High grain and soybean prices have driven global food inflation to the point of causing riots in
Africa, but no one is complaining on the banks of the Parana River in Argentina's central farm
belt. In the port city of Rosario, profits from grains exports have funded construction of some of
Argentina's tallest skyscrapers over the last year, helping to make Argentina's devastating

3 - EU: Three month drought hits yields of processed vegetables

Crops for the EU's vegetable processing industry will fall well below expectation due to
unfavourable conditions in the first five months of this year. An exceptionally long period of dry
and hot weather in the north of Europe is creating problems for growing crops. Particularly for
small seeded crops, such as carrots and onions, that experienced poor germination due to the dry
soil conditions, and for those crops that are currently reaching maturity, such as spinach, peas,
broad beans and cauliflower, that without moisture cannot achieve their potential yield.

Soaring vegetable prices amid China's worst droughts in half a century have
triggered worries that inflation will climb to a new high in May. Vegetable prices
rose 18.84 percent last week from the previous week, according to figures from the

9 - China imposes duty on guar exports
Guar gum exporters from India are at a distinct disadvantage. China has
imposed customs duty of 7% and 15% on guar exports from India, the world's
largest exporter. But import from Pakistan is duty free. This preferential
treatment is costing India in global market share.

The guar splits and guar powder attract a duty of 7% and 15% respectively.
China accounts for 25% to 30% of the total exports of guar gum splits. Due to
the higher duty on guar powder, India's exports to China is decreasing while
exports of refined guar gum splits is increasing.
