Why red, white and blue? To the original members of the Continental Congress, red stood for hardiness and cour-
age, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance and justice.
Why thirteen stars and stripes? They represented the thirteen American colonies which rallied around the new flag
in their fight against the British for self-governance.
The thirteen colonies included Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jer-
sey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia.
To this day, thirteen stripes still commemorate the original colonies. Instead of thirteen stars, today the number of
stars on the US flag has grown to 50, representing every state in the Union.

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. God is
Here This is potentially one of the most audacious proclamations of faith we make as mem-
bers of the Christian Church, but I also believe its one of the most important. We hear about
God‖ Emmanuel,‖ God with us, during Christmas, we hear about a God that is for us both
on the Cross and out of the now Empty Tomb. My worry is that although we join in one
voice to say this, even though we hear in reading after reading from the bible that in fact God
is Here, when it comes down to it, do we really believe it? Its seems easy to point to the mid-
dle of a natural disaster, and point out how God is there – in the volunteers, in the clean-up,
in the hope for a new beginning. It seems easy to point to the upstart missionary church in
the middle of Asia or Africa, where some missionary is preaching to far away tribe the words
from the bible for the first time. We can bring ourselves to believe that God is There. It
seems that it has become easy to point to Mega Churches who have 500, 1000, maybe more in
worship every week. We point to their programs, staff, technology, and say God is There.
But what does it mean to say, and believe that God is HERE, in Barrett, MN and the sur-
rounding small towns and farms.
It means that God cares deeply about us. It means that God is living, working, and re-
deeming us. It means that God is actively giving us the gift of faith, and the many and varied
gifts throughout our community. It means having to believe that we are special, and that
God cares about us, here, now. If it isn’t obvious to you, I will come out and say it directly:
God IS HERE. Sure God is in the midst of far away disasters, sure God is with far away mis-
sions, sure God is with those actively pursuing their faith in far away Mega Churches, but
God is Here as well! Where ever God goes He gifts with talent and passion in order to do
God’s will in that place. Sure we are gifted differently than those other places, but its be-
cause we are different than those places, but we really have a lot of gifts in our community.
Gifts we need to lift up for God’s Ministry in this place.
There is a radio commercial right now for Prairie Ridge Clinics, that talks about people
in communities out here choosing to live here, and that the clinic also chooses to be here.
They are right, in some ways it would be easier to live in a community with department
stores, large grocery stores, multiple restaurants that are open late, and lots of options of dif-
ferent churches. But we choose to live Here, with each other. We choose to live Here, where
we can trust our neighbors. We choose to live here, where we track and tend the land. We
choose to live Here, where we gather in worship and share in each other’s lives.
Brothers and Sisters in Christ, let me say again, God also chooses to be Here,
among you, with you, for you. GOD IS HERE!
