corresponding GTU institutions, with which the SME
can inter-act to mutual advantage
• To map every GTU institution with the corresponding SMEs, with which the GTU
institution can inter-act to mutual advantage
• To bring every one of the ASSOCHAM’s 200,000 members in touch with the
corresponding GTU institutions, with which the member may be able to inter-act
to mutual advantage
5.4 Micro-venture Innovation Fund: GTU Innovation Council will look at both the IDPs and
the projects, presented by research units to select excellent projects and provide support as
follows:
• 1,000 excellent BE projects (GTU has 34,079 seats at first year of BE in 2010.) @
Rs15,000 per project on an average
• 1,000 excellent DipE projects (GTU has 41,565 seats at first year of DipEin 2010.)
@ Rs10,000 per project on an average
• 1,000 excellent Master’s projects (GTU has 1,206 seats at first year of ME in
2010 and 1,546 seats in MPharma) @ Rs25,000 per project on an average
This may help the students develop their projects to completion by creating a workable
design, closer to a product, than may be the case without the support.
5.5 Annual Awards: GTU Innovation Council will give the following awards:
• For the best projects in each of the 32 fields of DipEngg and 32 fields of BE, 31
fields of ME,B Pharma, M Pharma, MBA and MCA (Awards to students)
• For the best Mentor in each field (Awards to professionals working in industries):
64 awards
5.6 A New Model of Collaboration for Innovation: India had missed the industrial
revolutions of the nineteenth century and early part of twentieth century. Our industries
had not benefited from research at Universities and the two have not yet been come
together in any meaningful way.
Innovation cannot occur at industries, which have no active inter-action with Universities.
Innovation at Universities, where the learners & researchers and laboratories & workshops
have no contact with the real world is very difficult. The Soviet Russian experiment has
proved that research laboratories, without an active relationship with Universities may not
be as innovative as expected.
GTU Innovation Council along with its 25 Sankuls will cut through the inertia of non-contact
and will develop a new model of Industry-Institute Collaboration, based on innovation at the
grass roots level. When in three years, every one of its more than 100,000 final year
students and more than 20,000 faculty members are out in the field with the requirement
that an innovative Final Year project is to be completed and put on the Techpedia, when
there will be no way to hide the work, when good work will be awarded year after year and
when thousands of small and big industries get the opportunity of thinking, jointly with
young minds and faculty members about continuous improvements in their products and
when the law students work to make patent process and IPR processes easy, an entirely
new environment of innovations will be created.
GTU Innovation Council will start its working with establishing 25 Sankuls by working jointly
with industry associations, industries, government’s departments of industries, Techpedia
and GTU’s educational institutions. The capacity of each Sankul will be built by involving
faculty members, professionals, students and owners of industries and encouraging each
Sankul to develop a methodology of working, which inculcates innovation through joint
working. At the end of every year, the working will be modulated after a review of the work
during the year is done. This will lead to a cycle of capacity building and renewal during the
year.
During the summer thousands of students and faculty members will work jointly with
industries to determine the Industry Defined Problems (IDP). These may relate to improving
the quality of the products. Or these may be for solving some problems, relating to the
industries. At the beginning of the academic year, the output from the students will be
evaluated and it will be uploaded on the Techpedia.
The synopsis of the projects will be studied and the Micro-venture fund support will be
provided to the proposed projects, which are adjudged to be the best.
When the projects are being executed, the Councils will work to map as many of the
projects as possible with mentors from the industry and businesses.
The GTU Innovation Council will work with industries and businesses to assess the need for
Continuing Education areas. It will also work with the Alumni to assess if GTU could help the
alumni by providing to him the continuing education in the area, required by an alumni. The
Council will provide the necessary Continuing Education Programs.
At the end of the year, when the students have completed the projects and these have been
evaluated, the projects will be uploaded on Techpedia.
The Council will work with the industry and the students and their faculty to see if the
project could be converted into a product, which can be commercialized. If so, it will work
with the Law students for developing an appropriate Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
agreement and for filing patents, where required.
A) Young Technology Venture Funding System: This will help support conversion of students
ideas to prototypes/products
We are looking ahead at creating a micro innovation funding system to help the needy
students to develop their prototypes. (Hiranmay Mahanta, Managing Director of
Techpedia.in estimates that today more than 70% of UG thesis is not being converted to
prototypes/products.) GTU Innovation Council (GTU-IC) aims at improving this factor
significantly. Excellent projects of students will be given support. GTU-IC will encourage
students to develop prototypes into products. Students will be helped in developing
enterprise modules based upon innovative socio-technical solutions at BOP. Value addition
will be given stress for grass root Innovations. We are trying to transform the prevailing
environment into a system which harvests technology based entrepreneurship and
innovation. GTU-IC will help set up a transparent system for protection and transfer of IPR
of the innovators and contributors of the idea till it is transformed into a product even at the
BOP.
GTU would like to support the following:
o 1,000 excellent BE projects (GTU has 34,079 seats at first year of BE in 2010.) @
Rs15,000 per project on an average
o 1,000 excellent Dip. Eng. projects (GTU has 41,565 seats at first year of Dip Eng. in
2010.) @ Rs10,000 per project on an average
o 1,000 excellent Master’s projects (GTU has 1,206 seats at first year of ME in 2010
and 1,546 seats in MPharma) @ Rs25,000 per project on an average
Similar awards for Pharmacy (6 Branches), Computer Science and Business students (4
Electives) will be considered.

Many chambers and industrial bodies like ASSOCHAM, GCCI, GIDC and VCCI have agreed to
help initially to locate the IDPs (industry defined projects) and we need to channelize them
to technical students and faculties in real time manner. One has to make at least 2-3 visits
prior to each workshop to the 166 existing SME clusters in different verticals. The cost of
venue, two tea, snacks and lunch for about 100 participants, AV aids, exhibition material
(posters, CDs and notebooks and pen), TA, DA in some cases, honorarium to experts, report
preparation, editing, publication and circulation to the participants)

H) Coordinating the above process and contingency like the team of coordinators
and others who will be helping in segmental areas in different geographical locations: 50 lac
for 500 colleges in 25 Sankuls. We are aiming at Benchmarking, certification, codification
and replication for creating market and learning opportunities at every level. Periodic
interposes of communication with all academic and industry units, state government, other
state technical universities, colleges, industrial clusters and local communities to connect
them with students to keep them regularly in loop. Literatures and Documents printing and
periodically circulating and updating the literature.

INDUSTRY’S PROBLEMS
solved by
Student Mithilesh Patel, from GOVT. POLYTECHNIC, DAHOD has successfully designed a
module to Run IC engines (vehicular, agricultural pump, generator ext.) with mixed water
injection. Though being a student from Civil Engineering has successfully experimented in
his bike for approximately 800km in 4.5 month with his so called h2o kit. He claims specialty
/unique benefit of his innovation is in improving mileage from 10 to 100% and h.p. 5 to 10%,
remove co2 and hc exhaust 70% up. He suggests that his models will be suitable where it
can be used in any place like agricultural automobile, medical, welding, cooking, etc.
An industry defined project (IDP) posed on online platform techpedia.in by Royal Solar,
Rajkot has successfully done by a student of AITS, Rajkot which can be used in tribal
people’s domain due to its low cost. Similarly a team led by Malav Kansara, an UG student
from Mehshana has successfully attempted in solving “Photo sensor based Sun tracking
system for Solar Power Plants” a problem posed by L&T. The attempt is to sense the sun
position within 0.1 deg accuracy. For this, the control system designed will continuously
change the sensor position till maximum radiation is sensed. This sensor system then can be
interfaced with solar reflectors to point them towards the sun.

Appendix 2_page 2 of 4
A group of UG students of GTU including Mr Rashesh Dhave from AITS has cracked a
problem posed by again L&T on Infrared sensor based Vehicle Classification System for
wider applications. This project has successfully verified by a group of experts at SVNIT Surat
early this month. They have got wider applause to go for possible testing it in BRTS
application system in Ahmedabad in due course of improvements in precession. Similar
innovation modules have been nurtured in more than dozen places so that students can
develop new enterprise modules.
Hitesh Rana a final year student of Electronics and communication in ADIT, Karamsad has
put his hand on solving many real life socio technical issues and adding value to grass root
innovations. He has worked in areas like plough for farming on hilly regions, safety helmet
for 2 wheeler riders, portable helmets etc. This working process has taken a way ahead in
socializing our technologies that have remained unsolved since centuries in common man’s
life.
Appendix 2_page 3 of 4
Going way ahead a student of R. K. College of Engg. & Tech in GTU, Amit Siroya has applied
an innovative way to conserve energy. He has developed a linear motion system, using scrap
vehicle wipers and a timer linked arrangements. This system provides a way for addressing
the problem of dust cleaning on solar PV modules for solar street lights in remote places.
This increases the efficiency for this photovoltaic device in the longer run (an industry
problem posed by one solar industry at techpedia). Many Solar energy companies have
appreciated this innovative solution and a few of them are likely to use the solution in the
production environment. He has availed a great deal of mentoring support in furnishing his
idea via the mentors from online NMN (National Mentoring Network) of techpedia.in and
from other colleges of GTU.

Pharmaceutical project:
Evaluation of the CNS Activity of Ayurvedic Formulation “DHASARA” of Acorus calamus Root
in Mice and related work has been completed at S. J. Thakkar Pharmacy College, Rajkot.
Development and evaluation of Polyherbal formulation for Cancer and other need based
research are undergoing in the institute to deliver a solution by March 2011. The work is
being supervised by Dr. Manish A. Rachchh.
Other Developments:
In a few cases students have gone one step ahead in converting their UG projects for their
new techno entrepreneurship modules. A UG students from Surat has successfully created
innovative green lighting system as a pre final year project and has now successfully
converted it into a profitable techno-entrepreneurship module namely “Angadia
Enterprise”. The students have successfully used the lab infrastructures after college hours
and started their ventures right from the labs to a significant market presence now. These
students are yet to pass out from their UG courses. This is motivating a wider range of UG,
GTU students to think out of box now and link their ideas and innovative spirit to industrial
needs.
LET’S POOL OUR SPIRIT AND RESOURCES IN CONVERTING THE EXPERIMENT OF TODAY TO
BE THE HYPOTHESIS OF TOMORROW.

Appendix 3_page 1 of 3
BY
Every year approximately 6 lac students graduate out of technical colleges in India and as
per the norms set by AICTE, 1.25 lac projects prepared by the students and guided by the
faculty are submitted to the college authorities. It is sad but true that no one knows about
the fate of these projects and their usability in industries. As noted by former director
general of CSIR, Padmabhushan Dr R.A.Mashelkar on Techpedia recently that over 3 million
human months of our Yuvashakti are being spent on solving real life problems on college
campuses. For the first time, Techpedia has an access to the outcomes of this huge
endeavor. Techpedia believes in transforming ideas into products and products to techno-
entrepreneurship modules keeping IPR linked to the innovators.
If out of these 1.25 lac projects which are submitted every year, even 1000 (1%) have the
potential to be developed into commercial products or solutions that could provide
breakthroughs in the fields of Science and Technology, it could be a phenomenal success in
Appendix 3_page 2 of 3
itself. Techpedia is in the process of transforming the prevailing environment into a system
which harvests technology based entrepreneurship and innovation, and at the same having
a transparent system for protection and transfer of the due credentials to the innovators
and contributors of the idea till it is transformed into a product.
(http://www.techpedia.in/problem_search_details.php?problem_type=I) posed by
industries and management students address modules similar to developing ERPs to raise
the sick units of SMEs and others and new student developed Enterprises. An NMN
(National Mentoring Network) http://www.techpedia.in/nmn/ is being developed to guide
these students and faculties to address the industry projected problems/projects(IDPs)
consisting of retired scientists, policy makers, faculties and expert professionals from all
corners of industry and academics headed by Dr.R.A.Mashelkar.Muliple student and faculty
groups irrespective of time and space attempt these problems via the web and lead a relay
model in developing faster solutions saving the major R&D investments of many industries
as an open innovation virtual Lab.
Techpedia database has an exhaustive collection of more than 100,000 technical projects
but that accounts for only 4-5% of the total extractable data across all the technical colleges
in the country. By accumulating all these it is felt that one can provide a better interfacing
for the SMEs to get an idea of real research trend in the UG level even. The effective
solutions can be linked to corresponding SMEs keeping the IPR intact to the search students
and faculties.Techpedia is trying to develop smaller enterprise units based on technology
inputs in developing a wider knowledge society globally. The socio-technical problems of 50
most backward districts are being posed to these students to be taken up in July 2011 with
the hope that the problems that have remained unsolved for centuries could be cracked.
We are trying to create a collaborative culture and virtual knowledge network, by which
India can harness the full potential of young technological, legal and management minds in
an integrated approach.
Appendix 3_page 3 of 3
To execute the entire algorithm techpedia team has started visiting the GTU colleges to
interact its pre final and final year students and faculties guiding them. The following are
few of the notable outcomes found out soon after the 1st round of visits to some few dozen
colleges of GTU.The fact that has been found in this interaction with thousands of students
and faculties is that there can be a well trusted link possible between the MSME and
academia, specially GTU .Students have successfully attempted the Industry Defined Projects
(IDPs) posed by various MSMEs, Bigger Industries and even by Grass root Innovations. Few
students have converted their projects work to new enterprise modules in last few months
and they are really scaling up towards the effort in socializing technologies. If a little
resource could be provided to the students a handful of students can convert their
theoretical ideas to prototypes from where a better visibility of the innovation can be
created. Techpedia found out from initial GTU college survey that nearly 25% more students
will finish their prototypes within UG if they can be linked a very minimum resource. Highly
experienced faculties can explore in sharing their expertise beyond their own institutes to
link the needy students across the country via web based NMN which is an open source
environment in strengthening the knowledge ecosystem breaking the barrier of space and
time. A virtual incubation cell centralized at GTU can play a vital role in nurturing the
budding techno- entrepreneurs of the technical domain even in UG level.
Appendix 4_page 1 of 8

in business management (MBA). GTU has decided to make cluster of more than 2500
courses websites for various PG level courses to achieve the following objectives such as
organizing and sharing resources; providing effective ways to reach remote learners and
connect them in a virtual course; to appeal to students' visual and interactive learning
Appendix 4_page 4 of 8
modes; to help teach students real-world skills such as handling large volumes of
information, developing research skills, analyzing and evaluating information.
Such Learning Management Systems are today used in every University in the
developed countries. However in India, this may be the first large-scale use of
launching such a large number of courses website.
• GTU Wikis
GTU Wikis (“using collective intelligence for improving Learning Outcomes”). GTU
Wikis are intended to serve teachers of GTU consortium colleges (PPP colleges) to
achieve the following objectives:
• Enable group of teachers teaching the same subject in different institutes to
share their experience.
GTU has provided at six Colleges, rooms with 12-15 computers connected to a
central server, on which the entire video course-set of IIT Mumbai has been
mounted. Thus any student can take advantage of any of the lectures to supplement
his study in the class room. By the end of April 2011, we shall estimate the usage of
the facility to see whether our students find the facility to be useful.
• GTU Discussion Boards (“Exchanging Tips and Discussing Topics”)
Appendix 4_page 5 of 8
GTU Discussion Boards enable teachers, senior faculties and principals of GTU
affiliated colleges to interact with each other. GTU aims to achieve the following
objectives through discussion boards to get educational as well as administrative
inputs for decision making; to build relationship with institutes and among
institutes and to enable discussion and debate topics which will give each other tips
and ideas. The first four Discussions Boards for Principals/Directors of PG courses is
being launched.
Gujarat Technological University (GTU) enrols about 1.1 lacks students per year in
various courses from undergraduate level to postgraduate level. GTU Campus Connect
is the welcome website for students where they can simply register and post their
queries regarding grades, syllabus, previous papers and other exam related things.
GTU is making a huge and continuing effort, conducted through IIT Teachers, NITTTR,
Bhopal and local resources for faculty development. Thus its FDP program of 17-22Aug
2010 was probably the largest such programs, which updated 166 faculty members of
GTU affiliated colleges.
• Facilitation of Research:

doctoral theses work. For this purpose, it seeks the collaboration of the research
community of the whole of the world.
GTU also wants to encourage its colleges to develop ‘Scholar in Residence for A Week’
programs so that its faculty members and the students may learn about the
methodologies of rigorous research work. It also encourages every College to develop a
regular mentoring and feedback mechanism. The University has devised a common
framework for the program. GTU has programs of teaching relating to technology.
Hence industrial collaboration is very necessary. GTU and its teachers and students are
making a major effort for an effective participation of competent professionals from
industries in the academic processes of the University.
Through Techopedia and the Foundation for MSME Clusters’ program for development
of Human Resource for Medical Devices, GTU is attempting to bring industry-oriented
problems for the Final Year projects to its Diploma and Degree Engineering students.
For MBA students during the fourth semester’s Global Business Strategy studies, the
students are being encouraged to study and prepare their own case studies about some
aspect of a country’s business for about 100 different countries.
GTU is going to give, in September 2011, the best principal and the best faculty member
award to the teachers to recognize both excellent teaching and research.
The festival began on 26th October 2010 with Regional Football competitions at SPCE,
Visnagar & SIGMA, Vadodara. During the first year, 9 games have been included and the
festival will continue up to the last week of November 2010. More than 10,000 students and
775 teams are participating in the festival at 7 places across the state.
Appendix 4_page 7 of 8
The University has no DPI. An Ad-hoc board with Professor Chaitnaya Sanghvi as the
Convenor was formed to conduct the Festival this year.. The advice of DPIs of the other
Universities in Gujarat was sought and a program to use the strength of all its Colleges was
developed. No more than 20 Colleges out of 495 Colleges have a regular qualified sports
teacher. It was decided that the Principal of the host institute will work as the Organizing
Chairman and that the sports In-charge will be appointed as the Organizing Secretary for the
sports being conducted at a College.
It is proposed to take up 20 different games next year.
A new system of continuous meetings with faculty members of affiliated Colleges, both
senior faculty and new entrants to teaching, has been set up. Students, who have an
excellent academic record are continuously invited for discussions. The University officers
are continuously visiting Colleges to have meetings with teachers, students and their
parents and the Trustees. Regular meetings with Trustees, who have built the self-financed
institutions are being organized. Continuous efforts for inter-action with the government
officers, responsible for managing government’s engineering colleges and polytechnics are
being made.
This has resulted in a positive outlook, a hope for improvement in the system and a
confidence among the stake-holders. Thus the first conference, organized by GTU on
“Business Ethics for Global Success of Indian Businesses” jointly with a GTU Roundtable on
25th and 26th September proved to be a grand success, with widespread participation from
all over the country. Recently ISTAR, a GTU- affiliated College, organized a training
workshop, to which came 60 persons from IISc, Bangalore, IITs, NITs, BITS and many other
prestigious institutions to get training in NS 2. Three of the Summer Internship program
competitions, conducted by three of our MBA colleges, have attracted entries from MBA
Colleges all over India, including from Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, considered to
be the best management School in India.

GTU Sankuls:
To bring industries, businesses and GTU Colleges together, GTU is setting 25 Innovation
Sankuls, as a part of the GTU Innovation Council. Each Sankul will represent a cluster of GTU
Colleges and the industries in the area. Every College, affiliated to GTU, will be associated
with one of the Sankuls.
To take advantage of the Sankuls and to organize other placement activities at each College,
every GTU college is setting up a Club. The Club may be called the Udisha1 (Universal
Development of Integrated Skills through Higher Education) Club of the College.
• The Executive Committee will have some faculty and students of various branches as
members. One of the faculty members will act as its coordinator.
• Faculty Members: As far as possible, each Branch has one faculty member in the
Executive Committee.
• Student Members: As far as possible, from every Branch, there is one student from
each year. Thus for a 4-year degree program in a branch, there will be four students,
one each from the first, the second, the third and the fourth year respectively.
The members of the Executive Committee at a College will be nominated by the Principal/
Director of the College. The Training and Placement Officer of the College may be an
important member of the Club.
Appendix 7 _page 2 of 6
Objectives:
i. Mentoring
Appendix 7 _page 3 of 6
Placements: The Club will work towards ensuring that every student gets an
excellent placement after she/ he completes his/ her studies. For this purpose, the
activities will be as follows:
Additional Activities for MBA Colleges: MBA students have to prepare studies on
strategies required for global businesses. So they have to study and prepare papers on some
specific countries.
When a student is encouraged to do an original case-study, it also helps him become a more
creative person. MBA students would require four different types of activities:
TYPE 1: Working with GTU-FSCC to study a financial service offered by some organization
and to determine the skills required for those, who are engaged in providing such a service.
TYPE 3: Working with GTU-SCM to study a marketing service offered by some organization
and to determine the skills required for those, who are engaged in providing such a service.
Appendix 7 _page 4 of 6
GTU Strength for becoming a leader in country-specific studies: Universities can conduct
such studies and keep them updated only through ‘relay studies’, whereby a student
performs the study and it is then carried forward, improved and updated by the next year’s
student. GTU has 106 Management Colleges and more than 1,000 faculty members. Many
of the faculty members are interested in the global business environment. So GTU is
uniquely placed to conduct such studies and become a store-house of information about the
business environment in the 200 countries of the third and the fourth world. GTU proposes
to encourage its students and faculty members to conduct such studies and it proposes to
put such case studies on its cloud, so that the work may be widely disseminated for
obtaining feedback.
a. During the visits to the businesses and industries, every student should learn about
linkages of these businesses with countries in the third and the fourth world. Then one
should try to locate an Industry Defined Problem (IDP) for a case study.
In case no business, with external linkages, can be located through visits to the industry,
one may take the help of trustees, teachers and friends to locate some such businesses.
Appendix 7 _page 5 of 6
b. During the summer after the first year, preparation of a report about a couple of
countries by a class. Each report should include the following for each country: (each
component may be taken up by a Group of about 6 students.)
d. Using the IDP, preparation of an “Intent to do- a Case study” about some business
aspect in the country of interest by every group of 6 students during the third semester
If possible, some students may plan to visit the country-of-interest during the term-break
between the third and fourth semesters for one to two weeks.
e. During the fourth semester, analysis of a global strategy problem currently or recently
facing a firm/country of interest. The case study should identify mechanisms for winning
the global strategy game overcoming cultural/social and institutional differences in the
country. The outputs should be a Case-study and a 30 minute presentation.
The issues involved in the MBA programs in our country are that most of the programs in
their syllabus content and in the way these are delivered do not inculcate and encourage
the spirit of creativity and innovation. GTU is attempting, through both the design of its new
MBA program (i) to create a syllabus, which has an intimate relationship with the local
context, while it is designed to prepare managers for the ‘flat’ and wired world of today and
(ii) to deliver the program such that the native creativity and spirit of innovation of a student
is sharpened and the student starts feeling comfortable in using his/ her own ideas, along
with the ideas of great management thinkers, for solving practical business problems. The
objective is that a GTU MBA should be able to face the uncertainties and challenges at his
work place by calling upon his native creativity and spirit of innovation.

25 INNOVATION SANKULS
Report
While the first objective of the Council is to nurture creativity and innovation within the
University community, it is designed to act as a catalyst of change for the whole of the
society. First, the Council is being set up as a collaboration between the technology
community in the University and the corresponding community in the society. Secondly the
very first task, set before the University community is to create a bridge, between the
learning community at the University and the outside world, through a specific time-bound
job, which is a requirement in the academic programs of the University. Thus from the
beginning, GTU Innovation Council will not only seek to imbue the spirit of innovation within
the ivory towers of the University institutions, it proposes to create an environment of
thinking about innovation in the societal systems so that the systems can break themselves
free from the cobwebs of past and move towards becoming creative and ever-new entities.
To establish a close and continuing inter-action between the industry and the students and
faculty members of Gujarat Technological University, GTU has designed an action plan for
creation of 25 Innovation Sankuls in Gujarat. (166 industry clusters+ 495 colleges of GTU
have been divided into 25 innovation clusters of GTU Colleges and industries, called
Innovation Sankuls). population of 250,000 in all the undergraduate and postgraduate
courses like Engineering, Management, pharmacy, MCA and Diploma and 10,000 plus
faculty members in GTU.
When in three years, every one of its more than 400,000 students and more than 20,000
faculty members are out in the field with the requirement that an innovative Final Year
project is to be completed and put on the TechPedia, when there will be no way to hide the
work, when good work will be awarded year after year, when thousands of small and big
industries get the opportunity of thinking, jointly with young minds and faculty members
about continuous improvements in their products & processes and when the law students
work to make patent process and IPR processes easy, an entirely new environment of
innovations will be created.
Management Architecture:
The GTU Innovation Council: chaired by the Vice Chancellor. The Council committee (CC) will
include Professor Anil Gupta, Techpedia, Chairs of State level Chambers and Vertical-
associations, ASSOCHAM, GCCI and other associations, government officers, Registrar of
GTU and others.
An Innovation Sankul: A Sankul is managed by two Co-Chairmen: one from a GTU College
and the other from the industry, a Secretary and a Joint Secretary: an industry engineer and
a student; the Sankul Committee (SC) with representations from Colleges, District Industry
Officers, industries and prominent citizens. Each Sankul have been created taking about 20
colleges from multiple fields for developing an inclusive innovation ecosystem.
Udisha (Innovation Club) at each GTU College: An Udisha Executive Committee (EC) at each
GTU College will co-ordinate with its Sankul.
Work In progress:
• Under this project 398 Udisha Clubs have been set up till today. The target is 495 by
30th April 2011.
• 25 Innovation Sankuls are at various stages of formation. This job will be completed
by 30th April 2011.
• About a thousand students have gone on Shodh Yatras in Rajkot, Ahmedabad,
Vadodara and Ahwa. Such Shodhyatras are conducted at the week-ends.
• About 30 thousand students are being mapped to industries and they will all be
going to industries in June and July (after their pre-Final Year exams in May).
Objectives:
• To inculcate among students and faculty a spirit of enquiry and confidence in their
ability as innovators
• To encourage the students to work with industries and businesses and R&D
institutions with the help of Techpedia
• To facilitate innovations by MSMEs through support by GTU students and faculties
• To create appropriate eco-systems and environment to foster innovation by
identifying the problems, designing and developing the product or improving the
business / industrial processes, mentoring students/researchers during the project
and evaluation of the project.
Report on the meeting of 16th April 2011:
The three Innovation Sankuls at Ahmedabad had been planned at a meeting on 3rd March
2011. On 16th April, a meeting for working out of 18 more Innovation Sankuls in various
parts of Gujarat was organized. To the meeting were invited the Principals and Directors of
some of the Colleges along with the Managing Trustees of the Colleges. The managing
trustees of colleges were also key participant in this meeting along with Co-Chairpersons of
the Sankuls. The meeting was chaired by the Honorable VC, GTU.
The meeting of 16th April was initiated with a welcome address by Honorable VC, Prof
Akshai Agrawal. He discussed the purpose of creation of the GTU Innovation Council. He
outlined the action agenda for the Council for the next three months. A presentation on
GTU Innovation Council was presented to the Sankul authorities by Mr. Hiranmay Mahanta
from Techpedia. The stories of achievements and successes during the last six weeks of
work of one of the Innovation Sankuls at Ahmedabad were narrated by Prof M.R.Patel (Co-
Chairperson, Academic-Naroda Sankul). He presented both qualitative and quantitative
aspects of achievements during the industrial shodh yatras carried out at various industry
clusters in and outside the Sankul. An open discussion session involving the Sankul
authorities and Honorable VC, GTU brought out a methodology, which can help develop a
progressive knowledge ecosystem at GTU based on innovation. Prof K.N.Mistry, Prof J.V.
Desai, Prof M.R.Patel, Dr S.S.Pancholi and other principals of respective Sankuls shared
some significant ideas for further strengthening the innovation management system and for
bringing each Udisha club at every GTU college into the main loop of action agenda. Prof
Ved Vyas Dwivedi stressed on harnessing the technical potential of younger students even
at very 1st year level and shared some exciting success stories based on his experiments at
Junagarh. The managing trustees from various institutes like SCET, Surat, Parul Institute of
Engineering and Technologies shared some critical thoughts which will ensure the
productivity of each Innovation Sankul and help bring industries and academia a step closer.
A detailed discussion was held on involving pharmacy student in solving the real life issues
of related industry clusters. Prof Akshai Agarwal shared his thoughts on creating clusters of
MBAs and associated disciplines by bringing service industries and IT/ITES industries into the
loop. Mr Gandhi from SCET (Innovation Sankul at Surat) suggested the creation of new
motivational factors for both students and faculties. These can create an environment of
awareness on IPR so that the dream of bringing Laxmi and Saraswati together as envisaged
by Padmabhushan R.A.Mashelkar (President Global Research Alliance and former DG, CSIR)
may be realized. Every participant through this discussion agreed on creating a mindset for
innovation by informing each of the GTU student and faculty about the objectives and
action agenda of the Council at the college level. There was a consensus for making an effort
for better utilizing the summer of innovation agenda and linking students to industries
through industrial shodh yatras to obtain the Industry Defined Problems. IDPs will be
evaluated in August when the first semester of Final Year starts. The best 1000 IDPs will be
given awards by GTU. It is expected that the professionals from the industries will come
forward to both mentor and nurture the creativity of students during both the semesters of
the Final Year. GTU will assist the best student/faculty projects for protecting their IPR and
will help the students use the existing incubators and venture capital firms for converting
their projects to marketable products.
It was decided that the following meetings for disseminating the idea of GTU Innovation
Council may be arranged by each Sankul without any delay: (i) A meeting of all the College
Principals/ Directors in the Sankul: every College, which has not yet formed the Udisha Club
will be asked to form it without any delay. (ii) A meeting of all its faculty members by every
College Principal/ Director (iii) A meeting of the entire Sankul Committee consisting of all
the Principals/ Directors of the Colleges in the Sankul and the industry personnel (iv) A
meeting of all the Udisha Clubs of the Sankul to be hosted by the Co-Chairperson (industry
zone). It was also decided that the information about software industries in the region of
the Sankul will be collected by the two Chairpersons and sent to GTU. Moreover the two
chairpersons will take steps to bring the software industries into the fold of the Sankul.
In addition at the meeting of 16th April was discussed the design of a roadmap for
developing innovation culture in both industry and academia. It was decided that by the end
of May, through shodh yatras or otherwise, all the pre-Final Year students will be mapped to
some industry so that during June and July the students can all visit and study the processes
at the industries and develop their plans for the Final Year project anchored in improving
some product or process in some industry.

Unique features of GTU Innovation council
• Creating User Defined Innovation Eco-system- To create value for the research
work, that has already been done, and the research which is under process at GTU, a
User defined innovation ecosystem has been designed. Students and faculties at GTU
are now defining the user’s need (User: industry, society, business) through
Industrial Shodh Yatras which will be converted to a final year project /thesis in UG,
PG, PhD level at GTU from July 2011.
Around 40,000 projects will be attempted based on real industry floor issues at GTU
and even 1% success rate will deliver a few hundred solutions to MSMEs (Micro,
Small & Medium Enterprises) every year.
• Mapping of Industrial Needs and Academic research- All GTU research works in UG
and PG level are now being scouted from all colleges and are being put together at
www.techpedia.in .This will map the mind of 1 lac technical students every year and
innovation quotient of the university will go up in a single stroke. By scouting the
IDPs (industry defined projects) from the floors of MSMEs, GTU students and
faculties will map the industrial needs in 166 industry clusters of Gujarat from all the
engineering disciplines.
Some industrial clusters have been created to address the need of specific sectorial
industries in state. However every technology college caters to a broad spectrum of
industries and businesses. Hence in case of such clusters, the students of more than
one Sankul may be associated.
• Creating sustainable motivation for students and researchers - GTU will reward 2
credits in its academic system to define the real floor issues (Industry defined
projects, IDPs) of MSMEs (Micro, small and medium enterprises) of the State. Best
1000 problem proposals which will be submitted to University in August after
industrial Shodh Yatra in the summer will be supported by the university to drive the
ideas to product format. Four academic credits will be rewarded for attempting to
solve these IDPs (industry defined projects) in the final year of GTU students.
• Emphasis on process innovation – For the very 1st time GTU Innovation Council will
not only focus on the desired production solution for industries but it is also
emphasizing on documenting the best ways to succeed in specific type of research
work and to note down the ways which increase the time cycle of developing
solutions in corresponding research areas. Multiple teams of students and faculties
at multiple places will attempt similar industry problems to develop a model of
collaborative research and product designing in innovative ways. This will reduce the
time cycle of developing innovative products and processes for industries.
• Socializing Technologies- GTU Innovation Council is not only addressing the floor
issue of industries but also scouting and documenting the socio-technical issues of
tribal people and the most backward districts of the State like Dang. Through Shodh
Yatras, GTU students are interacting with the rural and tribal people to map their
socio-technical needs and converting them as research projects like designing low
cost solar application for tribal areas and designing machines to process Chironji
seeds in Dang districts.
• Protecting IPR, Intellectual property rights and bringing Saraswati and Laxmi
together (promoting knowledge economy along with innovations.)-GTU Innovation

presentation "Innovation Sankuls" was circulated to the members and discussed. It has also
been planned to boost activities of "Shodh Yatra" through training and placement cell of the
institution.
As per the discussion at the GTU Innovation Sankul meeting on 16th April, 2011, Udisha
Club at VVP Engg. College has geared up with the activities of the Innovation Sankul at
Rajkot-3 (Metoda GIDC). Mr. Hiranmay Mahanta of Techpedia.in had visited the colleges
during the last semester and he had held inter-active sessions with the students to map the
academic need factors.
Mr. Amit Degada, Convenor of UDISHA club and his team is in regular touch with
students and their corresponding industries since last 4 months for initial level mapping and
have already established the coordinators from each department. Mr. Ashvin Karemore, Dr.
Krishna Joshi, Mr. Bhavesh Dobaria, Mr. Sachin Rajani, Mr. Dipesh Kundalia, Mr.
Girish Mulchandani and Mr. Kunal Khimani are the Co-coordinators from the different
branches. For the ‘Shodh Yatras’, the students of 6th semester Mechanical and Electrical
have linked with Kadvani Forge LTD., Metoda since 1st week of March, GIDC. They are
working with Mr. Jayant Jamuvar (Head, Designing Department) with two projects. Milap
Vadi, Nishank Dholakia, Hiren makwana and Rahul Kundnani of 6th Semester are making
progress on the project of Power Factor Improvement and Pneumatic Control of a forging
machine to improve Efficiency of the Forging Machines. Prof. Sachin Parikh, Co-Chairman
(academia) of Rajkot Innovation Sankul-3 has guided the above teams for linking maximum
possible MSMEs of nearby GIDCs to the student groups.
The above Udisha Club and a team lead by Mr. Utkarsh Mehta and Mr Rashesh Dave
have successfully arranged a dozen industrial Shodh Yatras involving students of various
colleges and disciplines in different colleges. They have successfully linked around 100
industries in 4 GIDC estates with various departments of respective colleges where a few
students and faculties have started working, based upon the IDPs taken from the floor of
MSME and larger industries and business.
Prof. Mitesh Dadhania has added a similar effort at Sri Aurobindo Institute of
Management, Rajkot. They have explored many frugal ways for socializing the
technologies and management applications with impact at BOP and MSMEs for whom these
young management students can be a great resource person.
The GTU Innovation Council-enabled UDISHA clubs in various colleges prove that ‘Practice
is the best of all instructors ‘by facilitating industrial visits in an empathetic manner where
the user defined issues are being taken as the key target to be solved. These ‘Shodh Yatras’,
as the name suggests, are quests for innovation. On 21st March 2011, the students of
Atmiya Institute of Technology & Science, Rajkot had visited Rainbow Technocast
industry for the same and subsequently a half a dozen industries after this visit.. The
industries were visited under the guidance of Prof. Ashish Kothari and lead by Mr.
Rashesh Dave and Mr. Utkarsh Mehta. There were 24 teams from various disciplines of
engineering who returned with a rich, first-hand, practical experience of industrial practice
and started working upon the located issues even in multidisciplinary context. They have
mapped around 4 dozen industries basically from MSME sectors during the past 3 months
and 13 attempts have been made to design the prototypes of the proposed value added
solutions for corresponding industries either in improving a product or process parameter.
Industrial Shodh Yatras are aiming to 4 basic aspects: 1) To benchmark the current level of
energy, material and technology youths in the enterprise.2) To identify any innovation that the
Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) unit may have tried 3) To locate a set of well-
defined problems, which may be solved by the students jointly with the faculty and floor persons
from MSMEs/Users.( These problems may be taken up by students as their final year project or as
a challenge project).4) To identify the policy bottlenecks which are coming in the way of realizing
fully the entrepreneurial potential of 1 lac young minds at GTU.

The students and faculties of GTU are being encouraged and supported to design and develop
products and services with more performance, from less material, less cost, less time, less
environmental pollution and for the benefit of the four billion people, whose income levels are
even less than two dollars a day. The concept of Gandhian Engineering & sciences /Frugal
Engineering & sciences and innovation for “Creating more from less for More and More" is
being insisted to focus on socio-technical needs of the country.
GTU has become the 1st such large scale university in the world to take a lead in this challenge.
Mr Hiranmay Mahanta from Techpedia represented a team to benchmark such
frugal/Gandhian innovations at various colleges at GTU including polytechnic. The study reveals
that a huge potential of young students and researchers in these colleges can be tapped and
from which meaningful solutions/products can be developed. A few labs of GTU colleges were
visited to map the innovation quotient of the diploma students and it was revealed that a
decent quality research trend is propelling the innovation agenda at even UG level. The key
challenge is to protect the IPR of the corresponding innovators at various GTU colleges and look
forward to either possible technology transfer or entrepreneurship modules development even
at UG/Diploma level. GTU innovation council found a great deal of possibility in patenting such
innovations at University and a low cost channel is being developed at GTU for filing 1000
patents for those frugal and efficient innovative projects/solutions for these students and
faculties. Mr. Hiranmay Mahanta visited a few college labs in Mehshana Innovation Sankul like
LCIT and similar colleges and found a great possibility in creating sustainable knowledge
ecosystem fuelled by innovation in the coming days.
We have not yet been able to explore all possible opportunities for improving access,
affordability, sustainability, efficiency, productivity and competitiveness in the needy domain of
socio-technical applications and for focusing on bottom of the pyramid of our society. These
innovations are one more step in that direction. The students and faculties are being
encouraged and supported to design and develop products and services with more
performance, from less material, less cost, less time, less environmental pollution and for the
benefit of the four billion people, whose income levels are even less than two dollars a day.
GTU Innovation Council is tapping the best innovations which have been developed by GTU students
and faculties at various colleges and monitoring the ongoing research works by the Innovations Sankuls
and GTU’s Udisha Clubs at GTU colleges. To create awareness among students and researchers at GTU,
the Council is developing modular programs so that a few hundred best innovations can be tried for
patents, at PG, UG and Polytechnic levels. GTU Innovation Council will support such frugal and socially
viable innovations to get patented for preserving credentials and IPR of the innovators. GTU Innovation
Council will support the innovations with some novelty to enable the possibility of mind to market
journey .This will lead innovation fuelled techno-entrepreneurship modules in GTU colleges.

After establishing UDISHA clubs successfully in all the Sankuls, GTU Innovation Council has been
establishing working relationships with state-wide associations in different vertical areas. Dr Rupesh
Vasani organized a meeting of the Executive Committee Members of Gujarat Institute of Civil
Engineers and Architects (GICEA) with Dr. Akshai Aggarwal at GTU Conference Hall on 3rd May 2011.
Dignitaries like Mr. Bharat Modi, Mr. Vatsal Patel, Mr. Bhadresh Shah, Mr. Dilip Patel, Mr. Mukesh
Majeethia and Mr. Bakul Desai from the GICEA and Prof. Rupesh Vasani from SAL Institute were
present.
GTU Innovation Council expects GICEA to join hands with Civil Engineering (CE) departments of GTU
Colleges to create an ecosystem for teachers and students to revolutionize the present state of
education in CE and Architecture. Most of the Builders and many of the CE firms lie outside the
conventional industrial estates. It was decided that GICEA will give one or two senior members for
each of the 25 Sankuls so that every Sankul Committee may be able to deal with the requirements of
the students in the fields of interest of GICEA. Mr. Modi said that GICEA has around 5000 members
across the state and hence few members would be nominated in each Sankul form GECIA.
During industrial Shodhyatras, 4-5 students and faculty will be linked to dedicated industry of this
sector to define their flow issues and problems scouted from the floors of industries by professors
and industry people. The field engineers may support the students work as mentors when the
students are working on the Final Year project during the next two semesters.
Mr. Bharat Modi, President, GICEA said that GTU Innovation Council could effectively use the
infrastructure of GICEA for optimum benefit by various civil engineering departments. Mr. Bhadresh
Shah emphasized on the need for creating experts in every niche field in civil engineering, especially
transportation and environment. He also suggested benchmarking the present curriculum with
respect to the present industrial needs and joint evaluation of the problem statements.
GICEA members suggested that small modular courses during holidays/week-ends could be designed
for civil engineering students and faculty, based upon the need of cutting edge demands at present.
Dr. Aggarwal said that any Innovation Sankul could take up Continuing Education programs, in

The below points were appreciated as the unique features of GTU Innovation Council after interacting
with around 5 dozen GTU’s Udisha clubs (Innovation Clubs ) and their members in last week.
1) Creating User Defined Innovation Eco-system- To create value for the research work, that has
already been done, and the research which is under process at GTU, a User defined innovation
ecosystem has been designed. Students and faculties at GTU are now defining the user’s (industry,
society, and business) need via Industrial Shodh Yatras which will be converted as final year project
/thesis in UG, PG, and PhD level at GTU from July 2011. Around 40,000 projects will be attempted based
on real industry floor issues at GTU and even 1% success rate will deliver a few hundred solutions to
MSMEs (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises) of country every year.
2) Mapping of Industrial Needs and Academic research- All GTU research works in UG and PG level
are now being scouted from all colleges and are being put together at www.techpedia.in .This will map
the mind of 1 lac technical students every year and innovation quotient of the university will go up in a
single stroke. By scouting the IDPs (industry defined projects) from floors of MSMEs (Micro, Small &
Medium Enterprises) GTU students and faculties will map the industrial needs in 166 industry clusters of
Gujarat from all engineering disciplines.
4) Industry-Academia cluster development involving GIDCs and GTU colleges- Involving GTU
colleges and MSME (Micro, small and medium enterprises) clusters, 25 GTU innovation Sankuls have
been created in various parts of Gujarat. e.g.- Ahmedabad, Vatva, Gandhinagar, Naroda, Vadodara,
Godhra, Vallabh Vidya Nagar, Surat, Vapi, Ankleshwer, Rajkot, Morbi, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh,
Kuchchh, Surendranagar, Mehshana, Patan etc. The Innovation Sankuls will have 18-25 colleges of
engineering / MBA / pharmacy / polytechnic / MCA and a thousand MSMEs. Some clusters /Sankuls
have been created to address the need of specific sectorial industries in state.
5) Creating sustainable motivation for students and researchers - GTU will reward 2 credits in its
academic system to define the real floor issues (Industry defined projects, IDPs) of MSMEs (Micro, small
and medium enterprises) of the State. Best 1000 problem proposals which will be submitted to
University in July after industrial Shodh Yatra in summer of 2011 will be supported by the university to
drive the ideas to product format. Four academic credits will be rewarded for attempting to solve these
IDPs (industry defined projects) in the final year of GTU students.
7) Emphasis on process innovation – For the very 1st time GTU Innovation Council will not only focus
on the desired production solution for industries but it is also emphasizing on documenting the best
ways to succeed in specific type of research works and to note down the ways which increases the time
cycle of developing solution in corresponding research areas. Multiple teams of students and faculties at
multiple places will attempt similar industry problems to develop a model of collaborative research and
product designing in innovative ways. This will reduce the time cycle of developing innovative products
and processes for industries.
8) Socializing Technologies- GTU Innovation Council is not only addressing the floor issue of industries
but also scouting and documenting the socio-technical issues of tribal people and the most backward
districts of the State like Dang. Through Shodh Yatras GTU students are interacting with the rural and
tribal people to map their socio-technical needs and converting them as research projects like designing
low cost solar application for tribal areas and designing machines to process Chironji seeds in Dang
districts.
9) Protecting IPR, Intellectual property rights and bringing Saraswati and Laxmi together
(promoting knowledge economy along with innovations.)-GTU Innovation Council will help the
best thesis/projects attempted by students and faculties to get promoted and the University will help
them in protecting their intellectual property rights (IPR) so that research will lead to sustainable
knowledge economy with proper credit protection with respect to the innovators. Awareness will be
created among students and faculties about above issues to increase the efficiency of the system at
each Sankul and Innovation Club level.
Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has initiated one of its kind of award to honour the best cost
effective innovations at academic level that could benefit the masses. The categories for the awards
have been instituted after the 32 engineering disciplines offered at GTU. Two awards will be given in
each category of under-graduate, post-graduate and diploma courses. The award will encourage and
support students and faculty to design cost-effective and eco-friendly products and services for the
larger section of society. The innovators will be motivated to put their efforts together in socializing
technologies. Students and researchers at GTU will not only innovate to create value for money but also
to create value for many. The innovation clubs will streamline the attempts aimed at creating more from
less for more and more.
11) Harnessing the numerous months of efforts of research for productive innovation
creation- GTU students are putting some 10 months of effort in their final year in attempting to solve
projects as a part of the curriculum. Around 1 lac students while putting 10 months of effort per year
constitute nearly 1 million human months of efforts. Through this process GTU Innovation Council will
effectively harness the students’ inputs guided by some 15,000 faculties at GTU in a collaborative
environment to create a sustainable knowledge ecosystem in a period of the coming 3 years with a “feel
the difference approach”.
12) Exchanging mentors from industry and academia- GTU innovation Sankuls will exchange floor
engineers from various MSMEs (Micro, small and medium enterprises) with corresponding faculties of
particular stream which will further lead to design a road map in academia for a need based evolution.
Students will get a practical insight and feedbacks from industry floors will enable them in blending their
thoughts with proper orientation to adapt innovative approaches in solving real life issues.
•To inculcate among students and faculty a spirit of enquiry, confidence in their ability and innovation
•To encourage the students to work with industries and businesses and R&D institutions with the help
of Techpedia and existing R&D infrastructures and ecosystem.
•To facilitate innovations by MSMEs (Micro, small and medium enterprises) by value addition through
support by GTU students and faculties
•To create appropriate eco-systems and environment to foster innovation by identifying the problems,
designing and developing the product or improving the business / industrial processes, mentoring
students/researchers during the project and evaluation of the project.

The welcome speech for the Program was given by Co-chairman of the Sankul Dr. Sachin
Parikh. He had given the idea for what is the basic logic of Foundation behind the idea of GTU
Innovation Sankul. He said that Indian Society is highly innovative and educated. In past, the
products of India were widely used across the globe as India had some of the unique products
available from the society due to innovative and scientific background. But gradually due to
collapse of the Great universities of India and failure of traditional ‘Pathshala’ system. The
universities, established by the English and after Independence by us, have failed to make their
students more practically sound. He emphasized on Practical Knowledge of the students and said
that for that we can take the maximum advantage to change this scenario by the novel concept of
GTU Innovation Sankul and invited all to work together to strengthen the activities of the
Sankul.
Prof. Amit D Degada, UDISHA Club Convener, VVP Engineering College gave a presentation
about GTU Innovation Sankul and UDISHA Club. He presented the idea of GTU Innovation

some of the success story of GTU students. Finally Prof. Amit Degada and One Techpedia
member, Mr. Shrey, sent from Ahmedabad by Techpedia.in, addressed the questions of the
invited members. In the Question answer session, the following questions were raised.
Q. Can we go to any industry, if any Industry Specific to the branch is not available in city?
Ans. Yes. With some examples and said that GTU has tied-up with ASSOCHAM, Electrical-
Electronics Association, Pharmaceuticals and Civil Engineering Association. This would
facilitate GTU students visit the Industries
Q. Can we go to industry that is not falling in our Sankul e.g. Morbi ceramic Industries?
Ans. Yes.
Prof Amit Degada, also emphasized to academician that we should work with positive
mind set and make Industralist more ‘feel Good’ by the efforts of the faculties and the students.
He said that it’s said that in 21st century whole world looks for progress it look at India and
when India look for progress, it looks at Gujarat but we should make this further that
when Gujarat looks for progress it will look at GTU Innovation Sankul. Let’s make the #1
state further strengthen its position.
In that session it was suggested by one faculty that GTU should try to omit some first
year subjects which is not useful for students in future (e.g. MOS is not useful for EC, IC, CE, IT
and Electrical) and introduce some subjects that will enhance the creativity of the students.
Mr. Pravinbhai Maniar, who is the source of Inspiration for VVP engineering college also
praised the efforts of GTU VC Dr. Akshai Aggarwal. He also said that GTU also knows the
importance of Rajkot as Educational and Industrial hub and that’s why Dr. Aggarwal has given 3
GTU Innovation Sankuls. He also presented the concept of ‘DARSHAN YATRA’, in which we
should take our first year students to visit the local industry as soon as they come to the first year
and develop the atmosphere from the first year itself. For Second year Students, he suggested to
organize ‘ANUBHAV YATRA’ in that all the second year students should be taken into the
industry which was visited in the first year for a longer duration. He wished his feelings towards
GTU VC Dr. Akshai Agrawal by saying that ‘May God make the novel ideas of GTU VC A-
kshaya (which will never end)’.
At last Vote of thanks was given by Mr. Kunal Khimani, UDISHA Club member, IT

GTU INNOVATION COUNCIL
GTU’s Udisha Innovation Clubs
GTU Innovation Council has been working to rejuvenate the spirit of innovation and to
nurture and encourage creativity among more than 250,000 students and 10,000 faculty
members in all the undergraduate and postgraduate courses of Engineering, Management,
Pharmacy, MCA and Polytechnic.
Techpedia had been working to make the information about all the projects done by
engineering students widely available through its web-site. It had also been working on
developing a National mentors Network for student projects.
Since students projects are an important part of the strategies required for the work of GTU
Innovation Council, GTU readily agreed work jointly with Techpedia.in as soon as the
Managing Director of Techpedia.in met the new Vice-Chancellor in June 2010. On 13th July,
2010 GTU invited Prof Anil Gupta to address a conference of the Directors of the MBA
Colleges, affiliated with GTU. While a joint pilot project for offering industry problems to
undergraduate students was taken up in Rajkot region by Mr Hiranmay Mahanta, GTU
organized and participated in a number of industry meetings at Ahmedabad, starting from
August 2, 2010. Once the pilot project started bringing successful results, GTU Innovation
Council work was developed further.
GTU Innovation Council has created 25 Innovation Sankul in Gujarat involving 166 industry
clusters and colleges of GTU. The capacity of each Sankul is being built by involving
faculty members, professionals, students and owners & professionals of industries. Each
Sankul is being encouraged to develop a methodology of working, which inculcates
innovation through joint working. At the end of every year, the working will be modulated
after a review of the work during the year. This will lead to a cycle of capacity building and
renewal during the year. During the summer, thousands of students and faculty members will
work jointly with industries to determine the Industry Defined Problems (IDP). These may
relate to improving the quality of the products. Or these may be for solving some problems,
relating to the processes at the industries. At the beginning of the academic year, the output
from the students will be evaluated and the best proposals will be given awards. The project
problems will be uploaded on the Techpedia, the national knowledge portal.

Appendix 1
GTU (Gujarat Technical University) Innovation Council
Her Excellency, the President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil has declared the decade of Innovation
2010‐2020 for inclusive growth of the nation. GTU has conceptualized and implemented the
roadmap of innovation in the Indian context and created GTU Innovation council at University level.
Unique features of GTU Innovation council
Creating User Defined Innovation Eco‐system‐ To create value for the research
work, that has already been done, and the research which is under process at GTU, a
User defined innovation ecosystem has been designed. Students and faculties at GTU
are now defining the user’s (industry, society, and business) need via Industrial
Shodh Yatras which will be converted as final year project /thesis in UG, PG, and PhD
level at GTU from July 2011.
Around 40,000 projects will be attempted based on real industry floor issues at GTU
and even 1% success rate will deliver a few hundred solutions to MSMEs (Micro,
Small & Medium Enterprises) of country every year.

GTU INNOVATION COUNCIL
Mapping of Industrial Needs and Academic research‐ All GTU research works in UG
and PG level are now being scouted from all colleges and are being put together at
www.techpedia.in .This will map the mind of 1 lac technical students every year and
innovation quotient of the university will go up in a single stroke. By scouting the
IDPs (industry defined projects) from floors of MSMEs (Micro, Small & Medium
Enterprises) GTU students and faculties will map the industrial needs in 166 industry
clusters of Gujarat from all engineering disciplines.
Democratizing innovation management process‐ To ensure the active participation
of each student of GTU in various stages, GTU Innovation Council has devised 3 stage
systems by creating GTU Sectorial Council, GTU Innovation Sankuls/Clusters and
Udisha (Innovation) Clubs. More than 300 Innovation Clubs (Udisha) have already
been established in GTU colleges by now and all GTU colleges will be establishing
Udisha clubs by this academic year. An udisha club consists of students and faculties
of each stream of engineering. Sectorial Council at University has all vertical industry
association representatives, who will take care of specific branch of engineering and
technology in innovation clusters/Sankuls.
Creating sustainable motivation for students and researchers ‐ GTU will reward 2
credits in its academic system to define the real floor issues (Industry defined
projects, IDPs) of MSMEs (Micro, small and medium enterprises) of the State. Best
1000 problem proposals which will be submitted to University in July after industrial
Shodh Yatra in summer of 2011 will be supported by the university to drive the ideas
to product format. Four academic credits will be rewarded for attempting to solve
these IDPs (industry defined projects) in the final year of GTU students.
Emphasis on process innovation – For the very 1st time GTU Innovation Council will
not only focus on the desired production solution for industries but it is also
emphasizing on documenting the best ways to succeed in specific type of research
works and to note down the ways which increases the time cycle of developing
solution in corresponding research areas. Multiple teams of students and faculties at
multiple places will attempt similar industry problems to develop a model of
collaborative research and product designing in innovative ways. This will reduce the
time cycle of developing innovative products and processes for industries.
Socializing Technologies‐ GTU Innovation Council is not only addressing the floor
issue of industries but also scouting and documenting the socio‐technical issues of
tribal people and the most backward districts of the State like Dang. Through Shodh
Yatras GTU students are interacting with the rural and tribal people to map their
socio‐technical needs and converting them as research projects like designing low
cost solar application for tribal areas and designing machines to process Chironji
seeds in Dang districts.
Protecting IPR, Intellectual property rights and bringing Saraswati and Laxmi
together (promoting knowledge economy along with innovations.)‐GTU Innovation
Council will help the best thesis/projects attempted by students and faculties to get
promoted and the University will help them in protecting their intellectual property
rights (IPR) so that research will lead to sustainable knowledge economy with proper
credit protection with respect to the innovators. Awareness will be created among
students and faculties about above issues to increase the efficiency of the system at
each Sankul and Innovation Club level.
Promoting Frugal/Gandhian Innovations‐ In an attempt to promote the concept of
Gandhian engineering at university level in the state, Techpedia.in, in association
with Gujarat Technological University (GTU), has initiated one of its kind of award to
honour the best cost effective innovations at academic level that could benefit the
masses. The categories for the awards have been instituted after the 32 engineering

disciplines offered at GTU. Two awards will be given in each category of under‐
graduate, post‐graduate and diploma courses. The award will encourage and support
students and faculty to design cost‐effective and eco‐friendly products and services
for the larger section of society. The innovators will be motivated to put their efforts
together in socializing technologies. Students and researchers at GTU will not only
innovate to create value for money but also to create value for many. The innovation
clubs will streamline the attempts aimed at creating more from less for more and
more.
Harnessing the numerous months of efforts of research for productive innovation
creation‐ GTU students are putting some 10 months of effort in their final year in
attempting to solve projects as a part of the curriculum. Around 1 lac students while
putting 10 months of effort per year constitute nearly 1 million human months of
efforts. Through this process GTU Innovation Council will effectively harness the
students’ inputs guided by some 15,000 faculties at GTU in a collaborative
environment to create a sustainable knowledge ecosystem in a period of the coming
3 years with a “feel the difference approach”.
Exchanging mentors from industry and academia‐ GTU innovation Sankuls will
exchange floor engineers from various MSMEs (Micro, small and medium
enterprises) with corresponding faculties of particular stream which will further lead
to design a road map in academia for a need based evolution. Students will get a
practical insight and feedbacks from industry floors will enable them in blending
their thoughts with proper orientation to adapt innovative approaches in solving real
life issues.
GTU Innovation Council will work
•To inculcate among students and faculty a spirit of enquiry, confidence in their ability and
innovation
•To encourage the students to work with industries and businesses and R&D institutions
with the help of Techpedia
•To facilitate innovations by MSMEs (Micro, small and medium enterprises) by value
addition through support by GTU students and faculties
•To create appropriate eco‐systems and environment to foster innovation by identifying the
problems, designing and developing the product or improving the business / industrial
processes, mentoring students/researchers during the project and evaluation of the project.

Clubs in GTU Colleges
A Note for Colleges
GTU Innovation Sankuls: To bring industries, businesses and GTU Colleges together,
GTU is planning to set up Innovation Sankuls. Each Sankul will represent a cluster of GTU
Colleges and the industries in the area. One such Sankul of which your college would be a
member will be set up soon by GTU.
A Club at every GTU College: To take advantage of the Sankuls and to organize other
placement activities at each College, it has been suggested that every GTU college should set
up a Club. The Club may be called the Udisha1 (Universal Development of Integrated Skills
through Higher Education) Club of the College.
General Guidelines for setting up a Club:
Each club will have an Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee will have some faculty and students of various branches as
members. One of the faculty member will act as its coordinator.
Faculty Members: As far as possible, each Branch should have one faculty member
in the Executive Committee.
Student Members: As far as possible, from every Branch, there may be one student
from each year. Thus during this semester, from each branch, there may be three
students, one each from the first, the second and the third year respectively.
The members of the Executive Committee at a College will be nominated by the Principal/
Director of the College. The Training and Placement Officer of the College may be an
important member of the Club.
The Principal/ Director will be the Patron of the Club.
Activities:
1. The club will coordinate the activities of corresponding Navsarjan Sankul at college
level.
a. To establish a close and continuing inter-action
between the industries and the College
b. To decide about the Final Year projects in
consultation with industries

3. Additional Activities for MBA Colleges: MBA students have to prepare studies on
strategies required for global businesses. So they have to study and prepare papers on
some specific countries.
When a student is encouraged to do an original case-study, it also helps him become a
more creative person. MBA students would require four different types of activities:
TYPE 1: Working with GTU-FSCC to study a financial service offered by some
organization and to determine the skills required for those, who are engaged in
providing such a service.
TYPE 2: Working with GTU-CHRSOS to study an organizational structure or the HR
policies of some organization or of some large Department of an organization and to
determine the skills required for those, who are at various levels in the organization or
for those, who are providing a HR service.
TYPE 3: Working with GTU-SCM to study a marketing service offered by some
organization and to determine the skills required for those, who are engaged in
providing such a service.
TYPE 4: GTU Objectives in developing country-specific studies: Our management
institutions have done a good job educating our MBA students by using Harvard case
studies as well as similar material from other good sources. Our management and
business schools have also conducted many good studies about businesses in China,
USA and a few other countries. However Indian Universities must study the business
environment from the Indian perspective for all the 270 countries of the world. A
study from the Indian perspective may lead to a significantly different understanding
as compared to a study from the American or European or Chinese perspective. Such
studies may be valuable to Indian businesses. But these may also add value to the
world’s store-house of knowledge by providing a study from the Indian perspective to
the available studies from the American, European and the Chinese perspectives.
GTU Strength for becoming a leader in country-specific studies: Universities can
conduct such studies and keep them updated only through ‘relay studies’, whereby a
student performs the study and it is then carried forward, improved and updated by
the next year’s student. GTU has 106 Management Colleges and more than 1,000
faculty members. Many of the faculty members are interested in the global business
environment. So GTU is uniquely placed to conduct such studies and become a store-
house of information about the business environment in the 200 countries of the third
and the fourth world. GTU proposes to encourage its students and faculty members to
conduct such studies and it proposes to put such case studies on its cloud, so that the
work may be widely disseminated for obtaining feedback.
The process for the study of global strategy:
a. During the visits to the businesses and industries, every student should learn
about linkages of these businesses with countries in the third and the fourth world.
Then one should try to locate an Industry Defined Problem (IDP) for a case study.
10 | Gujarat Technological University (http://www.gtu.ac.in/) |
Contact: pstovc@gtucolleges.in | Tel: +91‐79‐2630 0699;
GTU INNOVATION COUNCIL
In case no business, with external linkages, can be located through visits to the
industry, one may take the help of trustees, teachers and friends to locate some
such businesses.
b. During the summer after the first year, preparation of a report about a couple
of countries by a class. Each report should include the following for each country:
(each component may be taken up by a Group of about 6 students.)
(i) Its economic history and its historical context
(ii) Its trading partners and the products
(iii) Its economic linkages with India
(iv) Its major companies
(v) Any Indian-owned businesses
(vi) Any prominent Indians in the country
(vii) Good Business Colleges
c. Submission and Evaluation of the Report at the start of the third semester
d. Using the IDP, preparation of an “Intent to do- a Case study” about some
business aspect in the country of interest by every group of 6 students during the
third semester
If possible, some students may plan to visit the country-of-interest during the
term-break between the third and fourth semesters for one to two weeks.
d. During the fourth semester, analysis of a global strategy problem currently or
recently facing a firm/country of interest. The case study should identify
mechanisms for winning the global strategy game overcoming cultural/social and
institutional differences in the country. The outputs should be a Case-study and a
30 minute presentation.
The issues involved in the MBA programs in our country are that most of the programs in
their syllabus content and in the way these are delivered do not inculcate and encourage the
spirit of creativity and innovation. GTU is attempting, through both the design of its new
MBA program (i) to create a syllabus, which has an intimate relationship with the local
context, while it is designed to prepare managers for the ‘flat’ world of today and (ii) to
deliver the program such that the native creativity and spirit of innovation of a student is
sharpened and the student starts feeling comfortable in using his own ideas, along with the
ideas of great management thinkers, for solving practical business problems. The objective is
that a GTU MBA should be able to face the uncertainties and challenges at his work place by
calling upon his native creativity and spirit of innovation.

Girish Mulchandani, from Computer Eng department of VVP Eng College, offered to provide
various IT services to the Industry people free of cost in case of smaller and cottage
industries where GTU students can be effective resource persons to improve the efficiencies
of products and processes. Shri S.C. Mamtora (Secretary, Rajkot Electroplaters And Metal
Finisher Association) said that the area of Electroplating is required to be included in the
curriculum of engineering colleges in India. Dr Sachin Parikh pointed out that GTU has
already done it. Shri Jayant Jamuvar (Head, Designing, Kadvani Forge), offered to help GTU
in designing the curricula of GTU in the area of Material Science so that its graduates may be
able to satisfy the demands of the industries. Dr. Aggarwal welcomed the offer. Shri
