Grade One End of year examination Revision Guide – May 2011

16th May 2011

‫السالم عليكم و رحمة ﷲ و بركاته‬

Dear parents,

The End of Year examination week will begin on Saturday the 11th
June 2011. Information on the exact dates for specific subjects will
follow shortly in a letter from the school.

This examination week is testing a selection of the material that we’ve

covered since the midyear point of the academic year.

There will be a revision week prior to the examination week. The

revision week will start 4th June 2011. Subject teachers will give
students additional revision worksheets to complete during those
revision lessons.

The following provides a summary of what topics can be revised at

home.

Information on Arabic and other subjects should follow from the

teachers of those subjects.

This booklet includes information on: English, Maths, Science, Social

Studies, Islamic Studies (in English) and I.T.

Thank you.

Spelling
Please memorise the spelling of these words we’ve already covered in
class. In the exam the written spelling of ten of these words will be
tested.

try soap
tail bright
she dream
play shirt
fastest may
snow burn
each rain
friends slower
loaf row
jump we

Handwriting: Writing so that letters correctly touch the lines.

Science
Please revise the following selection of topics covered in the science
books.

Please note that we’re testing the children’s oral comprehension of

the key words and concepts, not their reading or spelling abilities. The
format will be that we will read aloud a question to the children and
they will then have to select an answer from a choice of three which
will also be read aloud to them.

There will also be some questions where students have to write free
response answers. These will be short answers and the students won’t
lose marks for incorrect spelling.

To revise, we suggest that you check your child understands:

1) The meaning of the words that you find highlighted in yellow in
the colour textbook lessons;
2) The meaning of the words found in boxes in the workbook
exercises.
3) He should also be able to orally answer the questions found in
the “lesson checkpoints” located at the end (and sometimes in
the middle) of each lesson in the textbook.

The glossary at the back of the colour science reader provides

additional definitions of keywords and may also be referred to. You
can use this in conjunction with the words you find highlighted in the
texts for additional word definitions.

Social Studies
Please revise the following selection of topics covered in the two
social studies texts: the Health & Fitness books and the For A Better
World books.
For the Health & Fitness the textbook, rather than the activity book,
contains the key information to be revised. To revise, please check
that your child understands and can orally explain the meaning of the
words that you find highlighted in yellow in the colour textbook and
that he can orally answer the questions that you find in the “review”
box at the end of each lesson.
In addition you can find keywords from each chapter defined in short
sentences in the glossary in pages 253-260 which may also help.

In the For A Better World books again it is the colour text book that is
of more use. Some of the key terms are highlighted within the
chapters.
Some questions in the exam will have multiple choice answers. Some
questions will be matching terms to definitions. Some require the
student to complete the missing word from sentences. There we will
also be some questions where students have to write free response
answers. These will be short answers and the students won’t lose marks
for incorrect spelling.
