Receiving Help from God

Psalm 46:1

One of the early insights a wise person gets in life is that ‘without God, we can do
nothing’.

Sadly, many people do not realise this in a world pervaded by Do-it-yourself schemes.
Many people somehow believe they can do things on their own, so they neglect the all-
important help of God. That is why some people need a lot of persuasion to build a
relationship with Jesus, to come to Church and even to pray.

In John 15:5, Jesus declared with finality, ‘without me, you can do nothing’. Psalm
127:1-2 written by wise King Solomon puts it best. Psa 127:1-2 Without the help of the
LORD it is useless to build a home or to guard a city. (2) It is useless to get up early and stay up
late in order to earn a living. God takes care of his own, even while they sleep.(CEV).

Without God’s help, we can do nothing. Sometimes, man can help us. Bosses can
promote us. Family and friends can help us out but the only sure help is from God. The
Bible has some unsavoury things to say about reliance on man’s help. Psalm 60:11 and
Psalm 108:12 both declare boldly, ‘Vain/Useless is the help of man’. The most shocking Bible
commentary about man’s help is in Jeremiah 17:5-8. It says: I, the LORD, have put a curse
on those who turn from me and trust in human strength. (6) They will dry up like a bush in salty
desert soil, where nothing can grow. (7) But I will bless those who trust me. (8) They will be like
trees growing beside a stream-- trees with roots that reach down to the water, and with leaves
that are always green. They bear fruit every year and are never worried by a lack of rain.(CEV)

I pray that you will always find help with God in Jesus’ name.

When God helps you, amazing things happen. For one, with God’s help, the impossible
becomes possible. In Luke 1:5-17, two very righteous people, Zacharias and Elizabeth tried to
have a child but failed until God stepped into their affairs. As soon as God decided to help them, the
great child-John the Baptist was born. May the Lord step into your affairs this month in Jesus’
name.

When God begins to help you actively, your little efforts begin to yield great results.
David with God’s help defeated the giant Goliath with just one smooth stone.(1 Samuel
17:50). Peter had struggled all night and indeed all his life but made little progress. He
had great relationships with other fishermen but because vain is the help of man, he
didn’t make much progress. His friends couldn’t help themselves talk less of helping
him. Yet in Luke 5:1-7, Jesus stepped into Peter’s boat and began to direct his affairs.
With only one attempt but with Jesus helping him, Peter caught two ship-loads of fish.
If you let the same Jesus help you, your little efforts will yield mighty results pretty
quickly.

When God helps you, He helps you forever. In 2 Samuel 7:8-15, David’s son-Solomon
was guaranteed access to heaven’s favour because his father had received God’s help.
In Genesis 26:1-5, Abraham’s son-Isaac received God’s help even in troubled times
because his father was a friend of God. Today, as you connect to God’s help,
generations in your lineage will enjoy heaven’s assistance in Jesus’ name.

The big question therefore is, How do I receive help from God? So that I can have an
eternal guarantee that nothing will be impossible in my life and my little efforts will
yield great outputs!

1. Qualify for God’s Help

God does not help everybody. In David’s family, God bypassed his seven 7 more
qualified elder brothers and chose the shepherd boy who had been kept out of sight. In
Luke 5:1-3, Jesus saw two empty boats belonging to two people who needed help, but
He chose Peter’s boat. What was His reason? His sovereignty. He decides to help whom
He pleases. Psalm 115:3 tells us that our God is in the heavens and He does as He
pleases.

So how does God decide who qualifies for His help?

He checks the heart. Jeremiah 17:9-10 tells us that man’s heart is desperately wicked,
yet God sees all hearts and decides who qualifies for His help. Jer 17:9-10 The heart is
deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (10) I the LORD search the
heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of
his doings.

That is why it is so crucial that we give God our naturally selfish/wicked hearts and
receive new hearts from him. That way, when He checks your heart and mine, He will
find hearts that are after His will. Psa 34:18 The LORD is near to them that are of a broken
heart; and saves such as be of a contrite spirit.

God desperately wants to help you this very hour but He requires a relationship first.
He requires you to commit your heart to Him first.

2. To receive God’s help, YOU NEED TO HELP GOD!

Yes, God is the Almighty but there are things He has decided that man must help Him
to do on earth. Psa 115:16 says The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth hath
he given to the children of men.

Your earthly father can cook his own meals, yet he chooses to ask you or anyone in the
household to do it for him.

So how can you help God on earth so He can send help to you from above?

a. Let your light shine.....

Mat 5:13-16 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be
salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
(14) Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. (15) Neither do men
light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in
the house. (16) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify
your Father which is in heaven.

If you are a child of God who has decided to give your heart to Jesus totally, you must
then begin to represent Him in all you do. That way your life helps God to
communicate His goodness to the world. In return, God will never forget your labour of
love, as your life begins to radiate Christ.

b. Witness with your mouth....

Rom 10:10-15 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation. (11) For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall
not be ashamed. (12) For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord
over all is rich unto all that call upon him. (13) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the
Lord shall be saved. (14) How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and
how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a
preacher? (15) And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are
the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

When you extend an invitation to people to experience Jesus as you have; God will
help you and beautify your testimony. Because David spoke up to defend God against
Goliath, God sent help to defeat Goliath.

3. To receive help from God, you must ask God for help non-stop

James 4:1-3 tells us that many of our problems come because we do not ask God. And
when we do, we ask wrongly.

In Mark 10:46-52, a man who born blind shouted for help above the noise of the crowd
until Jesus heard him. When Jesus heard him, the man Bartimaeus ensured he asked
for his healing rather than ask for alms.

Today, ask God for help and He will answer. Sometimes, His response comes instantly.
At other times, He chooses to stretch our faith to test our commitment to Him and
build the much-needed virtue of patience.

Psalm 91:14-15 assures us that when those committed to Christ call upon Him, He will answer.

Commit to yourself to Jesus today. Commit your lifestyle to build God’s Kingdom on
earth and call upon God. Help is on your way! Shalom.
