At the May 18 council meeting Dar-

due to Strathmore’s new nightclub. The
noise levels have kept neighbouring
residents awake.

“Every year we do a Walk for a
Cure and this year we did epilepsy,”
said gym teacher and organizer Susan
Shearer.
“The rule of thumb is that someone
in our school population has to be af-
fected by the illness, so there are four
kids in our school with epilepsy.”
Elizabeth Bertram, also a representa-
tive from the foundation, said epilepsy
was not something that was talked
about often, and now it is time to talk
about it and give information to help
eliminate some of the fear.
“The main thing is just to bring the
awareness to everyone. So bring the
epilepsy out of its own little shad-
ow. It’s always been associated with
fear, and a lot of misconceptions and
just wholly in a myth. It was always
shrouded with a lot negativity and
stigma,” said Bertram.
“The education is the first step to
bring epilepsy into the 21st century.
Give the information, if someone has
epilepsy they should not feel isolated,
should not feel rejected or fearful to go
to school and associate it with people.”
Melathopolous has epilepsy and
said for years it was never really talked
about and the foundation realized that
wasn’t helping with anything.
“If you aren’t talking about it, how
can you help and inform people?,” said
Melathopolous.
Over two per cent of the world’s
population is affected by epilepsy. Epi-
lepsy is a brain disorder, which causes
seizures of any type, and can happen
without any cause. It can affect peo-
ple of any age, and is most common-
ly found in children. It can be scary
when someone drops into a seizure in
front of you, but there are things that
can be done to make it as safe as pos-
sible for him or her. To find tips on

High school band
returns from Disney
with four awards

Students from the Holy
Cross Collegiate, HCC, senior
high band recently returned
from their much-anticipated
trip to Anaheim. The band
paired with Notre Dame Col-
legiate, NDC, out of High
River.
“It was awesome. It was
really good, the kids had a
really good time, and they
performed really well,” said
Sarah Lyons, band director
for HCC.
“So we went as a large
group, and we performed at
the Anaheim Heritage Fes-
tival, and at the Disneyland
Park.”
The group received a
plaque for playing in park,
and also won second place
in the medium school cat-
egory as a combined band
with NDC, and second place
in the small school category
where the HCC band com-
peted as an individual band.
“So we have two second
place awards, so that was re-
ally exciting,” said Lyons.
“I was actually most excit-
ed….they give this Spirit of
Anaheim award to the school

and ours combined, we won
that award as a combined
group. The kids were just re-
ally well behaved. They were
phenomenal, just really po-
lite and respectful and excit-
ed to be there and that must
have shown to the judges.”
There were approximate-
ly 84 schools at the festival
from 32 states, and HCC and
NDC were the only ones from
Canada. Lyons said she was
really proud of them win-
ning the spirit award, even
more so than the two second
place finishes. She said while
they did great in their perfor-
mance, it was nice to see how
well behaved and mature the
students were. The judges
talked to the hotel, the bus
company and other behind-
the-scenes people who had
met the kids, to determine
which group was deserving
of the award.
“It was really busy, we
did all of our performances
in one day so that day was
pretty hectic, but then they
had a couple of days to enjoy
the parks, and go to Univer-
sal studios and Disneyland,”
said Lyons.

A lot of the kids had never
been on a plane before, so
she said it was exciting for
them. It was her program’s
first international trip. Every
three years she will offer an
international trip for band,
which will allow every stu-
dent an opportunity, while
they are in high school, to
go. She said next year they
will do something closer to
home, maybe in Edmonton
or Vancouver.
Lyons said the students
who attended the trip had a
chance to learn a lot about a
different part of the world,
while seeing how other
bands perform. Lyons said
band is more competitive in
the States, and for the stu-
dents to have a chance to see
that, and do so well in the
festival was a great experi-
ence.

This is the 34th year Strathmore High School has
celebrated its students through their Breakfast
of Champions program. Each teacher selects
a student that they feel has, in one way or an-
other, made an impact on them and the school.
Ms. Trump selected Cory Campbell a gr.10 Eng-
lish student that has had such a great attitude
throughout the year and done his very best to
excel in a subject he feels he struggles with. This
program was first put into existence to recog-
nize students and let them know that the school,
teachers and community value and appreciate all
the work they do day to day. Sobeys offers a
scholarship at the end of the year for one boy and
one girl student that has been recognized in the

Celebrating 15 years of young entrepreneurs

The Alberta Youth Entrepreneurship
camp is celebrating 15 years of entrepre-
neurial spirit in Southern Alberta.
The camp, which is sponsored by
Community Futures of Wild Rose, is en-
couraging youth aged 13-15 to apply.
Each year, four youth are sponsored
by Community Futures of Wild Rose
from this region to attend the summer
camp, which runs from August 21-27.
This week long camp is located in Ea-
gles Nest, Cypress Hills.
This is an entrepreneurial-based camp,
combining education of business train-
ing with a summer camp atmosphere.
Campers hear from guest speakers and
participate in educational workshops
to learn components of a business plan
such as: marketing, advertising, cash
flows, and record keeping.
They are then put into business teams
where their task is to plan a business
idea, meet with potential suppliers
and bankers, build the product or ser-
vice and, come the final day of camp,
sell their product. It gives the campers
hands-on experience to see what it is re-
ally like to run a business.
“I believe this camp goes beyond
academic skills though” says Jennifer
Brooks of Community Futures Wild
Rose.
Learning the basics of business is the
main focus of the camp. However, it is
not the only activity that takes place. The
youth get to participate in many summer
camp activities such as zip lining, horse-
back riding, wall climbing, mountain
biking and swimming.
Over 800 young entrepre-
neurs have gone on to start
their own businesses after at-
tending this summer camp.
About 60 youth per year at-
tend.

Priming before you paint can make a world of difference on
the outcome of your paint job. Experts recommend a prime coat
for almost every painting project.
What can be so important about priming a surface? Primers
serve two major functions: they seal porous materials so the
topcoat won’t dry with an uneven appearance and they aid the
topcoat in bonding properly with the surface underneath.
The two main types of primers are primer-sealers and
undercoaters. Unpainted surfaces, or surfaces where most of
the original paint has been removed, call for a primer sealer.
Conventional primers should be used to form a bond between
coats of paint. Know your surface and choose the primer
accordingly. For those rooms which take a lot of wear and
tear, alkyd (oil-based) primers are recommended. For drywall
surfaces, latex primers are better because they don’t raise the
naps or fibers.
For plaster surfaces, a latex or alkyd primer can be used.
Alkyd undercoats are appropriate for wood trim.
For best results when painting over wallpaper, use an alkyd
primer or alkyd primer/undercoater.
Once you have selected and applied the appropriate primer,
you are ready to paint a topcoat. And because you took the time
to prime, your finished paint job will be more attractive now and
in the future.

The reason for this letter is to respond to Mr. Sobol
and his comments in your paper on May 20 “Sweep-
ing changes on Strathmore streets.”
Gravel on the road is not a safety issue? Really? I’m
pretty sure there are a thousand motorcycle riders
in the area which may disagree. My wife and I like
to take our bikes out on nice days, and after seven
months of winter, there is a small re-learning curve
when it comes to getting on the bikes after such a

I am so fed up with town council telling us that
the average home uses 11 cubic metres of water per
month. Well how’s this for average: We are a family
of four. Two adults, two children, one a teen and one
a tween. We probably do approximately 10 loads of
laundry per week. That’s including bedding and lin-
ens. My husband is a tradesman and I work in turf
maintenance, both of which require getting very
dirty.
We hand wash most of our dishes but do run the
dishwasher twice a week.
Showers, that’s a hot issue in our house. Everybody
showers at least once per day in the morning before
school / work (as I’m sure does most everyone else).
And having a teenager requires extra shower time
monitoring! Maybe other parents can relate?
In the spring/summer I’m guessing that most kids/
adults play sports, maybe spend the day at the lake/
beach, or perhaps are outside doing yard work etc;
as do we. This will of course result in extra bathing.
Then there is outside usage. I am not serviced for
irrigation so that option is not available to me or
many of the other residents of Strathmore. I have
underground sprinklers so if I choose to water my
lawn (which obviously I don’t in the winter months,
and am limited to in the spring/summer months as
per Strathmore’s watering restrictions). I can set my
timer for a specific amount of time to water, there-
fore not overwatering. On a hot day sometimes the
kids want to run through the sprinkler or maybe
have a water fight.
All in all I’d say that we are pretty average. Well
here is what our average really is:

Guaranteed the first place I will cut out will be
my outside watering (and probably others outside
watering as well). This does not bode well for “Com-
munities in Bloom”!
I don’t fill a swimming pool, nor do I have a hot
tub. I can’t imagine what the cost will be to someone
who does! Or to someone who has a large family.
My sister and her husband were away for the entire
month of February and somehow still managed to
use 19 cubic metres with only two people living in
the home in January.
Incidentally, I used only 51 cubic metres of water
yet my Sewer Levy alone was $188.12. Starting May 1
the Water Consumption rate will be increased to the
same amount as the Sewer Levy.
I would be curious to hear from other average ho-
meowners in town to see how average they are and
how the rate increases have affected them.
I understand that the rate structure is based on a
“user pay” logic and if you use, you pay. However,
what I can not fathom is that my family is anything
but the average user!
I have to wonder if there is actually anyone who
only uses 11 cubic metres of water per month. And
if there is; hats off to you! I don’t know how you do
it raising a family.

DUC’s Strathmore Banquet set for June 4

Ducks Unlimited Canada
Tickets for DUC’s Strathmore Banquet are going
fast! If you love the outdoors and want to have
a fun, social evening while supporting a good
cause, mark your calendars for June 4.
This is the 29th annual fundraising banquet for
the Strathmore Chapter.
According to Art Harris, Co-Chair of the Strath-
more DU Committee, area banquets are put on
to raise money for DUC’s programs, and 80 cents
from every dollar raised goes directly to habitat
conservation and research.
“The remaining money is spent on education
and raising more money to continue on-the-
ground conservation work,” says Harris. “It’s a
great opportunity for people in the area to work
work here at home, and across Alberta.”
At this year’s Strathmore Banquet, attendees will
dine on a great meal, and have the opportunity to
bid on silent and live auction items, and purchase
raffle tickets for DUC merchandise. Folks will also
learn about DUC’s work in their area.
The Strathmore Chapter Committee, made up of
residents from Strathmore and Wheatland Coun-
ty area, has raised a whopping $1,049,177 since
1983 for DUC’s conservation of wetlands, water-
fowl and associated habitats to date. There are
currently 60 DUC projects within a 50 km radius
of Strathmore, conserving over 28,585 acres of
wetland and upland habitat – 16,641 acres upland,
and over 11,944 acres wetland projects.
So continue the tradition and secure yourself a

Council asks for help,

Councillor Rocky Blokland opened
up with a statement asking residents to
have patience, consideration, and un-
derstanding about some of the issues
the Town is currently dealing with. He
also stated that it’s pretty good here in
Strathmore, compared to some of the
issues other communities are dealing
with, for example, Slave Lake.
Councillor Dave Hamilton suggested
a venue for the public to make dona-
tions, and said they are looking to gath-
er donations for Slave Lake through the
Red Cross or Salvation Army. Hamilton
said kitchen utensils are an item des-
perately needed. Administration at the
town office will collect the donations
and will keep the public updated as to
what has been gathered.
Lambert Centre
upgrades
In 2010 engineering and operations
staff for the town were asked to con-
duct a building envelope assessment of
the Lambert Centre. Reed Jones Christ-
offerson Engineering conducted the as-
sessment. Lambert Centre houses the
library, Happy Gang and Wheatland
Family and Community Support Ser-
vices. The report identified water infil-
tration through the skylights, windows,
and doors, as well as various additional
penetrations throughout the building.
In the 2010 fall workshop, $80,000
was approved to be used for repairs,
and to help eliminate the water coming
into the building.
“We’re concerned with the amount
of water and mildew smell, and there
was minor evidence of mould in the
building,” said Chuck Renkas, project
coordinator for the Town.
“Once the building envelope assess-
ment was completed by Reed Jones
Christofferson Engineering out of Cal-
gary, it was determined that we do
have a water infiltration problem in the
building.”
Tenders were put out and SIS, Sup-
ply Install Systems, was awarded the
tender for a total of $52,681.65. Con-
struction is to be completed prior to
the Heritage Days long weekend. The
building will still be open to the public,
though sections will be closed off as
repairs are being made.
Land sale

a motion that would see land sold in
the industrial area of Strathmore. Ad-

Councillor Bob Sobol said the town
is now at a point of being able to pro-
ceed with an agreement to purchase
and sell. Sobol made a motion autho-
rizing Stanford and Mayor Steve Grajc-
zyk to sign the agreement on behalf of
the town, and that the legal land de-
scriptions which are missing from the
agreement to be included. The motion
was carried.
RCMP
additional staffing
The town has requested the addition
of one regular member to the Strath-
more and District RCMP detachment
for 2012/2013. The request doesn’t ob-
ligate the town in any way to add an
additional member, but if they don’t
write the letter requesting additional
resources, they will lose the opportu-
nity.
“We did forego our anticipated ad-
ditional member for 2010/2011 due to
budgetary restraints. It was with reluc-
tance that we did so, but it had to do
with budgetary restraints,” said Sobol.
“The fact remains, this town is con-
tinuing to grow, and as a council, it’s
imperative that we recognize the fact
that as the town grows, with it grows
the level of crime. That’s just a sad fact
of life and I would strongly support
that we put in for an additional mem-
ber for 2012/2013, which would obvi-
ously be further discussed at budgetary
talks.”
He moved that the town sign a let-
ter of intent, indicating their desire to
add a member to the detachment for
2012/2013
Downtown Park
is named
A name has finally been decided
upon for the centennial park project.
The centennial committee submitted
a request to the names advisory com-
mittee for the park, located between
109 and 115 Second Ave. An electronic
poll was given to the members of the
names advisory committee with four

voted in favour of naming the park,

Raising funds in a new way

A new kind of trade show will be
at the Quonset on the Strathmore and
District Agricultural Society grounds
on June 4. The trade show will be fea-
turing home-based businesses, while
raising money for a worthy cause: Re-
lay for Life.
“Last year I guess was not a very
good year for Relay for Life, so they’re
trying to bring it back to the commu-
nity,” said Kristel Lang, who is organiz-
ing the event.
“I thought this would be another
good way, a fundraiser for them, but
also a good way to showcase different
businesses that we have here in town.”
Lang has also brought in the help of
Melissa David, of Quality Dog Groom-
ing, who recently finished working on
Strathmore’s first Pet Expo.
“Basically, she just asked because
we had done the Pet Expo and we’ve
made some great contacts with home
based businesses,” said David.
“We’ve had such great local support,
that I was able to pass along some
of my contacts and even call some of
them up. Everyone was just awesome
and like, ‘yeah lets do this’. Qual-
ity Dog Grooming ourselves, we love
helping do stuff like this and so we’re
like tell us what we can do and how
we can do it.”
There is one little hitch to the date,
but both women are sure it can be a
benefit and not a downside.
“We do realize that it’s the same day
as Spring Fest but we’re hoping that’s
a positive. We’re hoping that people
will just kind of do everything at
once,” said David
There were only 21 teams registered
with the Relay for Life and Lang said
the goal this year is to have 25 teams
and raise $100,000.
“My personal goal is $2,500 for the
day,” said Lang.
“I think everyone, when they find
out the cause it’s for, is completely
happy about being involved.”

2011
The 15th annual Festival of Music 2011 was a great
success, with almost 40 performers of all ages. This
event was held at the Alliance Church on May 19.

Citizens on Patrol is looking for more
volunteers to help lend an extra set of
eyes to the RCMP and help keep Strath-
more safe. They are a group of citizen
volunteers who go out into the com-
munity and patrol anywhere and every-
where around town, reporting suspi-
cious activity to the RCMP.
“Essentially they give us an extra set
of eyes out running around the neigh-
bourhood,” said Cnst. Keith Anderson,
with the Strathmore RCMP.
Anderson is the RCMP liaison for Citi-
zens on Patrol, and his role is to pro-
vide them with information and assis-
tance where he can.
“The group itself is entirely citizen
run and the RCMP doesn’t directly run
it,” said Anderson.
The patrol group are just observers,
and are not out there to actively inter-
vene with crimes. They are out there to
just keep an eye on the community and
let the RCMP know if they see anything
amiss.
Citizens on Patrol has been in Strath-
more for many years, but is currently
going through a reinvigoration due to
a turn over in the personnel and new
people becoming interested.
“For quite a few years it was relative-
ly dormant. Even though the group still
existed, they weren’t terribly active but
their activity has picked up again,” said
Anderson.
“We have people interested again,
and they’re getting out and doing their
patrols.”
Citizens on Patrol are always looking
for volunteers. The commitment, said
Anderson, is they come out and get a
little bit of information about the pro-
gram. They will get basic training as to
how to document their observations

At 1:40 a.m. on March 22 a fire raged through a home at the corner of Bri-
arwood Road and Briarwood Crescent in Strathmore. Four neighbouring homes were
evacuated for the safety of the occupants due to the severity of the fire and wind
direction. The occupants of the residence where the fire started were not
home at the time. A second residence next to the first, was damaged by the
fire.

The Crowfoot 4-H Multi Club is wind-
ing down by having their Achievement
Day on May 14th. We were very fortu-
nate this year to be able to have it at the
Strathmore Ag Grounds. We had all the
displays in the Quonset and the mem-
bers were able to put on both Dog Agil-
ity demos as well as an Archery demo
in the Lammle’s building. We contin-
ued with awards and amazing pot luck.
There was enough chilli there that next
year maybe the adults need to compete
in a chilli cook-off, just a thought.
We were blessed to have a special
guest, 4-H’s Cleaver. For those who
do not know, Cleaver is our province’s
4-H mascot. Jason Wilson from Glei-
chen did an amazing job helping us
out, thinking he had one little boy who
thought he was more than amazing.

bers, their families and anyone else
who has contributed to our club this
year, we could not have had such a suc-
cessful year without all of you.
This year we also awarded members
with 100% attendance awards (this was

Strathmore Girl Guides
Two young ladies from the Strath-
more Girl Guides are nearing gradua-
tion from this wonderful organization.
Both have nearly completed a very spe-
cial award called the Lady Baden-Pow-
ell award. (She was the wife of Lord
Baden-Powell who started Scouts and
she was a strong supporter and orga-
nizer of Guides).
Each girl was asked to describe Girl
Guides to those who are not familiar
with the program. Here is a glimpse of
what they had to say;
songs. Sometimes we go to camps with
Guides from other units.
Learning about Lord and Lady Baden-
Powell is an important thing in Guides.
Lord Baden-Powell’s sister started
Guides. You’ll learn more if you join!
Badges are little crests you earn to
recognize that you did certain activities.
There are a lot to earn. Most go on your
sash, but some go on a camp blanket.
To earn badges you must complete a
certain amount of activities to complete
them.
Now we also have parties! We have a
Christmas party and a Halloween party!
At the parties we do games and crafts.
We also have a snack.
We also have camps: day camps and
overnight camps. The camps usually
teach us interesting stuff. At day camps
you have a snack and lunch. We do
games and learning activities. At over-
night camps we play games and do
crafts. We also do learning activities.
After meals, that we cook ourselves, we
have to do dishes.
These are just some of the things we
do at Guides. I hope you join!

Hi, my name is Mackenzie. I am from
the Strathmore First Girl Guides. In my
seven years of Girl guiding I have never
gotten tired of it.
Once a week we meet to do games,
crafts, and fun activities. Sometimes we
even cook. We learn about culture and
lives of Guides around the world. Na-
ture walks and making board games
are just some of the things we do in
guides.
Sometimes when we play the games
or activities we earn badges. Badges
are little crests that we earn when we
do certain things. We earn badges like
fire safety, first aid and camping.
Camping is an important part of being
a Girl Guide. There are day camps and
overnight camps. You can cook, learn
about safety and make new friends.
Cookie selling is another important
part of Guiding. We sell the cook-
ies around Strathmore in the fall and
spring. The money that comes from the
cookies goes for camping and crafts.

The school year is almost over and
that means it’s almost time for three
German students attending Holy Cross
Collegiate, HCC, to head home. Alena
von der Mehden and Marc Schneider-
meier have been in Strathmore since
August, opting to spend a full school
year at HCC. Friederilce Kobel has
been here since the end of January.
“I came here to learn English and
because of the landscape, because I
heard Canada was very beautiful,” said
von der Mehden.
“I thought if I was only here for half
year I wouldn’t learn the language as
much as I did.”
“My main reason…I just wanted to
go somewhere else for like half a year
or something,” said Kobel.
“I decided Canada because I wanted
an English-speaking country and just
the landscape. I imagined it’s so beau-
tiful and it is.”
She said she kind of wishes she was
staying a year but then would have to

Geocaching – the worldwide treasure
hunt with GPS – has grown immensely
over the past eleven years with now more
than 1.3 million caches hidden around
the world.
Enthusiasts load coordinates for indi-
vidual caches from www.geocaching.
com onto their GPS devices and head
outdoors for the adventure of finding the
caches. With this many people involved
in the hobby, tourist organizations are
now utilizing the sport to highlight their
attractions, Alberta’s Canadian Badlands
Ltd. and Boomtown Trail are no excep-
tion. In fact, this summer, Three Hills will
be the centre of the geocaching universe
with people from all over North America,
Europe and Australia attending a major
geocaching event and exhibit!
On Saturday, July 16, 2011, Three Hills
will host the Best of the Bad Mega Event
(WestCan1)! Held at the Centennial Are-
na and Prairie Bible College campus, this
full day event will consist of seminars,
specialty geocaching related vendors,
kids’ activities, a BBQ dinner, entertain-
ment, and much more.
In addition to the July 16th Mega, sev-
eral smaller ‘satellite’ events are being
held through the preceding week all over
the Canadian Badlands and hundreds of
new caches will be hidden to draw at-
tention to the region’s many wonders
and attractions. Besides giving attendees
the opportunity to explore the Canadi-
an Badlands through geocaching, these
events facilitate the building of commu-
nity between cachers from all over the
globe.
The Best of the Bad Mega Event is
Western Canada’s first geocaching mega.
The organizers are working together to
create a geocaching and Western Canadi-
an legacy, hoping to see WestCan become
an annual affair in Western Canada, host-
ed by a different community each year.
However, Three Hills is where it’s at
this summer in the geocaching world as
it also plays host to a traveling educa-
tional GPS exhibit! This ‘GPS Adventures
Canada Maze,’ prominently features Al-
berta’s Canadian Badlands and will em-
bark on a Canadian tour starting in Three

Unearthing pieces of history

Spring is here and once again stu-
dents from the University of Calgary
archaeology field school are digging up
the past in Siksika Nation at the Clu-
ny Earth Lodge Village. The Village is
located directly west of the Blackfoot
Crossing Historical Park Interpretive
Centre.
“We’re working at a site called the
Cluny site, which is the only known
prehistoric fortified village on the Ca-
nadian plains, so it’s a very important
site,” said Dr. Dale Walde Associate Pro-
fessor for the Department of Archaeol-
ogy at the University of Calgary.
The site represents a settlement area
established around 1740 to 1742, and
historical evidence shows the people
may have come from the Mandan tribes.
Excavations have been done in 1875,
1881, 1911 and the University of Cal-
gary began sending their field school to
the site in 2007.
Dr. Brain Kooyman, the head of the
department at the time, took the field
school out the first time. Walde has been
running the field school ever since.
Every year the pits are covered back
up, and every year the new students un-
cover them before beginning with the
new excavation. A fair number of the
senior students come back and help su-
pervise the junior students and work on
their own projects.

ing there was a palisade wall all the
way around the site, but what the lat-
est excavations are suggesting is there
are different kinds of structures, and it
may be something they have never seen
before.
“We don’t like to open up a whole
bunch of sites, in part because it’s very
important that you save portions of the
site for future investigators,” said Walde.
He said they are of course digging
up lots of arrowheads, bison bones and
lots of dogs. He said if people think
of the local culture at the time, which
they call the Old Women’s Phase, it was
probably Blackfoot people. Walde said
they don’t find a lot of dogs in Black-
foot sites, and in the Cluny site they
have found a lot of dog bones, which
indicates the people who built the site
weren’t Blackfoot.
“We see the remains of fortifications.
We’re finding the remains of the posts
that helped make up fortification,” said
Walde.
“We’re exploring the form of the for-
tification ditch and some of the pits,
we’re doing a really detailed topo-
graphic study there, and we’re coming
up with a lot of pottery that the people
made which is unique to that particular
culture.”
The students, Walde and Lance Evans,
a teacher’s assistant, started their exca-
vation on May 12, and will be at the
site Monday to Thursday until the end
of June. Every year something new and

“It’s a rare privilege that I am able
to spend my whole life doing it,” said
Walde.
“I don’t get bored with it at all. That
site, because it’s unique, it’s the only
one, every time I go out I find some-
thing that I’ve never seen before, which
for at my age is pretty exciting.”
The field school is not a mandatory
course, though it is recommended, and
is often the first real experience the stu-
dents have in archaeology.
“It’s all new, we’ve never done any-
thing that was real, you’re all nervous
you’re going to screw something up,”
said Kaelyn Michayluk, a junior student.
Michayluk is interested in Mezzo
America, in the basin of Mexico, study-
ing the Aztec and the Mayan.
Gina Carroll has been interested in
archaeology since she was five-years-
old, and as she grew older she real-
ized there is a wide variety of things to
study in the field.

I’ve always enjoyed Archaeology
for a great many reasons. I’ve always
found that the study of ancient cul-
tures and history is enlightening and
entertaining, and I have always found
ancient relics to be of particular inter-
est. I’ve encountered ancient objects
over the years, such as arrowheads
and coins, and have enjoyed research-
ing the history behind the object and
learning how and why it was made.
In starting field school, I am find-
ing myself doing that exact thing, but
on a far more precise and grandiose
scale. I, along with my colleagues,
have begun digging and excavating
the site and we have already found a
variety of objects (charcoal, seashell,
hearths, etc) that are helping recreate
the population and people who lived
there so many years ago.
This week was one of learning
the basic methods and practices of
archaeology, such as proper trowel
technique and how to make the units
precise and perfect. For me, it has
been a time of great learning and cor-
rection. My corners at the start were
rounded, my pits were uneven, and
my use of the other tools has been
shoddy at best.
It has been a start however, and

“This is what we’re hoping to do so
it’s good to get the experience,” said
Ryan Jevons, another junior student.
He intends to do forensic work with
the police, and admits it’s kind of a
jump. Archaeology covers the culture
and the region and he said it’s impor-
tant for people to know and understand
their history.
“It’s messy but it’s fun so far,” said
Adam Brousseau, another junior stu-
dent.
The students are excited for the ex-
perience, and look forward to spending
the next few weeks playing in the dirt.
The items excavated will be studied fur-
ther at the university, but the artifacts
will eventually make their way back to
Blackfoot Crossing. People are invited
to head down to the centre and see the
excavation taking place.

The first full week of field school
was intense but fantastic. I have never
been so happily exhausted in my life!
There was certainly a huge learning
curve at the beginning with getting
used to the trowel and taking mea-
surements accurately and quickly.
After our first day of actual exca-
vation, Dr. Walde told us that the
minimum expected, when working in
consulting, is three levels a day which
seemed incredibly insurmountable!
By Thursday though, myself and an-
other member of my team (the Screen
Machines) had done four levels in the
course of the day, including interrup-
tions for brush clearing.
I had sterile levels that day, mean-
ing no artifacts or features or any-
thing were found, so it was definitely
easier to achieve the level mark and
also helped me get used to using the
trowel correctly. There were a few
groups that came to tour the site as
well, which is pretty neat since they
get excited and interested to see what
we are finding. Makes it more excit-
ing for us too! Overall an amazing
first week! Lucky, since this was sort
of a make or break, whether or not I
was on the right career path!

After reports were released
about horses contracting the
Equine Neurological Herpes
Virus, EHV-1, rodeos all over
the province have been shut
down, including Strathmores
high school’s event this past
weekend.
“It showed up within the last
couple of weeks and it came
to light on Tuesday (May 17)
that this virus was around,”
said Strathmore and District
High School Rodeo Associa-
tion President Dan Dowler.
“There was a horse down
in Southern Alberta that con-
tracted this virus and then, of

Jumphouse Gymnastics recently sent some
of their pre-competitive athletes to their first
two competitions.
“This is the first time we’ve actually tak-
en our pre-comps to a couple of fun meets,
just to kind of give them the idea of what
it’s all about,” said Tara Smith, head coach for
the Strathmore Silhouettes and co-owner of
Jumphouse Gymnastics
“They had a great time, and they did really
well. It’s always great to see how they’re go-
ing to do under pressure because it’s different
than just training day in and day out.”
Smith said the experience and the exposure
were two of the biggest reasons the girls had
gone, as well as getting a chance to see what
they have to work towards. Smith said the
girls are pumped, excited and eager to learn
and improve after attending the meets.
The same five girls were at both meets.
Jumphouse Gymnastics has provincial level
one to provincial level three gymnasts in the
club, and the girls that went are juniors, not
quite provincial level one.
“In my eyes, it gave them that exposure to

Strathmore Motocross racer Jared Petruska hit the track again May 14 and 15 for the Southern Alberta
Race in Calgary.

Last year, Jared Petruska won the
Bronze Boot at the Western Canadian
Amateur Nationals. The Bronze Boot is
the highest award that can be won by
an amateur Canadian motocross racer.
However, following a broken collar-
bone and a hurt shoulder, Petruska was
forced to take a year off to heal.
Petruska returned to the sport, healthy
and motivated, when he attended the
Southern Alberta race that was held in
Calgary in the second week of May.

When asked what his goals were for
the season, Petruska said “I want to
make it into the top ten of the pro race.”
Petruska has been racing for quite
some time.
“I’ve been doing it all my life” he said.
His hopes and plans for the future are
to make motocross his career. Despite
setbacks like injuries and extended time
off, Petruska has many goals set for
himself in the near future.
This Strathmore native plans to make
his dreams become a reality.

The high school track and field meet took place
at Strathmore High School on May 18. Students
from Standard, Siksika and Holy Cross Collegiate
took part in the meet. Competitors were looking
for a spot in the zone meet, which took place May
25 in Calgary. Results from zones were not avail-

Colpoys, Esme
1920 ~ 2011
Esme passed away peacefully
on Friday, May 20, 2011 in
Calgary, aged 90. Esme is
survived by her nieces and nephews: Donna
(Wayne), Pat (Ken), John, Henry (Mary Ann),
Colleen (Keith), Nina and Victoria (Dan).
She is also survived by many great-nieces
and nephews. Esme was predeceased by
her parents, Harry and Ada Colpoys, sister,
Dorothy (Earl) Harwood, brothers: Gerald
Colpoys, Jack (Virginia) Colpoys and Victor
(Mamie) Colpoys. Esme was born and
raised in the Namaka area. She attended
Hammerhill School and from there worked on
the family farm. After her parents moved to
Gleichen, Esme remained and continued as a
homemaker for her brothers until she moved
to Gleichen in the early 60’s. Esme remained
in Gleichen and cared for her brother Gerald
until his passing in 2007. She moved to
Strathmore Lodge and then on to Mayfair
Centre until her passing. Funeral Service
will be held in the Chapel of Mountain View
Funeral Home on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at
10:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the Garden

his loyal friend Max. Jacob was predeceased

camping, reading crime novels, playing
