First Loggerhead nest

By Mary Pringle

T
urtle nesting season began earlier than
usual in South Carolina this year, so it
was not a surprise when tracks were
found on Monday, May 16, in Dewees Inlet.
Sixty-three other nests and twenty non-

to the nesting database at www.seaturtle.
org by that date. This first nest was laid on
the recently accreted sand known as the
Cedar Creek Spit which is the very end of
the Isle of Palms beach, and the tracks were
reported by a resident of Seagrass Lane in
Wild Dunes.
The Turtle Team responded to the call
and members were pleased to find that 136
eggs had been laid there. Since the nest was
located in a flood-prone and current-prone
area, the nest was relocated to 31st Avenue
where they should hatch toward the middle
of July. We are hoping for many more nests
as the season progresses.
Each year a different set of individual
loggerheads comes ashore and lays about
two to five nests each at two week intervals.
Each turtle will lay multiple nests in one
