Casey Anthony, Chloroform and Dark Psychology

Karate chops and chloroform are two methods of sedation

popularized by movies, media and the Casey Anthony murder
trial. They both seem to offer a quick, cheap and effective
anesthesia requiring little skill to administer. Unfortunately, both,
in reality, are extremely unreliable techniques and require great
skill to administer if the desired outcome is unconsciousness, not
death.

If we assume that Casey Anthony or one of her henchmen

administered chloroform, and there is some evidence of
chloroform involvement but none of karate chopping, to Caylee
Anthony, we can also assume that the desired outcome was
either sedation or death.

The use of chloroform, in any case, required Casey to acquire it.

A review of her online activity shows that she did indeed search
for ways to either purchase chloroform outright or manufacture it
herself.
A quick Google search will show that several vendors sell
chloroform. Many chemical supply houses require that the
purchaser be a legitimate company with reason to use the
substance, but the Grainger industrial Supply Company, with an
outlet in Orlando, Florida, also sells chloroform.

Had Casey so chosen, she might have just driven to Grainger’s,

and assuming that they had it in stock, bought some there. In
any event, she could have ordered it online. A half liter of
chloroform would have set her back just over thirty dollars.

Now if she had visited the local Grainger’s, surely someone there
would have noticed her. Why? Because Grainger’s sells
industrial supplies. They probably sell very little chloroform. An
attractive twenty one year old female would surely be noticed.

Had she purchased it online, there would have, of necessity, been

a purchase and payment trail.

Has the prosecution followed up on this in their investigation?

Time will tell.

Had Casey chosen to whip up a batch of kitchen chloroform on

her own, she would have, using one method popular on the
internet, wound up with a batch of chemical “slop” including
chloroform, acetone, water, fragrances and various by-products.

Could this brew have been used to sedate or euthanize Caylee?

Probably. However, not quickly or reliably. It would also have
made her apartment, or wherever her makeshift lab was set up,
smell likes the bad end of a chemical plant.

What’s the story with chloroform anyway? It is a very useful

organic solvent widely used in organic laboratories, industrial
processes, pharmaceuticals and many other applications.

It has no application in the home, cannot be purchased at drug

stores, Lowe’s, Home Depot or the local hardware store, and the
vast majority of people never even encounter it or its sweet smell
in their lifetime.

It can be used as an intoxicating inhalant, but many other

solvents are more readily available for that purpose. Let us say
that Casey had decided to just sedate Caylee, not kill her. Casey
might have been trying to knock Caylee out briefly so she could
go out and party for a while without worrying that Caylee would
get into mischief.

A good mother would have done some research and discovered

that chloroform is carcinogenic and, even when administered
properly as it was in the old days when it was used as an
anesthetic, it can cause long-term respiratory and other health
problems. She might have asked her mother, a nurse, about the
fact that the difference between a sedative dose and a lethal one
is very small.

In any event, it seems like using chloroform would have been a

poor choice by Casey Anthony.
