Founders Day will be May 4th
This one could be our
biggest and best!
ur long tradition of celebrating the
O founding of our Fraternity continues
as we mark another year with a great
event next month. Once again we have
Frater Dan Costello to thank for making
arrangements at Hs. Lordships Restaurant
on the Berkeley Marina. Fraters and their
guests will gather in the lounge for
socializing and cocktails. Dinner will be
serJed at 7:30, and you will find this meal to
be far better than customary banquet fare.
Cost of the dinner is $47.00 each
($94 a couple) which includes tax, tip and
wine on each table. Cocktails are extra, and
are easily ordered and enjoyed in the lounge
adjacent to our usual banquet room. A
check to Dan Costello, and payable to him,
will insure your place. A form for this
purpose is on the inside back page of this
issue. It is essential to make your reserva­
tion by May 1.
This is probably the most tantalizing
choice of entree we've ever faced. We'll
choose between prime rib and grilled
swordfish. Be sure to indicate your choices
on the reservation form.
Fraters who enjoyed the dinner dance
last year at the Olympic County Club may be
disappointed to learn that we are not
returning there this year; however, it wasn't
possible to secure an appropriate date there
for this year's event. On the other hand,
we'll enjoy cocktails in one of the Bay Area's
most beautiful lounges as we gather at any
time, late afternoon or early evening, to gaze

through picture windows across the water
toward the Berkeley campus where all of us
enjoyed great times during our lost and
decadent youth. This will be our fourth year
at Hs. Lordships where we have always
been treated well.
Each year we see some new faces at
Teke events, and we hope each Frater will
do a little telephoning or e-mailing in an
effort to round up a few more new attendees
and their dates.
Although we long ago abandoned the
concept of a dinner speaker at Founders
Day celebrations, we'll hear briefly from Tom
Morgan and Will Deady on the subject of
progress at 2725 Channing Way.

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON
WAS A FABULOUS AFFAIR
Fraters all enjoyed a gala evening in
December at the Olympic Club in downtown
San Francisco. The food was fantastic,
attendance was up, the surroundings were
elegant as usual, and the camaraderie
unsurpassed. Again, we appreciate Dan
Costello's impeccable arrangements.
Christmas carols were rendered by all
. and sundry, and the Teke Quartet was in
fine voice (although Fraters correctly
observed that the group does not know
"Coney Island Baby.")

"old-time Frater," but says the "old"

with my mother in Fresno and
worked at various jobs. I married
Ruby Hickman from Sanger 10

spent much of the war as an aircraft
mechanic at United Airlines at San
Francisco Airport. Then I moved
back to Fresno to care for my
mother, a stroke viotim. I worked
there for a time on airplanes and
then drifted into refrigeration and air
conditioning.
"1 developed my own repair
business and retired in 1972,
leaving the business to my partner.

That was the first of three
retirements until my wife became
terminally ill with cancer in 19S7
and died in 1990. I lived alone for
seven years until my declining
health forced me to move to Lodi to
live with my daughter, Susan and
family. She is a teacher in the Lodi
Unified School District.
As for myself, I spend my time
with a Macintosh computer. As a
stained glass hobbyist, I work in the
shop when the weather is agree­
able. The Episcopal Church is
building a new cathedral, and I am
therefore on the stained glass
committee. I am an avid reader
and love to work the daily
crossword puzzle. I am not well.

Editorial Ramblings
THOUGHTS ON THE CAMPANILE
One day, in the Spring of 1956 and much to
the surprise of ail and sundry, the campanile
played, "Let's sing a toast to TKE.," I don't
remember who set this up, but it's on the
Teke Record, the disk we cut that year. It's a
collectors item today,
We speak of the campanile as
though it were a structure, but to see the
campanile from any distance, one would have
to look really hard; for the structure itself is
Sather Tower. The "campanile" refers to the
bells therein. It is the campanile we hear. It
is Sather Tower that we see.
Few Fraters know that Sather Tower
was a gift to the United States from The King
of Spain in 1856.

Under the direction of House Manager Bill Schmohyul '66
and Past Prytanis Jim Clardy '65, many improvements were made
last summer to the Nu Chapter House. Fraters staying at the house
for the summer were paid $2.00 an hour for their work. Improve­
ments included the planting of a new lawn. Several trees were
planted and, under the direction of Nick Bake '67, who had studied
with a landscape architect, shrubs and brick edging were added. A
new ranch-style barbecues and fencing were built in the back yard.

Frater Dan Costello is the man we have
to thank, over and over again, for his
meticulous arrangements for our alumni
social events. Then, once these
arrangements are completed, he sweats
bullets waiting for the reservations to
come in. Thanks Dan, many times over.
Nu Chapter and Tony Wayne '72 were honored by being
selected by the International Fraternity Committee for Most
Improved Chapter, and Runner-Up for Teke of the Year. The House
has an enormous pledge class, interesting socia! activities, and
added improvements that caused the Committee to award us this
honor. Tony was honored for his achievements in leading the
House grade point average and for a scholarship to Stanford.
