CONTENIDOS Y CONTEXTUALIZACIÓN

THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE

USE: The simple past tense is used to describe events that happened at a specific
moment in the past. In the case of ‘to be’, it refers to a condition or a state in the past.
Due to the way they work, English verbs could be classified into three large groups: the
verb 'to be' would form a first group by itself, the so-called regular and irregular verbs
(play, work, love, do, go, give, etc.) would form a second group, and a third group
constituted by modal verbs or verbs of incomplete conjugation (can, could, may, might,
etc.). Notice how the past of “to be” is made in a different way from the past tense of
other verbs.

E2 2021-3 Workshop No. 1: The simple Past Tense

Notice how a conversation about the past can be expressed only with “to be” and how
the same conversation can be expressed with other verbs, without altering its original
meaning.
THE PAST OF ‘TO BE’ – CONVERSATION
Carlos: Hi, Jenny. How was your weekend?
Jenny: It was nice. I was at my brother’s
birthday party last Saturday.
Carlos: Really? How was it?
Jenny: It was great. All my close relatives
were there. The food, the drinks and the
cake were delicious. Everyone was happy.
How about you? How was your weekend?
Carlos: Nothing special. I was at home with
my pet all the weekend.

THE PAST WITH REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS – CONVERSATION

Carlos: Hi, Jenny. Did you have a nice
weekend?
Jenny: yes, I did. I went to my brother’s
birthday party last Saturday.
Carlos: Really? Tell me all about it. Did you
have a good time?
Jenny: Sure. All my close relatives got together
there. We had delicious food and drinks and a
cake, too. Everyone enjoyed the party. How
about you? Did you do anything special last
weekend?
Carlos: I didn’t do anything special. I stayed home with my pet all the weekend.

REGULAR VERBS VERSUS IRREGULAR VERBS

REGULAR VERBS
Unlike the irregular verbs, the regular verbs finish in –ed in their past forms. More than
95% of the verbs in English are regular verbs. Examples:

present form or past form past participle meaning

base form form
Ask (pregunto) Asked (pregunté) Asked Preguntar/pedir
(preguntado)
Listen (escucho) Listened Listened escuchar
(escuché) (escuchado)
Invite (invito) Invited (invité) Invited (invitado) invitar
Want (deseo) Wanted (deseé) Wanted (deseado) desear
Study (estudio) Studied (estudié) Studied estudiar
(estudiado)
Walk (camino) Walked (caminé) Walked caminar
(caminado)
Work (trabajo) Worked (trabajé) Worked trabajar
(trabajado)

NOTE: It is not practical to draw up a list of regular verbs, as there are so many of
them. It is more practical to get a complete list of irregular verbs, so that verbs that are
