1 Introduction

1.1 About Ergotron StyleLink

Ergotron StyleLink is a Windows application that allows a personal computer using an Ergotron
StyleView cart to communicate with the Ergotron StyleView Power System (SPS). The StyleLink
application monitors power system performance and displays this information on the PC screen.

StyleLink allows users to monitor battery level and other measures of system performance, to ensure
that the power system remains charged and functioning normally. StyleLink provides current information
on battery level via an icon in the system tray, as well as a more detailed performance display on the
desktop.

In addition to providing the user with battery level and performance information on their PC, the StyleLink
application supports remote monitoring across a network using Microsoft Management Console 3.0.

1.3 Installation
Important! StyleLink installation requires that the installer have Administrative privileges on the PC
where the application is being installed. This requirement is due to the fact that StyleLink will install a
Windows Service application that continually gathers power system data regardless if anyone is logged
into the PC.

Important! If you are planning to use any Enterprise features, such as Fleet Install, Remote
Configuration, Remote Monitoring, please review Chapter 7: Enterprise Administration before
beginning your install. Enterprise features use your existing Microsoft tools, Active Directory, Group
Policy Management, SNMP, SQL Server, and MMC 3.0 and thus require system administrator level
knowledge to implement.

The StyleLink installation package contains a standard Ergotron Stylelink Client.msi program that
launches a Setup Wizard.

Double clicking the icon will automatically start the installation program.

Once started, a Setup Wizard will appear that will walk users through the installation.

Note: The user can expect the following behavior from the Setup Wizard:

If StyleLink has never been installed, installation will proceed normally as described above.

If the same version of StyleLink is already installed, the Setup Wizard will prompt for repair or
removal.

If an older version of StyleLink is already installed, the Setup Wizard will replace the older version
without prompt. Any history files will be retained.

Click the Next button to begin installation.

A screen will prompt you to decide between a complete or custom installation. If you don't not have
specific memory requirements, like installation on thin client hardware, you will want to do a complete
install.

1.3.1 Regional Settings

While StyleLink is currently offered with an English language interface only, it is designed to present
data using regional formats and units. Most notable is temperature data which is appropriately
presented in Fahrenheit or Celsius depending on the configuration of the user's Windows operating
system. Common configuration errors result in Celsius temperatures being reported as Fahrenheit
values, and vice versa.

There are some subtleties to this configuration that are worth noting to ensure that data is presented
correctly. StyleLink consists of two pieces of software, the System Tray application that the user
interfaces with, and a Windows service that is responsible for continually storing history data, sending
alerts etc. regardless of whether any users are logged into the machine. The first of these applications
runs under the Windows Regional and Language settings for the currently logged in user and the
second, the service, runs under the Regional and Language settings as set for the entire Windows
machine. If settings for both are not similar, unexpected results can occur.

To properly configure these settings, select Control Panel from the Windows Start Menu and choose
Regional and Language Options:

© 2005-2010 Ergotron
18 StyleLink Client

In the Standards and Formats section, choose the Language (Region) combination that is the best fit.
Optionally you may select a Location as well.

© 2005-2010 Ergotron
Introduction 19

Making the above changes will control how data is displayed when using the currently logged on
account. To complete the change so that the StyleLink service will report data properly, go to the the
Advanced tab in this same screen:

© 2005-2010 Ergotron
20 StyleLink Client

Click the checkbox under Default user account settings:

Note that when this checkbox is clicked you will see a warning dialog:

Click OK on this warning and then click the OK button on the Regional and Language Options dialog.
As the warning above implied, you must reboot your machine to make these changes take effect.
Once the machine is rebooted, all data will be presented in properly localized formats.

2.3 Using the Detailed View

The Detailed View shows the status of the power system.

© 2005-2010 Ergotron
Using StyleLink 25

The top section of the display shows the time remaining in hours and minutes before the battery loses
charge. Also shown are percent battery charge remaining and percent load on the system.

Charge Remaining shows a percentage value and visual representation of the amount of battery charge
remaining to power the system. The unit will operate normally with a charge remaining between 50-
100%. The unit will emit warning beeps if the charge remaining drops below 50%. The warning beeps
can be muted by pressing the alarm mute pushbutton located on the (RUI) Remote User Interface (see
your cart manual for more details). The unit will emit warning beeps again if the charge remaining drops
below 30%. The unit will shut down if the charge remaining falls below 0%. It is recommended that the
user plug in to charge the battery as often as possible.

Load shows a percentage value and visual representation of the draw on the power supply. Percent
load will vary, depending on the number of items plugged into the power supply. If nothing is
plugged in, load will be zero and the Detailed View will display a "No Load" message. If percent

26 StyleLink Client

load gets above 100%, the power supply will show a flashing red light, emit a series of warning
beeps, and shut down after a short time delay.

The middle section of the display shows battery voltage, input voltage, charge current, system
temperature and battery cycles.

Acceptable ranges for these values are shown below:

Battery Voltage 10.5 - 14.7 or 21 - 29.4 Volts DC

Input Voltage 101 - 133 Volts AC
Charge Current 0 - 11.5 DC Amps
System Temperature 0 - 52 C or 32 - 125 F
Battery Cycles n/a

If readings are outside the normal range for any of these values, unplug the power system, turn off the
StyleView Power System, and contact Ergotron Technical Support.

The bottom section of the display shows any messages related to system status.

Power Source shows the power supply that is being utilized by the system:

Line indicates power is being drawn from a wall socket.

Battery indicates power is being drawn from the battery.
Not Connected indicates that the unit is not connected to the computer.

System Status shows any problems with the power supply:

Normal indicates that the system is working properly..

Not Connected indicates that the unit is not connected, so no system status information is

Using StyleLink 27

available.
Any other fault shown will have a definition in the Troubleshooting Section, clinking on the
fault will bring up the section regarding the individual fault and what to do in response to
receiving the fault.

Battery indicates whether the battery should be replaced:

Good indicates that the battery is in good health.

Replace indicates that battery is approaching the end of its lifetime and should be replaced.
Unk nown indicates that battery replacement status can not yet be determined. StyleLink
requires a minimum of one discharge cycle starting at 100% charge remaining to acquire
sufficient information to provide replacement status. When the battery enters a charging state
after a period of discharge, replacement status will be calculated.

StyleLink records the number of times battery replacement has been indicated. Optionally, email
notifications can be configured to inform users if replacement is warranted. Please see Changing
Settings and Changing Notification E-mail Contacts for more information.

2.4 Using the Dockable View

The Dockable View shows the status of the power system. The user may adjust the view to use either
icons or text acronyms to indicate performance measures.

or

Each icon or text acronym on the view represents a StyleLink performance measure. Specific
descriptions of each measure can be found in the section Using the Detailed View.

Note: The color of the text for the Charge Remaining and Percent Load in the Dockable View will
match those provided in the Detailed View. The color change between green, yellow, and red can be
used as visual cues to system issues in a fashion similar to the bar displays on the Detailed View.

Icons are presented in the Detailed View to represent each measure. These icons are also used on the
Dockable View. Moving the cursor over a measurement icon or text acronym will display a Tool Tip
describing the item. A key to the icons and text acronyms is also provided below. Some measures use
alternate icons depending on the current status of the system. A key to non-numeric values is included.

2.8 Handling Automated Shutdowns

StyleLink can be configured to automatically shutdown the computer when charge remaining reaches an
indicated threshold. For information on activating the automated shutdown feature, see Changing
Settings. StyleLink must be running in the system tray for the automated shutdown to be active.

The automated shutdown threshold is monitored when the Power Source is indicated as Battery. If
charge remaining hits the indicated threshold, a warning window will appear. A timer will be present
indicating the length of time until StyleLink begins shutting down the computer. The timer begins at 30
seconds.

Warning w indow - count dow n proceeding

The warning window will ask the user whether the shutdown should be aborted. The user may choose to
abort, or allow StyleLink to continue with its automated shutdown procedure.

To abort the shutdown, select the button labeled Yes, stop shutdown, or click the red X in
the upper right hand corner. Both actions have the same effect. It is recommended that the
user then immediately save any work, and connect the unit to a wall socket for battery

charging.

To continue the shutdown immediately, select the button labeled No, shutdown now.
StyleLink will discontinue the count-down and move directly to shutdown if this action is
selected.

If the timer is allowed to expire, StyleLink will also commence with the shutdown action.

Note: If the timer expires or the user does not elect to abort the automated shutdown, StyleLink will
close any open applications, without saving any work, as it progresses to computer shutdown.

Aborting a shutdown will disable the automated shutdown until the battery has been switched over to
Line power for charging. At this point the automated shutdown function is once again enabled and
StyleLink will be monitoring for low charge remaining if the Power Source returns to Battery.

5 Troubleshooting
5.1 System Status
5.1.1 Overload

Overload Fault

What does this mean?

© 2005-2010 Ergotron
Troubleshooting 55

If the Stylelink system status reads Overload Fault, the cart’s power system is unable to
provide power to the devices plugged into the cart.

Why do I care?

In this situation, the amount of current being used by the devices plugged into the cart
exceed the capability of the power system and your devices won’t power up.
What should I do?

Check the current rating of the devices plugged into the cart (the current ratings are
listed on your device’s nameplate) – it will say something like 1.2 amps or whatever the
actual current is for your device. If the total current of all devices plugged into the cart
exceeds 2.1 amps, you can lower the load by removing a device so that the total current
is less than 2.1 amps.
Alternatively, some devices use power supplies that are not power factor corrected.
Those devices can actually use up to twice as much current as is actually required.
There are a number of commercially available power supplies that incorporate power
factor correction – contact the manufacturer of your device for help, or check on-line for
after-market power factor correction power supplies that will replace your non-power
factor corrected power supply for your device.
If the problem persists, contact Ergotron Technical Support

5.1.2 Inverter Fault

Inverter Fault

What does this mean?

If the Stylelink system status reads Inverter Fault, the cart’s power system is unable to
provide power to the devices plugged into the cart.
Why do I care?

In this situation, a failure of the inverter causes devices plugged into the cart to power
off; they can’t be used.
What should I do?

You can try to recycle the power by turning the cart on and off with the UI.
If the problem persists, contact Ergotron Technical Support.

Phone: 800-888-8458

5.1.3 Over Temperature Fault

Over Temperature Fault

What does this mean?

If the Stylelink system status reads Over Temperature Fault, the power system has
shut itself off due to a higher than normal temperature.
Why do I care?

If the power system detects temperatures which may cause a reliability or unsafe
condition, it will shut itself off. This means that devices plugged into the cart will also not
be usable since power is removed from them as well.
What should I do?

Ensure that the room where the cart is does not exceed the operating temperature (29-
degrees C/ 85-degrees F). Move the cart to a cooler location. You may need to let the
cart cool down before recycling power with the UI. If the room is below maximum
operating temperature, check the fan on the power module for dust and debris that
could be blocking the power module airflow; vacuum the base of the cart and the fan if
necessary.
If the problem persists, contact Ergotron Technical Support.

Phone: 800-888-8458

5.1.4 Battery Status Fault

Battery Status Fault

What does this mean?

If the Stylelink system status reads Battery Status Fault, the cart’s battery has become
completely depleted. This means that the battery voltage has dropped to less than 21
volts (instead of the normal 24 volts). It could also be that this is due to a shorted cell or
cells within the battery or the battery has been removed from the cart or is disconnected.
Why do I care?

When the battery voltage drops below 21.0 volts the power system in the cart will not

© 2005-2010 Ergotron
Troubleshooting 57

operate. Consistently depleting the batteries in this way will quickly deteriorate their
usable lifetime.

What should I do?

Try recharging the batteries by plugging the cart into a wall outlet. If recharging does not
solve the problem, then check the batteries to ensure they are present and the
connections are good. If the batteries are present and the connections are OK, then
your batteries have failed and need to be replaced. You need to replace both batteries
at the same time with like brand, voltage, and capacity.
If the problem persists, contact Ergotron Technical Support.
Email: customerservice@ergotron.com

Phone: 800-888-8458

5.1.5 Charger Fault

Charger Fault

What does this mean?

If the Stylelink system status reads Charger Fault, the power system is unable to
recharge the cart’s batteries.
Why do I care?

If the batteries are not able to be recharged, you will not be able to use your cart unless
it is plugged into the wall.
What should I do?

Contact Ergotron Technical Support.

Phone: 800-888-8458

5.1.6 BBC_Not_Connected_Fault

Battery Balance Circuit Not Connected (BBC Not Connected)

What does this mean?

If Stylelink system status reads BBC Not Connected an integral portion of the charging
circuitry within the power system has become disconnected somehow. The battery
balance circuit is responsible for maintaining and regulating the batteries to keep them
charging safely and efficiently.

© 2005-2010 Ergotron
58 StyleLink Client

Why do I care?
If this fault condition is ignored, the life of the batteries will rapidly decline and they may
become unsafe.
What should I do?
Call Ergotron Technical Support.
Email: customerservice@ergotron.com

Phone: 800-888-8458

5.1.7 BBC_Fault

Battery Balance Circuit Fault (BBC Fault)

What does this mean?

If Stylelink system status reads BBC Fault, this means that the Battery Balance Circuit
has entered a fault state in which the BBC Circuit and the Charger will shut off to
maintain safety. The faults can occur due to BBC high temperature or an over voltage
condition. It may also occur if only one battery was recently replaced.
Why do I care?
This fault condition will cause the charger to shut itself off. If the problem is persistent
such that the power system will not fully charge (or over charge) the batteries, this will
quickly deteriorate the life of the batteries.
What should I do?
Check to ensure the room temperature is normal (84-degrees F/ 29-degrees C or
lower). Ensure that both batteries were replaced at the same time – never replace only
one. Check for obstructions blocking the air vents at the rear of the cart.
If the problem persists, contact Ergotron technical support:
