METHOD STATEMENT FOR LOW STRAIN

PILE INTEGRITY TESTING

1.0 INTRODUCTION

TONG WOO E&C CO., Ltd and ASIA PILE TESTING SERVICES (M) SDN BHD our
sub-contractor sister company on Bored Piling works is proposing to conduct integrity
testing on the cast-in-situ piles as required in the specification. The company is utilizing
the Pile Integrity Tester (PIT-Collector) which conforms to the ASTM D5882-96 Low
Strain Integrity Testing of Piles.

This company is specializing in dynamic methods for non-destructive pile testing. The
main objective in the testing is to provide the client / consultants information about the:
a) Physical dimensions
b) Pile continuity
c) Consistency of material

2.0 TEST EQUIPMENT

The test is performed using digital data acquisition equipment called the PIT-Collector

The PIT-Collector has the ability for signal conditioning and power supply with a high
signal-to-noise ratio to enhance the reflected signals for long piles and/or high friction
piles, which may otherwise dampen the reflected signal.

The equipment is able to display the data obtained from the field immediately for a
quality evaluation of the pile. The same data is stored such that additional processing or
further wave analysis is possible.

The equipment is able to average several blows such that the diagnosis is based on a
“typical record”. This averaging technique tends to negate any noise or random signals in
any particular blow while enhancing the effects of the relevant repetitive response.

3.0 TEST PROCEDURE

Low strain integrity testing should only be carried out on cast-in-situ piles after 7 days or
more from the data of pile casting unless otherwise approved.

The contractor shall ensure that the pile head shall be clean, free from water, laitance,
loose concrete, over spilled concrete and blinding concrete and be readily accessible for
the purpose of testing by the specialist engineer.

An area on the pile head is cleaned and the accelerometer (which is connected to the PIT-
Collector) is attached onto the pile by an adhesive medium (Vaseline or grease). A hand
Held rubber tip hammer is impacted on to the pile top to generate a “low strain”
compressive impact wave.

The PIT-Collector will graphically display the velocity records.

4.0 TEST PREPARATION

For cast in place piles, integrity testing shall not be performed on the pile until the
concrete has cured for a minimum of seven (7) days unless otherwise approved by the
engineer.

The pile head shall be free from water, dirt or other debris. The concrete at the pile top
surface must be flat or level and have sufficient space for attachment of the sensing
device and impact area.

The engineer prior to pile installation shall specify the number, type and location of piles
for testing. Additional piles may be selected for testing at the discretion of the engineer if
circumstances or after pile installation should make a piles integrity suspect.

5.0 RESULT PRESENTATION

The testing engineer will have a minimum of three (3) days after performing a test to
provide the final test results and integrity evaluation.

As a minimum for each pile tested, the averaged, amplified velocity vs. time record
should be included in the report. Additional plots and analysis can be included as required
or suggested by the testing engineer. The experiences test engineer shall discuss each
record summarizing in a table his diagnosis. This diagnosis may be used based on the
appearance of a typical record.

6.0 DATA INTERPRETATION AND REPORTING

An engineer shall carry out the interpretation of the test records with at least 3 years
experience in dynamic pile testing. Major faults existing within the effective length shall
be quickly identified and made known.

A full report shall be prepared within 7 days from the completion of testing. The report
shall include the plotted results and the specialist interpretation.

7.0 ACCEPTANCE AND REJECTION

Shafts with only insignificant reflections other than the pile toe and with a clear pile toe
reflection may be accepted. Where no clear toe reflection is apparent, the experience test
engineer shall state to which depth the test appears to be conclusive. Where significant
reflection from location above the pile toe is observed, the test engineer must attempt a
quantification of the irregularity. If such reflection indicates a significant pile impedance
reduction, the pile must be rejected. If the record is complex, the results may be deemed
questionable. Construction records (concrete usage, grout pressure records, soil boring)
may be valuable in results interpretation or additional numerical analysis modeling may
be used to quantify the record.
8.0 REMEDIAL ACTION

Rejected or questionable piles may be replaced. Questionable piles may be subjected to

further testing, e.g. static load testing, dynamic load testing, core drilling, beta-ray
logging, etc. remedial action may include pressure grouting through core holes. If the pile
top appears questionable, further pile top cut-off and resting may be advisable. If majority
of piles diagnose as “questionable”, complete pile excavation or other test may be
necessary for pile acceptance.

9.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE

As a professional specialist-testing firm, Asia Pile Testing Services (M) Sdn Bhd shall
engage experienced test engineers for the actual field-testing. He shall be able to interpret
the data obtained by the PIT-Collector, which in turn shall enable the consultant to make
a quick decision on the acceptability of the piles tested on the site.

The company is committed to achieving high quality results. As such, the test engineer
shall ensure that quality data is obtained on site to enable a good interpretation of test
results. Reviews and re-analysis of the data shall be carried out prior to final reporting
