As the introduction to a four-year cycle of shows, the XVIII
Rohkunstbau is highlighting the subject of power in its 2011
summer exhibition – in a free interpretation taking Wagner's
”Ring of the Nibelung” as its point of reference. ”The Rhine
gold” with its seeds of conflict in unrequited love and an
overwhelming desire for power defines the context of the to-
pics explored in the first part of the Rohkunstbau Ring.
In today's society, the idea of power tends to have a ne-
gative connotation, and is generally associated with a craving
for power, suppression, manipulation or even avarice. Hard-
ly any other concept has been discussed and interpreted in
such conflicting ways. The French philosopher Foucault, for
example, who considered power to be ʻproductive capacityʼ,
saw it as a principle of development and integration in our
society and, hence, as a practical principle.
The Rohkunstbau arts festival has a long established
tradition of presenting site-specific contemporary art. This
summer it has once again brought together a group of inter-
national artists to present their works to an interested au-
dience at a location outside the mainstream art scene.
Art Today Association was established in 1997 as a non-
governmental organization. We established the Center for
Contemporary Art Plovdiv, situated in the Ottoman Bath
premises - a unique monument of culture from the 16th
century with a specific interior.
Our mission is to present and document alternative and
experimental forms of contemporary art; to build an infor-
mational multimedia data base presenting contemporary
authors; to prepare periodical and unique print materi-
als; to host artists and curators in residence; to implement
training programs, workshops and conferences for different
target groups.

(ACSL) YEREVAN
”Art and Cultural Studies Laboratory” (ACSL) is an independent,
non-governmental organization providing a stable platform for cri-
tical analysis, reflections, open discussions, information exchange
and interactive communication, which would contribute to the de-
velopment of contemporary creative processes by setting up exhibi-
tions, discursive events, and educational programmes. ACSL promo-
tes the development of Armenia as a zone of cultural dialogue and
meeting place with its current situation as a post-Soviet country and
its contextual and ideological issues. In 2008, ACSL established the
”Art Commune” International AIRprogramme as an artist residency
and projects workshops in Armenia. The programme can be con-
sidered as one of the major hubs of ACSL’s international and local
activities incorporating promotion and analysis of contemporary art
practices.

From 2003 onwards, GeoAIR organizes and supports internatio-
nal exchange projects with the goal of strengthening the Georgian
and Caucasian art world, bringing together artists from different
cultural backgrounds and finding relevant contexts for them to work
in. GeoAIR works together with international individuals and orga-
nizations that share same goals.
Since January 2010, GeoAIR runs an Art Residency programme in
Tbilisi, Georgia. This is a self-directed residency programme, that
offers artists and curators the opportunity to base themselves in
Tbilisi, Georgia, and use this location as a starting point to build
networks, meet artists, curators, get to know cultural institutions
from the Caucasus region.
In 2007 GeoAIR initiated the ‘Archidrome’ Contemporary Art Ar-
chive. ‘Archidrome’ serves as a presentation room where artists’
talks, meetings, discussions and presentations take place ‘Archid-
rome’ invites local as well as foreign artist for presentations and
lectures that concern the cultural events in the Caucasus region.

The Heinrich-Boell-Stiftung Brandenburg e.V. was foun-
ded in 1990 as an educational institution affiliated with the
Green Party and is located in Potsdam/Germany. Since then,
the foundation organizes and promotes events of political
and cultural education with the objective of supporting de-
mocratic decision-making processes and socio-political en-
gagement on regional, supraregional and international level.
In cooperation with various partners from Eastern Europe,
the foundation coordinates the ‘Atlantis’ artist network and
administrates the ‘Rohkunstbau’ exhibition, an international
contemporary art festival at Schloss Marquardt.
SPACE, founded in 1999 as a non-profit gallery, covers
several independent projects focusing on presentation of
contemporary art both in Slovakia and abroad, residency
programmes, public art projects and publication activities.
SPACE is an initiative for presentation of artists who syste-
matically question common communication strategies and
break formal and contextual structure of an artwork stres-
sing the importance of innovation and experiment. SPACE’s
central mission is to create an interactive space for the com-
munication between the audience and contemporary art
and to initiate international cooperation and exchange.
