FOURTH SEMESTER B.E DEGREE END SEMESTER EXAMINATION – DECEMBER, 2008

SUB: ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS IV ( MAT – ELE – 202)

(REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM)
Time : 3 Hrs. Max.Marks : 50

" Note : a) Answer any FIVE full questions.

b) All questions carry equal marks.

1A. Suppose that four digits 1,2,3 and 4 are written down in random order . What is
the probability that at least one digit will occupy its proper place?

1B. Solve :
–2x + 10y – 2z = 154
–2x – y + 10z = 120
10x – 2y – 3z = 205 by Relaxation method.

1C. Find Fourier transform of

⎪⎧a − x for x <a ∞ 2
⎛ sin t ⎞
f (x) = ⎨ . Hence deduce that ∫ ⎜ ⎟ dt = π .
⎪⎩ 0 for x >a>0 0⎝
t ⎠ 2

2A. Solve by Gauss- Seidel method correct to four decimal places

10x1 – 2x2 – x3 – x4 = 3
–x1 – x2 + 10x3 – 2x4 = 27
–2x1 + 10x2 – x3 – x4 = 15
–x1 – x2 – 2x3 + 10x4 = –9
Carry out four iterations.

2B. Starting with total probability theorem, state and prove the Baye’s theorem.

2C. Using z – transform, solve : yn+2 + 6yn+1 + 9yn = 2n , y0 = y1 = 0.

3A. Two factories produce identical clocks. The product of the first factory consists of
10,000 clocks of which 100 are defective. The second factory produces 20,000
clocks of which 300 are defective. What is the probability that a particular
defective clocks was produced by the second factory?

3B. Find the eigen values and the eigen vectors of the matrix A, where

⎡ 6 −2 2 ⎤
A = ⎢⎢ −2 3 −1⎥⎥
⎣⎢ 2 −1 3 ⎥⎦
Also find the eigen vectors of A −1

3C. In a bombing action there is 50% chance that a bomb will strike the target. Two
direct hits are needed to destroy the target completely. Estimate the minimum
number of bombs to be dropped to give 99% or better chance of completely
destroying the target.

4A. The diameter of an electric cable, say, X is assumed to be continuous

random variable with pdf f(x) = 6x (1 – x), 0 <x < 1.

B 47 12 16 42 4 51 37 48 13 0
Who is more consistent ? Who is better score getter?
