Course Overview *
In a typical high school science program, students take the science course sequence of biology, followed by
chemistry and then physics. Did you know that this pattern of courses was originally designed in 1893?
Much more is known about the relationship among physics, biology, and chemistry in our present day. We
now know that an understanding of the atomic structure and molecules (chemistry) depends on a
knowledge of energy storage and transfer (physics). In turn, knowledge of living systems, the subject of
biology, depends on understanding chemical bonding and reaction energies. In light of contemporary
scientific developments it makes logical sense to reverse the typical pattern of high school science courses
by introducing students to physics first, followed by chemistry and then culminate with biology which
relies on the previous two disciplines.
Beginning with the freshman in 2011 , the sciences will be sequenced to provide this greater coherence .
The emphasis will be on learning science through experimental methodology. Freshmen will take physics,
which will better prepare them to study chemistry during their sophomore year. Biology will be taken
during the junior year. Seniors will choose a science elective (which may include advanced placement
courses in one of the sciences) such as astrophysics, neurobiology, or organic chemistry. The science
program for Starry Night High School includes a physics course taught every year, concurrent with a
second science course. Example: Grade 9- Physics I (conceptual physics) & Earth and Space, Grade 10-
MIT Physics 8.01 w/ Professor Lewin & Chemistry I, Grade 11- MIT Physics 8.02 w/ Professor Lewin &
Biology, Grade 12- MIT Physics 8.03 w/ Professor Lewin & Students Choice.
This is a high expectation for science with our student(s). Regardless of the pursuits in University, it is

Energy and Thermodynamics
Students delve more deeply into physics in this unit. They begin by studying problems in
work and energy, using simple machines as a starting point. They then move into a
related study—thermodynamics, the study of heat. Along the way students do
laboratories on using a lever and the flow of heat. Energy is the key word in this lesson
and students gain a lot of experience in using this term correctly.
