REPORT BACK ON
OUR MEETING AT
THE LDS
FAMILY HISTORY CENTRE
PARKTOWN
SATURDAY
14 MAY 2011
Our Branch visited the LDS’s Family History Centre in Parktown. A head count revealed that
19 of our members attended this meeting. Another researcher, who is not a member of
GSSA, wrote me an e-letter and remarked: “I was quite impressed by the sudden wave of your
members into the usually quiet archive. One could really say …you made quite an impression.” This
gentleman, Mr. Gert Karg, expressed interest in our Branch and I have invited him to attend
our next meeting.
During our mid morning break Gwyneth Thomas took time to explain to us the sources
available at the FHC. She mentioned that there are 20 000 films available to us such as
microfiches containing death certificates & death notices. She told us how some of the
research materials actually came about for instance the Committee responsible for the 1820
Centenary Celebrations sent out questionnaires to all the people in the area asking pertinent
questions about their personal history and how it relates to the 1820 Settlers. The answers
were then processed and published in this book on the centenary celebrations.
Baptism records from many years back from Croatia, Germany and many different countries
around the world are also available.
If the FHC does not have the film, you may order it for a small fee and it will be for your use
for a limited period. If you pay a slightly higher price the film will remain in the FHC
indefinitely.
There are a number of completed family histories on the shelves. She invited members to
donate copies of their completed research to the library.
It is a reference library and therefore the books may not be borrowed, and are only to be used
in the library. The FHC also have a number of computers available and these are connected
permanently to the internet. You may surf the websites and search for information. There are
some websites that you would ordinarily have to pay to access; but not so at the FHC. It is
free of charge at the FHC. You may print out the information and pay for the prints only.
There are some records of the DRC and from Rhodesia.
The facilities such as the microfiche readers and computers at the FHC are well maintained
and a pleasure to use.
