35th College Week

Saint Michael’s College of Laguna (SMCL) recently

held an open house to mark its 35th anniversary, aptly
themed “SMCL @35 Living the Legacy,” to give guests the
opportunity to meet the faculty, students, and staff of the
institution.

The Open House featured various activities such as SMCL

High School Alumni Homecoming, Michaelean Festival of
Talents, President’s Day, and the Pura Limaco Athletic Meet.

A CHED-deregulated (Commission on Higher Education)

and PACUCOA-accredited (Philippine Association of
Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation)
higher educational institution (HEI) , the SMCL open house
also served as an introductory event to those who are
interested to learn about the program offerings, academics,
and other activities that are available at the 1.3-hectare
campus.

One of the highlights was the Robotics Roadshow,

which was held through the cooperation of FELTA Multi-
Media, Inc. It featured the winners of the 7th World
Robot Olympiad and the various examples of what they
conceptualized and built with Lego Robotics kits to meet
the challenges presented in the competition. These
included small machines that competed in traditional
Filipino game-themed challenges, such as palosebo and
tumbang preso.

Apart from these, there were also robots that were created

with the promotion of Philippine tourism that included the

miniature-sized robotic Philippine jeepney and the robot
replica of President Noynoy Aquino.

The Robotics Roadshow was part of the school’s initiative

in taking bigger steps in meeting its goals to provide
specialized training courses in its curriculum to offer
alternative and more challenging means of learning to its
students.

Furthermore, the activity aided the students in their pursuit

of courses and careers that require creative thinking and
invention.

According to Dr. Lourdes Almeda-Sese, President of SMCL,

“At 35, the college continues to expand its reach to improve
people’s lives through excellent education, intensive
training, and comprehensive skills development.”

“SMCL has effectively positioned and excelled under

changing conditions as it strikes that delicate balance
between the community of scholars and the corporate
community,” she said.

Pasinaya 2011@SMCL
In support of the vision of a Filipino nation united,
empowered, and sustained by its cultural life and heritage,
Saint Michael’s College of Laguna celebrated the National
Arts Month thru Pasinaya 2011@smcl, a multi-arts festival
featuring dance, acoustics singing, story-telling, theater
and film showing. These week-long festivities emphasized
the importance of carrying on knowledge, values, and skills
through education and the arts.

According to SMCL president Dr. Lourdes Almeda Sese,

the National Arts Month is an opportune time to embed
in the students a sense of appreciation for the country’s
artistic culture. “Thus, we also invited students and teachers
from 15 neighboring schools to watch our presentations to
further promote our goals for the country’s art scene,” she
said.

As the event highlight, SMCL featured the cultural dance

presentation of the Philippine Barangay Folk Dance Troupe,
which is one of the country’s premiere dance companies
dedicated in performing the native arts in their authentic
form and also an awardee of the prestigious Philippine
Presidential Medal of Merit Award, or the “Patnubay ng
Kagalingan sa Sayaw.”

“We have always taught our students to appreciate our

craft because it is in this manner that they will understand
how crucial it is to pass on the knowledge and culture to
the next generation,” Dr. Sese added.

Meanwhile, coinciding with its Pasinaya festival, the school

also held a Corporate Social Responsibility Day through
the launch two campaigns. First was “No to Mining In
Palawan”, which is in support of the 10-million signature
campaign that aims to stop mining activities in Palawan,
the Philippines last ecological frontier. Second was the
“Wear your Cause” campaign, that aims to empower every
member of the Michaelean family to “shout out” their
cause by wearing pins as an advocate of women’s rights,
children’s rights, breast cancer support, love of country,
environmental awareness, responsible journalism among
others. The lead student organizations were the Golden Z
Club of SMCL, seven-time winner of the ZI Emma L. Conlon
Service Award and the Z Club of Laguna. Notably, Dr. Sese
is a member of the Zonta International Z and Golden Z Club
Committee.

Furthermore, SMCL Pasinaya promoted School of Business

Administration’s community outreach program, “Unlad
sa Barangay geared towards the improvement of the
economic conditions prevailing in the 24 barangays
of the City of Binan by providing them with livelihood
opportunities in collaboration with government and non-
government organizations.

Students sign for the “No to Mining in Palawan” on Feb. 23

to address one of the millennium development goals which
is environmental sustainability.

As part of the Pasinaya festival, the school supported the

10-million signature campaign that aims to stop mining
activities in Palawan to save the country’s last ecological
frontier.

SMCL led by its president Dr. Lourdes Almeda-Sese,

faculty, students and parents queued in front of Saint
Theodore Hall to sign the petition by affixing their
signature of support. Palawan mining may not only bring
out negative effects on the environment but also social
and economic effects. Members of the Michaelean family
were also encouraged to visit the website, signatures@
no2mininginplawan.com.

Pins with various causes anchored on the Millenium

Development Goals were on sale during the event. The
activity was dubbed as “Wear Your Cause” campaign.

Z and Golden Z Clubbers initiated the sale of the pins. The

most populars ones were the Go Green and I Stand for
Women designs.

Graduation

SMCL ushered the graduating class of 2011 in the 35th

Commencement Exercises (College Division), 32nd
Commencement Exercises (High School), 27th Graduation
Exercises (Grade School), and 30th Graduation Exercises
(Pre-school).

Ms. Jean Katherine V. Sales spoke to the graduates of SMCL

Grade School on April 2. She shared her memories of SMCL
and inspired the graduates to fulfill their dreams and enjoy
the next stage of their life - high school.

Ms. Sales is an alumna of SMCL. She was First Honors in

2002, Class Salutatorian in 2006, and Cum Laude in 2010
of the University of the Philippines Diliman - College of
Education. She was also awarded as Best Student Teacher in
UP.

Ms. Ma. Blanca Kim Bernardo-Lokin, on the other hand,

gave her inspirational speech during the high school
commencement exercises on April 3. She talked about
her own struggles as she climbed the ladder to success.
Ms. Lokin is the former president of Zonta Club of Pasig
and Former Partylist Representative for the Citizens’ Battle
Against Corruption (CIBAC) in the 12th Congress.

Meanwhile, Saint Michael’s College of Laguna ushered 254

graduates from the College Division, April 2.

Graduating class from the School of Business

Administration, School of Education and Liberal Arts, School
of Nursing, Institute of Computer Studies, and Institute of
Hospitality Management and Allied Courses gathered at St.
Theodore Hall Sunday to receive their diplomas from the
College President Dr. Lourdes Almeda-Sese.

Fr. Xavier ‘Javy’ Alpasa, SJ, Jesuit social entrepreneur,

founder of Rags2Riches, and president of Loyola College
of Culion and Isla Culion Hotel Maya delivered the
commencement speech. Fr. Alpasa encouraged the
Michaeleans to appreciate the commitment of the parents
and benefactors to send the students to college. He also
imparted his own experiences while he was a student who
was given opportunities because of the hardwork of his
parents.

He summed up by saying that success comes from SIKAP,

which means Sidhi (Passion), Karunungan (Wisdom), and
Pananampalataya (Faith).

27
OFW Heroes’ Welcome

Under the program Expat San Miguel of SMCL, our

Michaelean Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) parents were
given a special tribute thru the OFW Heroes’ Welcome on
April 6.

Dr. Lourdes Almeda-Sese led the tribute by honoring the

OFW parents. She imparted the experiences of the children
of the OFW parents who are enrolled in SMCL. Highlighted
were the stories of Adrian Josele Quional and Ms. Crissa
Ibarra, both of whom have achieved their goals even
though they came from families “broken” by diaspora.

The Career and Counseling Services Center prepared the

program and the icebreaking games that followed. The
families were then invited to lunch by the College President.
