SUBJECT: Electrical Technology
SECOND SEMESTER – OCT 1 TO MARCH 31

Transformer :-
Refision of working principal & construction of transformers, single
phase and three phase transformers, their components, typesof transformers & E.M.e. equation simple
numerical problems on losses & efficiency, cooling of transformers, testing connections of 3 phase
transformers.Instrument transformers, connection of sub station transformers. Instrument transformers,
connection of sub station transformers to bus Bar basic principal of parallel operation of
transformers.Procedure of changing transformer oil . Tasting and filteration of transformer oil visual
insepection of genral faults in transformers and report writing.

Sub-Station:-
Study of constructional features of bus bars, panel boards, switches
&CKT breakers.

Earthing :
Types of earthing, selection of earth electrodes, I.E. rules regarding earthing, importance of
earthing, earth resistance chart. Earthing of power station and sub- station equipment. Methods of
earthing . Measurment of earth resistance. Earthing of trasmission and distribution lines and consumer
installations. Lighting arrestors their use and connection.

Transmission and Distribution:-

Grading of working v voltage(low,


medium,high,extra, high voltage) Different systems of power genration( conventional and non
conventional) Transmission of power from power house to consumer permises (primary and secondary
transmission and distribution. Line losses and line leakage, capacitance b/w two parallel lines,
capacitance ofcable, effect of capacitance in lines and cables.
Discharging lines & cables for capacitance effect. Power factor
impovement voltage regulation L.V./H.V. lines and their constructional features. TYpes of sub stations,
pole mounted andout door sub stations and their lay out (upto 33K.V. partrolling of H.T./L.T.lines,
Classification of faqults and rectification.

Testing Transformer for continuly & insulation resistance.
1. Connectinga transfotmer with bus bar.
2. Connecting a three phase energy motor with & without C.T. & Measuring the Energy.
3. Measuring thee current in a cable with the help of tongtester.
4. Inspecting a transformer to check leakage of oil, oil level & condition of breather, Expolsion
vent, bushings etc.
5. Tracing inter nal CKT of a battery charger.
6. Preparing electrolyte to specifications.
7. Testing & Connecting Halaogen lamp.
8. Inspecting the nearby sub station & preparing & inspection report.
9. Lifting, transporting, mounting & connecting distribution transformer with H.V.& L.V. side.
10. Earthing Transformer & sub station equipment.
11. Testing lightning arrosters, mounting, connecting and earthing.
Visiting nearby power station & observing variouse equipment panel H.T., L.T. lines,
switch gears, instrument transformers and control equipment.

SUBJECT: Basic Materials & Line maintenance
SECOND SEMESTER – OCT 1 TO MARCH 31
Unground cables:
Different types of underground cable
their constructional features. PILCDSTA(proper insulator head cover) P.V.C. and XLPE cables. Impact
and effect of mousture on insulation. Precautions necessary to prevent ingreas of moisture. Sealing of
cables ends. Different types of cable jointing. Straight through ,tee joints and terminal joints. Different
types of cableboxes, cable compounds, different types of trminals lugs and ferrules. Soldering and
plumbing materials.

Transporation and handling of line materials:-


Different methods of
lifting and transporation of pole and line material. Proper stacking of materials. Pack and unpacking of
materials. Precaution to be taken during loading, trasporation and un-loading.

Repair and Maintaenance of lines:


Patrolling/locating faults, estimation
of materials to attend fault or breakdown. Precautions before starting qand closing of work. Standard
procedures for taking returning of shutdown for working on line & cables; metods of temporary
earthing of lines after discharging. Submission of reports regarding their and breakdown. Routine and
protectivity maintenance of lines.

Routine and preventive maintenance of sub-station OHL(S):

Knowledge of layout of substation, equipment their operation periodicity of routine maintanenance and
attending defects. Maintenance of battery charging equipment,O.C.B. and A.B. switches. Replacement
of H.T. fuses. Operation and maintenance of fire fighting equipment. Up-Keep of substation premises.
Reports writing.

a. Fixing armour rod and dampers in overhead lines/ transmission lines.
b. Stringing, tensioning and binding of conductors on Insulators for proper sag and tension.
c. Patrolling a transmission line to identify faulty insulators and other defects.
d. Studying different types of cables to check their specification.
e. Measuring insulation resistance of cables and testing of cables.
f. Sealing the end of different types and size of cables.
g. Studying different type of and joint boxes to check clearness with respect to six of
cables.
h. Crimping excise on heavy cross section L.T. cables.
i. Joining heavy cross section L.T.cables.
j. Preparing cable ends through Trifuxcating boxes.
k. Assembling a dert and studying its operation.
l. Lifting and Loading cable drums by the use of chain pulley block with deric and practice
of fitting slinge.
m. Erecting pole using chain pulley block mounted on a derric.
n. Preparing a prevently maintence schedule for II KV line.
o. Associating with lineman of state electricity board with the permission of state electricity
board authorities to maintain II KV lines.
p. Maintaining equipment like O.C.B. and Acb. Switches.
Maintaining battery charging room.

SECOND SEMESTER – OCT 1 TO MARCH 31
Definitions and calculation of H.T. lines :-
Theory of Sag, vibration, relationship with wind, show and
line leakages. Transpositionsof lines, Tension calculations, Reading of sag chart . clearances
andgroundclearances. Limits of voltage regulation in H.T. lines, causes of voltage drop and line losses,
corona and corona’s effect.

Testing of H.T. Over head lines:


Patrolling and inspection of lines forany
defects before of testing. Continuity test, insulation resistance test, Earth resistance test, No-load
voltage test. Phase sequence test.

Standard construction practices:


Standard drawings and contruction
practices, estimation of materials required for the following work:-

a) 11KV, THree phase, overheadline, combined 11KV and L.T.O.H.Lines.


b) 33KV Three phase O.H.line.
c) 11KV ‘V’ cross arm.
d) 33KV ‘V’ cross arm.
e) 11/0.415 KV distribution sub station.
f) 33/11 KV power sub station.Earthing of overhead line.Non-current carrying metal parts.
g) Earthing of overhead line.Non-current carrying metal parts.
h) Earthing of distributing and power sub station structures and transformers neutral
i) 66/132 KV 3phase tower line ( single CKT, Double CKT)
NOTE;-
Students shall have to make dimensions to the scale drawing for all the above method of
construction.

a. Installation of Drop – out Fuses:


i. Installation and operation on drop out fuses to be fixed on 11K.V. lines.

b. Fault Location:
i. Visit of 11 KV lines for the study of sectionlization arrangments.

c. Working of L.T. Hot Lines:


i. Replacement of aerial fuses damages services wires and defective meters.
